I recently took my T7 on some knarly 2 track offroad and it was a blast. A lot more capable than i thought it would be. I used to have a dr650 and have to say i think i would have been better off keeping it and upgrading the suspension. It was a great motorcycle. Id say the T7 is a 60/40 and the Dr is a 40/60 on/offroad. Both fantastic motorcycles. If the T7 magically dropped 50lbs it would be perfect. Im hoping Yamaha makes a tenere 500 with a single cylinder engine, that would be the ticket for me.

100% agree!!! The Tenere has no business venturing so far off the pavement, yet it does incredibly well at just about everything! That is of course if you can keep it moving! If it was just a tad lighter and thinner, it would definitely be my bike of choice for a wide variety of terrains. For now though, the DR is one heck of a consolation and is certainly an amazing platform for an ADV build!

I’m glad to see this comment. I’ve come very close, more than a few times, to talking myself into giving up the DR to get a T7. Instead I kept the DR and got a cheap, used, gen 2 DL650 to pair with my DR. I’m much happier with that choice.

Nice video… Purchased a 2012 DR that had some mods (pumper, pipe, muffler, skid plate, luggage rack, risers, bar and bark busters) Added the 5.3, Corbin seat, Madstad windshield and Metzeler Sahara enduro 3 tire set. First ride with new additions was to do some sections of the Chattahooche BDR, about 80 miles from my home base, no interstate required. Great trip, highly recommend. At about 95 miles on the stock tank I’d have to switch to reserve, at about 35 miles with stock seat I wanted off the bike ; ) Last week rode 230 miles with about 100 on the interstate to visit a friend. The DR did just fine on the interstate, solid and stable at 70-80 sustained with the occasional blast to 90 to create traffic separation. Much prefer the “back routes” in my state as they are well maintained with much less traffic. Thankfully passing slower traffic has not been outlawed and the DR is much more enjoyable to cruise at 55-65 with the occasional blast to pass. If I was satisfied with a pavement destination I’d have picked up a FJ1300, off the beaten path, the DR does it for me.

Still watching.. I'm telling you there is an underestimated touring comfort mod that no one talks about on the dr platform. Highway pegs! Mounted on lower forward crash bars! Really opens up the position available on long mile runs on highways! And immediate improvement in comfort. Even more so if you load with luggage and have a top bag you can lean back against and have some stretching room for ur legs to just relax with. They sell crash bar specific highway pegs that fold and conform to the round bar of the crash bar. So when off road it's out of the way practically invisible.

I don't know anything about the t7, except that it's a pretty bike. The things you say about the DR is absolutely true. I have opened up both the DR and XR by changing exhaust, jetting, and airbox mods. The DR still runs more like a KLR, smooth power delivery in very linear. The XR is just more power at the bottom in mid-range of the power band. I think the power mods do more to the XR than they do to the DR. I've done all the same mods to my gen 1 KLR. The XR is just far more snappier off the line. It seems to be a combination of the XR having more of a bottom end cam and no rear wheel cush drive. All of these bikes are a lot of fun. The XR is more twitchy in every way. It's handling ask for more concentration and its power band is abrupt... So much fun. The DR is very stable on the mountain fire roads, as in Arkansas, it's power band is very stable, even with power mods. It's very much like my gen 1 KLR, very stable power delivery. The XR650L reminds me of my XR 350R off-road. You mount one of these bikes and the bike is begging you to concentrate to be rewarded. The XR expects you to know when to rear wheel brake through a turn or light the rear wheel up and slide through it. You and your dad are a lot of fun to watch. Your videos make my week. I like the longer videos best, but I also watch the short ones. You guys rock! By the way, I'm really looking forward to your suspension mods for the DR. Thank you so much for making videos... T7 is heavier and more powerful. Ultimately, you'll always have to work it harder than a lighter bike with similar power to weight ratio, the top-end on power is just different. The tenere is definitely an ADV bike. A little more steady and luggage friendly than its smaller buddy.

