It's wild that we're living in a world where Boeing is having regular major failures and basically publicly executing a whistleblower yet they are only down 4% on the month. I lived in China for a few years after finishing my undergraduate in 2013. When I got back to the US I recommended it to everyone. It was amazing in every way and I’ve never felt safer than when in Jingbian. However, 2013 was the year Xi took power. In the last 11 years it has fundamentally changed as a country. While I definitely think the people are still some of the loveliest and friendliest, the government’s obsessively authoritarian and nationalistic policies make it so hard to recommend anymore. For tourism? Absolutely go. But to live there anymore… eh, it’s tough. I still have my little Chinese flag hanging in my house though :)

People are not independent of their leaders for all you and others like to claim its completely unrelated. One way or another the people and their leaders reflect eachother. They come from the same culture, propaganda molds the people and the demands of the people mold their leaders. They live in the same wider context even if their influence or wealth differ. Not to mention all the rampant corruption and scams even on lower levels you can find examples of everywhere in China. Its not exactly Xi telling some guy to make food with gutter oil. Its a culture of getting your own and letting everyone else get fucked over if they arent your family.

For the Boeing story, a massive bit of context is that the lawsuit he was testifying in was not about Boeing’s process failures. It was a defamation case against Boeing based on his treatment after whistleblowing. A case which he had lost once and this was him appealing that. He blew the whistle on Boeing years ago and all the evidence he provided has already been given and that is all settled and done. I don’t think this is nearly as suspicious as you think, you can have a stellar witness but if the overall case isn’t strong enough they can still lose, presumably he was just as strong a witness the first time around when they lost.
@free4fiveminutes3316 ай бұрын
I think that a lawsuit that they tried to “silence him” (through defamation) is in all honesty worse than being sued for safety issues, as it implies that there are more victims that have tried similar stunts. I am not all that familiar with American law, or lawsuits in general, but based on my understanding of it, if he won that lawsuit, or if the lawsuit made it to court, could it not become a class action lawsuit and all the other employees in similar positions who had been suppressed come out of the woodworks and raise even more issues concerning safety regulation issues? At least, now that the other plaintiffs would be compensated for their testimonies (just raising safety concerns is a question of morality, I don’t believe they would get payed to come out and testify without a defamation lawsuit as Boeing failing to follow safety regulations wouldn’t lead to employess getting compensated) Edit: Feel free to correct me, I may be thinking under false pretences, or with misinformation. (Please quote your source though)
@fakjbf31296 ай бұрын
@@free4fiveminutes331 If a bunch of people all feel they’ve been wronged they can form a class action at any time, they don’t need to wait for this guy to win his case. At most seeing him win might encourage them to try pursuing, but if you’ve got enough people for a class action then most likely you’ve already got a stronger case than him so even him losing initially doesn’t mean much.

As a Canadian, I definitely don't want to vacation in China. When a Huawei executive was arrested by the RCMP in 2018 and was going to be extradited to the US for fraud charges, some Canadians were taken hostage by the Chinese government, and were kept in Chinese prison until 2021 when Canada released the Huawei executive and let them return to China. The Chinese government has a long history of this "hostage diplomacy" and I certainly don't want to risk being trapped in a foreign prison just so the Chinese Government can let their criminals avoid all consequences while they're abroad.

A little correction from a lawyer from Russia. As the constitution and law stands right now, Putin won’t be able to run for president in 2030 as this term is his second after the changes to constitution which put a restriction according to which one person can be president only two times. Befor the changes one person couldn’t be the president for more than two consecutive terms. That is why we had Medvedev. Also, because of this change from two consecutive to just two Putin anuled his term count, allowing him to have 2018-2024 and 2024-2030 terms. TLDR: If no changes will be made to the constitution again, he won’t be able to run in 2030.
