Putin Purges a key Russian General today with Ivan Popov, commander of the 58th combined arms army being arrested on charges of large scale fraud meaning the purge is striking at even more competent commanders. Russia confirmed the loss of the project 22800 "Ksyklone" vessel in Sevastapol, and are also making almost no gains in Kharkiv while taking unbelievable losses. The UN gave their condolences today for the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

If I remember correctly Popov was complaining about troop rotations and was making public pleas for more men so he could rotate his front line troops. Honestly it seems Popov is one of the few competent tactical commanders but his honesty about the situation took him out of favor.

Putin's purges are more of his old school Soviet attitudes and methods. "Corruption" when applied to anyone at the rank of Colonel or above, was always used by the Soviets as a way to show that someone, or a group, was out of favor. Popov isn't the only one who should be nervous. "Corruption", when applied to lower ranks, is used as a way to send a message that things need to be tightened up. Early in the war, there was a classic example of this when a Lieutenant, a Captain, and a Major were charged with corruption for selling off fuel. The Colonels are the ones who make the most profit off grifts like this, but none were charged. It's a way to send a message without directly dealing with people who have patrons higher up and connections. When a General gets charged, all the people who supported him and the ones who rode his coattails are also at risk, and they know it. Tends to make them even more compliant.

They started in May/24 with the deputy MoD, Ivanov, (Shoigu's deputy), who is languishing in a Central Intelligence Agency style of prison (FSB) far removed from military access. You think 100 million rubles is bad, this guy didn't bother to try and hide it. Their system is totally different, it's no wonder they starve for equipment in their front lines with such easy corruption enabled by the departmental heads who have access to budget funds. No coincidence Shoigu was demoted to the bottom of the food chain, stripped of all authority and appointed to the NSC so that he can no longer steal. His deputy Ivanov was much too blatant. You can claim loyalty issues for these arrests, but that's not for certain. Shoigu is a civil engineer, a civilian with no military background and Putin's old time friend (fishing buddy) for 20 years, who has held multiple government positions including deputy PM and leader of the United Russia party. He's a politician though and through. It's real field Generals that dictators fear, as they've earned their stripes and soldiers respect that, unlike political appointed lapdogs like Shoigu. To be fair, Putin made a name for himself 20+ years ago by purging the mass corruption and theft that was raping Russia's resources after the fall of the USSR that went on an entire decade+ unabated. He's known to crack down on this type of major theft & BS s it angers him, and it's one reason their public loved him. I have a feeling Shoigu is just being kept close to unravel more of this top level corrupted stealing going on and have no doubt he had his hand in that cookie jar too.
