Tetris came out in 1989 on the Gameboy, there was no hold feature. 1999 The New Tetris came out on N64 and introduced the hold feature. So for a decade there was no hold feature but for now almost twice as long there has been a hold feature, so yeah I'd say holding is a standard feature.

The only reason it's the best selling game ever is because it came free with the gameboy and ever since then people have just tried to get that original gameboy version feel back, and don't give a shit about "holding". People get the mobile phone version thinking it'll bring them back to a time when they were a kid playing it on gameboy, but play it for 5 minutes before realising it sucks as a mobile app, and it always just sucked in general anyway but you just didn't realise it when you were only a dumb kid, and nostalgia blinded you until you actually went back and tried it again years later and realised tetris was never that good.

That's the thing, though - original tetris was just about clearing lines (in which ever way the player sees fit) so it clearly hasn't registered that he's supposed to be stacking for tetris or linking chains. I was the same when I first played tetris vs.

Ryan Plays well when you play as much as I do it'll eventually become as natural and easy to set up but not t spin triples they can still be tricky sometimes

Fun Fact: A huge chunk of the characters are voiced by English voice actors from some famous anime. eg: T is the voice of Saitama from One-Punch Man, Ringo is the voice of Taiga from ToraDora, and they also got the voices of Son Gohan from Dragon Ball Super, and major characters from Hyperdimension Neptunia. On a side note, glad to see that GG are actually giving this game the attention it needs!!

Fun fact: Ringo is the word "apple" in Japanese. That makes the fact that the character Ringo, in this game, holding an apple all the more interesting. The more you know. And knowing is half the battle.

I have never in my life heard about Tetris holding pieces. My old Game-boy can attest to this.