With the Tenere you're wrestling another 90 pounds around offroad. On-road it works to keep the bike stable and planted, but offroad it's got the same problem the KLR does, it's way too tubby... The DR650 and the XR650L are about the perfect all-around daulsport bikes in my opinion.
@stevecrocker6904
@stevecrocker6904 Ай бұрын
good clean fun. I have a KTM790 adventure S which is great to ride on freeway and back roads, what with its cruise control etc. But I've been getting back onto my DR650 recently and totally enjoyed a recent 1300kms over 4 days in the saddle. I kept the DR because I'd gradually changed everything I needed to after taking it to central Australia from Sydney several times. The suspension tuned to my weight and the Mikuni TM40 carb conversion (although the modified standard carburettor works well too) with big bore exhaust has certainly made the bike much better at speed. The Acerbis 22 litre tank (I think it was advertised at 20L originally but they expand given age) gives me up to 400kms range. The KTM I'll sell one day - the Dr650, now made to measure for me, I'll always keep. Into my 70s now and it's nice to know I can pick it up even loaded if perhaps I have a little spill on the rougher terrain

The Tenere is a street bike that looks a little like it could do dualsport, but in my estimation it is not an adventure bike because there are way too many points of failure on it that you do not want to drag offroad with you. No one wants an electric fuel pump or water pump or radiator or thermostat or fuel injectors or hoses to fail on them 40 miles out in the bush. A DR650 is simple, it's not failure prone, and if something does fail you can easily fix it where it sits if you carry just a few extra parts with you (reg/rectifier, cdi box, ect.) . It a matter of which bike is more likely to leave you stranded way out in the middle of nowhere, and the answer is the Tenere.

T7 - They are an awesome machine, but I doubt I will own one again. They are a bit overkill for the type of riding I prefer to do. I shouldn't have gotten "shiny object syndrome" back in 2022 when I bought mine. I'd be money ahead! You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that once it tips past a certain point, which isn't very far, they are going to hit the ground. The older and less strong we are, the less they will tip before they are a goner. I pertnear dropped mine as I got on it to load it into my trailer when I bought it. Had the sales person not put up her arm to brace me, I would have fallen and the T7 would have been on top of me. That should have been a sign that it was too big and heavy for me.
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions Ай бұрын
Agreed! They're really, really, impressive bikes and have loads of both on and off road potential. However, unless you're willing to ride them to their full potential, every time you get on... they're a bit much. Smaller, lighter bikes are just much less stressful!
@DualSportDoug
@DualSportDoug Ай бұрын
@@SwankyCatProductions The "less stressful" part is one reason I sold mine. I do a lot of riding solo. The T7 is heavy enough that I realized I'd never be able to pick it up if I dropped it. I had both a DR650 and XR650L and the big difference was anytime you went above 70 mph. The DR would run at 75 mph effortlessly and when passing a semi would blast right up to 100 mph without feeling like you were abusing it. The XR650L felt like it went completely flat above 70 mph. The DR was far more stable on both the highway and the dirt. The DR is rock solid when blasting past a semi truck and even at 90 mph on dirt roads. The Honda is much more twitchy and above 70 mph on dirt roads, it’s very twitchy. The DR handles better virtually everywhere because of the center of gravity and is much more confidence inspiring when sliding around dirt corners. Only in a few limited situations does the extra suspension of the Honda come into play. For me, a DR with a bigger tank and aftermarket seat and the right tires is hard to beat. I don’t care about wind protection at all. It doesn’t bother me.

Yes everyone needs two bikes. One for this.. one for that.😂 In my case i have a 24 klx 300 and want a versys x 300 to pair it with.

Haha, yeah it's a bit ironic that when you get into "dual sport" motorcycles, you end up needing more than one 🤣.

I can't recommend a dl650 V strom enough. Used they cost almost nothing, are stellar road and gravel bike. They pair with a small bore dual sport nicely

Throw some Hideneau K60's or Shinko 700's on it and that bike will smooth right out on the highway.

Not sure why you would go with a SMALLER front sprocket. The DR650 has plenty of low-end grunt with the 15T sprocket. Going to the 14T would reduce top speed and make you have to shift out of second faster? Why? But I'm pushing a DL1000XAL8, so that's nearly two of the DL650's.

I did the same on mine , for me even though it has plenty of grunt, in the mountains on west where I live it was geared way too high in 1st gear downhill. I did it to gain more engine braking in 1st . You could idle at 12 mph in first gear on stock gearing which to me was way too fast for technical mountain riding

Why not?! It certainly doesn't seem to NEED the 15 on the freeway and it definitely benefits from the 14 off road. With the stock gearing you end up dragging the clutch a lot on technical trails and single track. The 14 tooth gets rid of that, and gives me the ability to easily lift the front tire over obstacles!

@@SwankyCatProductions I see. I was wondering about it because seem like all the video or comments on the bike seem good but that is it. Like whenever they compare bikes no mention the aprilla that why is why ask.

Yeah, definitely. Long trips with less intense off road, the Tenere is what you'd want.
