I believe the only reason we haven’t seen the use of nuclear weapons today is their very existence. Similarly, nuclear deterrence might be what’s preventing a third world war. The destructiveness of nukes, as demonstrated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is a powerful deterrent. For nuclear war to occur, global conditions would have to be completely destabilized. I don't think any leader wants to go down in history as the one who pushed humanity back to the Stone Age. Given this, I believe nuclear weapons will always maintain the planet’s fragile geopolitical balance without being used.
