@dylanburch53795 жыл бұрын
Yea these guys are on the money luke Fink has a good video on it pretty much explains how having it in the back drops pressure and adds alot more fluid which holds more temperature also you could try running a little trans cooler between then rack and line to save it turning back on its self.

I would mount my pump as close as I could to the rack or box. Keep in mind that you're losing response time and line pressure as you increase the pressure line length.
@nickquatrini2 жыл бұрын
Has anybody tested this to confirm? I'm doing the install soon and I'm not sure where to mount the pump. But I would think in a hydraulic system the length of the line shouldn't matter because fluid doesn't compress. Therefore once the pump generates pressure that pressure would appear on the other end of the line almost instantly since the fluid doesn't have to flow to build pressure. I would think the flow rate of the line would be more vital than the length of it. Thus, if he is having issues with response he should opt for a thicker feed line, not a shorter one. Its the opposite of intercooler piping because air compresses, fluid does not. But if you have real world experience with this, I would be curious to hear what you have to say.
@3694-k5s2 жыл бұрын
@@nickquatrini I wasn't saying that the fluid would compress. The pump still has to move the fluid and that has weight and resistance. The longer the hose the greater the resistance...the slower the response time. The wall thickness and material does expand and contract and will have an effect as well. I would want the lightest system with the least resistance and deflection. A heavy or thick hose adds weight to the vehicle...not what I'd want.

It's years after the fact, but that Volvo unit puts out about 600psi and the Miata rack in an NA needs about 1100 or 1500 in an NB. A Holden Astra unit is popular and outputs 1500psi. Some people use MR2 units, but they're worse for this application at about 300psi.

A lot of good brainstorming in the comments. One comment about the voltage dropping on the skidpad runs, looking back at the video it looks like there is even a yellow light flickering every now and then(warning light?) and it looks like a low to no charge situation. Also a comment about the long runs of the fluid lines. Possibly replace with a hard line and possibly larger diameter for more volume, especially on the return. Another point about the pump possibly needing another input for full pressure output, but I assume that this pump shouldn't need that if it's been spec'd for universall use.

That’s a diesel pump which is ecu driven. Need a twr ts astra pump and also putting it in the boot will cause pressure drops and delay In the steering when you first pull the wheel on initiation. Also the belt set up is not ideal. Routing it with the smaller belt means you have lost 2/3 of the belt wrap on the Front pulley. Best way is buy a pulley for a vf commodore from Australia. They have a pulley and bracket that bolts straight onto the bolts where the alternator was and it’s about $50. Then you can still have full wrap around the bottom and will have less chance of belt slip under revs. I have all the gm part numbers for the pulley and bracket if u need them.

You mentioned the power steering pump can pull up to 80A. Are you providing the power directly from the PMU? According to the ECU Masters PMU documentation, you're getting the following amperage available. 10 x 25A(cont.), 6 x 15A(cont.) with overcurrent and overheating protection. Outputs may be paired to increase continuous current capability. Current and voltage is measured for each output Are you giving it enough whatyamacallit's to supply 80A of current?
@gordowg1wg1455 жыл бұрын
I was thinking just fit a smaller auxiliary drive pulley on the crank, but I see why you didn't go that route. The 'binding up' is usually because the pump cannot keep up with the flow required to match the rack movement and, in extreme cases, there may be problems with the fluid overheating and boiling - that may be part of the issue with your installation - have you upgraded the cooling for it's fluid* as the OEM cooler is often just a run of plain pipe in front of the radiator and it will certainly not be up to 'spirited' driving. Some of these electric pumps can draw a LOT of current, so that may need to be taken into account. Some are also controlled by either voltage or PWM, and can be modified for manually selecting the amount of assistance - you may also be able to have it driven by the ECU, if it supports it and, if you're fortunate, possible by the gear. Provided you use a reasonable size for the fittings and hoses, a rear installation shouldn't cause too much of a problem - I might suggest an accumulator (mounted to the front?), to help maintain a consisent pressure to the rack under extreme direction changes. *A small oil cooler on the return line should make a significant difference.
@Taylordrifts5 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are still on bad pump because even just sitting it was stiff. But if a new thoroughly tested pump doesn’t solve the issue then it’ll be time to change and do electric column or work on solutions. I didn’t route it though my cooler because from what I’ve seen it doesn’t overheat like a normal pump would.

I understand the pump setup wanting it to be in the rear but it just isn't going to be at its full potential like you want. You will either need to put it in the cabin somewhere, maybe there is room left under the dash because otherwise the passenger floorboard is the only place unless you can magically make space in the engine bay for it. Also, that tight bend and the hose wrapping around is being way too restrictive. (Source, I have seen many try to make it work in the trunk and I have as well on small and big cars and moving it forward to shorten the lines by half of what you have or more will make a world of difference.)

so something you need to look into and I just thought of the terminology is it but it's called pressure over length of run that use it in plumbing of houses and basically you have to know the pressure coming from the main or from the city whatever your supply isand then the length of pipe to know the pressure drop but it also will change by the diameter of the piping and you can achieve different things if you need more pressure or if you need more volume

Hmm you sure that oil isint going to get very hot in that Rack and cavitate. Do you have a cooler on the line?? Why not just go eps and let the ecu control it?? Good work I've watched most of this build and I'm not a Miata guy 👍

I'm running this volvo pump using a PWM and it works fine but mine is installed close to the rack and pinion. Haven't had a problem but I pulled mine out of a 2004 I believe volvo S40 which didn't run CAN but PWM from factory.

I put the pump in my FV rx7 and it worked great closer to the rack.

I love watching your videos. By any chance do you have a part number for the new belts after removing the power steering on the motor

my wifes nissan has eps, if you crank on it hard to make a u turn or doing some hard cornering it gets really heavy. its really weird and hard to get used to coming from vehicles with hydro or manual steering.
