Paper or plastic? Wood or glass? what do you prefer to drink your favorite beverages out of?
I'm giving a segmented wooden cup a go in this video. This is my first time making and turning one. It shouldn't be to hard. Right?
Surprisingly this project didn't have to many problems. All of the problems that it did have, I already knew where going to be a problem. So, I guess you could say. Everything went according to plan!
I hope that you enjoy the video and you get some inspiration from it!
Be good, be safe, be happy!

Great video! I personally think the main reason people say epoxy isn't food safe, is for cutting boards- if someone cut the epoxy and it chipped into the food, it would mess with you. But thats just been my understanding. I would drink out of those cups no problem! Keep it up!

Great video Trevor! So I’ve made many cups with TB on inside. I reached out to them and their official stands is that their products are not suitable for use on drinkware. That being said I totally would and have drank out of them. I found another product the is designed for use with drinkware. It is tested with hot liquids and alcohol.

I know this vid was posted 9 months ago so you may already have more knowledge on it. But there are a few food-safe epoxy resins out there that you can use. But when it comes to cups and bowls, I always recommend carnauba + bees wax mix or regular old Shellac finish.

Thank you! Yes, that’s what I ended up going with in the end. Or maybe something like a tung oil?

Carnauba / beeswax will not stand up to hot beverages, nor will shellac. They're fine if someone isn't gonna be drinking scalding coffee outta them, but even at that, they won't hold up under repeated washings, so the finish would need to be reapplied regularly if you didn't want the contents to just be soaking into the wood.

That looks like a fun project. I need a lathe. I used West Systems epoxy on a cup I made. I called them and talked to an engineer about it. They said they didn’t know if it was food safe. Probably a liability answer and yet true, they likely didn’t know. I drank from it once cause I’m still not sure. I still have no idea what I’d trust as a finish on my coffee cup. Cool video though. Keep it up.

I wonder if you used several layers of boiled linseed oil and let it cure for a month or two if that would suffice. I wouldn't put hot fluid in an epoxy finished cup. Great video and i am going to source wood to make this.

hmmmm.... I'm not sure. linseed might work, but I really couldn't say, I'm now finish expert. couldn't hurt to make a couple cups and try it on one or two. So awesome, I'm excited to see what you come up with!

Good job on the video. My understanding is that epoxy is food safe, as with most finishes, once it is fully cured. Stumpy Nubs addresses it in a video. Check him out. Keep up the good work.

As a resin artist - this video hurts me. I truly believe that all types of epoxy should be treated as toxic and non food safe because almost all are actually non food safe. The ones that claim to be food safe are only food safe IF they are properly mixed and cured. If anything is mixed into it (mica powders, pigments, and so on) anything the packaging says about it being food safe goes completely out the window. Companies claiming food safe means that he resin parts alone are safe for food to touch once fully cured. (But you still do not want anything overly hot, acidic or alcoholic to touch it because the epoxy will break down. You also do not want to clean it with harsh chemicals) This epoxy on a piece like this should be fine, but i think it is important to note that there is a difference between coating epoxy and casting epoxy and people can’t just go out and buy an art resin and expect to have healthy lungs for the rest of their lives.

You’d need to drink the epoxy or resin in order to get the toxins your speaking of, or eat a lot of the cured wood. Once cured, it’s essentially plastic.
