Your absolutely right Matt, the handles that curve inwards at the top really does give the feeling that it slipping forward when you use the mug. I will adapt your method IF I ever get well enough to throw again, things not looking good buy "heyho" this is life, and we have to adapt don't we? Thanks, as always for demonstrating your talent with us and the narration is extremely important, so we actually know what you're doing at each point of the making. Thanks for all the tips.

You’ve just got to roll with the blows and deal with what life throws at you. What you have done is great and through no fault of yours you’ve just got to wait a bit longer. It will be majestic , I can’t wait to see the finished pieces. Keep positive. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

Your comment about attaching the handle near the top got me thinking because there are mugs that just don't balance right in your hand when you drink out of them. I think your gut feeling there might just have explained it. I know I don't like handles closer to the bottom than the top. And again, I love the tour of what's on the shelves waiting for their next step in the process. The big wood fired kiln is so awesome. It's looking so good. The wait will be sooooo worth it.

Great video Matt, handles are my pet hate! Maybe I should start using my extruder! I'll also try doing them standing up, as sitting seems to give me a bad backache. Love the shapes of your mugs.

This was a very helpful video and I appreciate it. I realize your first wood firing is behind schedule, but in a few months all that will be forgotten. Relax a bit in the meantime. Exciting times ahead.

Great video, how long do you let your handles dry before attaching them?
@MatthewKellyPottery

I don’t dry my handles before I add them. I like them softer so I can shape them after applying.

Great videos, thank you. You don't appear to cut your work off the bat? What are the bats made of? Don't the pots crack across the bottom?

Thank you Matthew for sharing your handle technique. I'm having a terrible time with hairline cracks with my non-pulled handles. I've read up on this considerably and I'm just trying to eliminate the extra steps and hassle of babying every piece. I think I'm letting my cups dry too much before getting the handle on. I was wondering how the heck you can handle them that soft but you don't really! I'm making it so hard to do it's so frustrating :( Your handles look pretty soft but just right. I have also been struggling with controlling the drying of the handles prior to attachment. Growing pains here.

Hi Matthew! Your handles ( and mugs) are amazing! Can u tell me where you found the die for your handles? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 4 жыл бұрын
I had the die custom made by a local person who does metal fabrication. I am getting some new dues made by Justin’s Makery and hope to be using those soon.

I have similar extruded handles. Got the die from North Star - one was standard and one was customized to be a bit lighter. Mathew Kelly, thank you for your generous spirit, your welcoming demeanor, and your talent that you are so willing to share with us. I am very glad to have subscribed to your channel.

Hey Matthew, the end of the handle that you attach to the top of your mug as you are flattening out the end you intend to join. Do you flatten it in a concave manner to fit the curves of the coffee mug better or just us it flat and squish it kinda to fit the profile? I done some like that in the past and I cut it concave shape on the end for fit.
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 4 жыл бұрын
I think I concave it a little. I’ll have to check next time I do handles. Haha

Hey Matthew, after you extrude your handles, do you let them firm up a while ? Thanks so very much for the advice on usingyour needle tool to cleaning up your stamps (states & stars) Works well. Thanks from Florida, Dan
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 4 жыл бұрын
No I don’t want the handles to firm up much. They’re much harder to put on if they are firm. I try to use the stiffness of clay in the extruded that I want them to be. I usually keep the cut handles covered while I put them on also to keep them from drying out.

Matt can you tell me about drying your cups on the bat . I tried it and I think my bat is too thick
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 4 жыл бұрын
The mugs will release from the bats I have when they dry enough. The material of the bat is more important than the thickness. You definitely need some kind of tempered material.

Silicon Carbide shelves from the same company that makes Advancers. Not sure on the quantity. I’ll try to count. Haha

Sorry about the ads in the middle. Thanks for watching. I don’t always get to choose where the ads go. I’ve been thinking of alternatives to having ads on my videos but it definitely helps offset the cost and time of making videos.
