I've gone full circle with all my mods on my pontoon and kayaks. A few years ago - I had all these steering mods, trolling mods etc. Now I find them just a hassle. Currently on my pontoon, I now just use a "Minn Kota Max" trolling motor (Has PWM built in and not a ton more $ really) - and I just turn my seat sideways on the pontoon, and rest my feet on the right pontoon. It's actually super comfortable (especially when trolling) - I can reach the trolling motor nooo problem, and there's no extra wires cables, etc. On my kayak, I used to have a rear trolling motor added with those steering cable mods. Ditched all that - now I just have the motor locked "straight" full-time and use my paddles to steer (like the person in this video). Sometimes less is more, so I've learned lol. It's easy to get caught up in all the mods.

Yeah I can definitely understand the simplicity ideal. I actually got a little paddleboard last summer with a cloth back "seat" that I take up to small mountain lakes. Definitely a lot nice than lugging around the pontoon with all the mods and whatnot. I definitely enjoyed the DIY part of the mods, though. :)

Cool mod. I saw Fishin N’ Stuff do a DIY battery box out of an ammo can. That might be a cleaner way to store the electronics instead of a Tupperware. But it’s cool that you’re messin around with that and figuring it out.

I actually ordered a new battery box last night ;) My battery is a bit smaller than a standard battery and I SHOULD be able to house the PWM in the same box with the battery. That'll clean up a lot of that tupperware mess lol

While I love ice fishing up here in Alaska, I am missing my pontoon. I just bought it last summer it has been great. No mods so far, bone stock but really a lot of fun out on the lakes.
@FishandForage3 жыл бұрын
Lucky! I would have to drive 5 or 6 hours to find any ice fishing, I think.

We have so many lakes around here that I can go fishing during my lunch break. I just drive my truck onto the ice, pop a hole, and catch them sitting in the cab of my truck. During the summer I was hitting the lakes before work with my pontoon.

That's like a dreamland, man... What fish are you catching from the ice? Trout up there?

@@FishandForage mainly rainbow trout from the lakes I fish but I'm thinking of heading up north for a lake trout trip.

Mike here again....im doing the same mod on my XT. Here are my pics for ideas purposes the water proof box was like 2bucks at Walmart I'm gonna velcro it to the fly patch spots and use the intricate loop on the box as a fail safe attachment lanyard.
What you see on the lid are the fwd/rev switch, speed controll knob. The digital read out leds are hot blued inside of the waterproof box, and its see throug, so u can see it. It should work good, when u find good trolling speed, so you can duplicate it...

@@mikecarnakis6243 Dang I don't think pics work on youtube. You can send em to my Instagram if you want! I am working on putting my battery and the PWM into a battery box, soon. And I think I want to try to set up a CAT-5 cable for the hand controls. Way less bulky than the wiring I have now.

I've just ran across your channel this morning. I've subscribed and have been watching your videos relating to the Colorado XL Pontoon system. I've been talking with a friend who has one. Been reading reviews and seeing what other pontoon systems are out their. I keep coming back to this Colorado rig. If you were to start over would you buy another Colorado XL? I'm thinking you would based on your videos. What LB thrust of trolled are you using? Would a larger one do you better? Thank you in advance, and I appreciate the ability of watching your videos on the pontoon boat. It has me sold from your videos and all the others I've been watching.

Glad the videos have been helpful! I use a 30lb thrust motor. For most lakes I am on, that scoots me around well enough. Plus any bigger and it'd be too heavy in my opinion. And would I buy another one of these? Totally, I really like it and it's great for my apartment. Packs away small and gets me out on the water! Hard to complain. :)

@@FishandForage Thanks for the reply. This Colorado pontoon system certainly looks like the direction in going to head. My biggest concern now is transporting. I'm going to try to carry it on top of my truck topper. With hardware in my lower back in not sure how that's going to work out. Worse case I'll get a light weight trailer to bring it along. Thanks again! Looking forward to your next post.

@@richardcooper38 If you got the rig to do it, transporting it in one piece is nice. I have to break it down to transport it. Adds 15-20 minutes of setup and teardown, but it's not too bad IMO!
