Yes, you can compress the PSS Shaft Seal while the vessel is in the water.

I’ve used GFO or GTU packing (graphite/Teflon) for years on stainless or nickel alloy shafts. Some just don’t want to drip when running and yet they stay cold. The secret is to not compress it and let it leak at first. Then adjust while underway. Typically they need adjustments once every three years, less than a quarter turn. At that rate the packing will outlast most boats. When I’ve had to pull a bent shaft, the area where the packing was looked perfect. Never use graphite containing packing on a shaft that has a yellow color as it may be subject to severe anodic corrosion.

I think there should be three points of contact with the set screws. Not sure why it’s only two with the design.

My buddy almost sunk his boat last year when the rotor slid forward,, it's not a design too pinch locking screws against stainless steel it's too hard of steel,, needs a backup l put hose clamps against the rotor now.will give you peace of mind for under 10 dollars

I installed a double split collar on the shaft to prevent the rotor from sliding back and losing compression.

Shouldn’t the vent hose be attached to the hose barb with two hose clamps? This would be proper practice for other hoses below the waterline, and is indicated in the instructions.

how tight should the hose clamps be? thanks

Just bought a sailboat with your shaft seal installed. The vent hose is not taken above the water line, but rather out a through hull fitting at the bottom of the hull about 6 inches below the barb. Is this appropriate? If so, I assume I would need to burp the bellows after launching. Is that correct?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 2 жыл бұрын
This is pushing passive water flow to the PSS Shaft Seal, which is just fine. No need to burp the PSS when launching either.

I had mine fail once when the rotor slid back, decompressing the bellows. It swamped the main hull of my trimaran. The cause, btw... was my fault, from turning the shaft by hand inside, by turning it by the rotor. NEVER TURN THE SHAFT BY THE ROTOR! Fix? I bailed it out and re set the rotor. Then... As a safety I placed a doughnut zinc on the engine side of the rotor with a very small bead of releasable caulk to fill the 1/16" gap. It could never happen again, and the safety is dirt cheep.

We recommend replacing the rubber bellow every six years with a PSS Maintenance Kit. More info here: www.shaftseal.com/pss-maintenance-kit.html

Is there a 7/8"(shaft) to 1.3 " (tube) seal?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc Жыл бұрын
We do not make a PSS Shaft Seal for that shaft and stern tube combination. I would recommend ordering a PSS Shaft Seal for a 7/8" shaft and 1.25" stern tube outside diameter. The rubber bellow will stretch over to fit onto your 1.3" stern tube.

What is the downside of over compressing the bellows a little?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 3 жыл бұрын
No real downside to over-compressing the PSS. You can compress as much as you need, but you will reach a point where the bellow can't physically compress any further.

Quesion: Why would my PSS shaft seal vent be plugged by design? Isn't this vent supposed to allow water to fill the seal?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 6 жыл бұрын
The PSS Shaft Seal can be plugged if the vessel will not exceed 10 knots. At those low speeds it is not necessary to provide cooling to the PSS Shaft Seal. Out of the box we only plug rudder seals or when a customer requests it.
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 6 жыл бұрын
Also would like to mention, a plugged seal will need to be manually burped to purge air when the vessel is launched and in any case where air may be trapped in the stern tube / seal.

We have two new 1 1/4 PSS shaft seals on our twin engine power boat. They have bout 60-hours of run time. The bellows and carbon seal vibrate sideways at low and high speeds, 1000-2000 RPM. Can you comment about the possible causes?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 3 жыл бұрын
Some vibration is normal. Is the sideways vibration causing a leak? Was the full 3/4" of compression done at the time of installation? Usually, excessive vibration is caused by something other than the PSS. For instance, the propeller shaft could be hitting the inner bore of the carbon stator due to it not being centered. You can try adjusting how the bellow sits on your stern tube to align more with the propeller shaft. Feel free to reach out to us directly, and we can help you further at info@pyiinc.com

Can the PSS shaft seal be safely installed with boat in water?
@PYIinc

As long as the two mating surfaces of the carbon stator and stainless steel rotor maintain constant contact that should be ok to do in the water.

Thanks for the informative video. To go a little further, I've owned my boat with pss seals for approx 3 years. Following use, I would always find salt water in my bilge and had no idea where it was coming from. It was often mixed with a little mud (from our river bottom). I'm thinking, when in close quarter maneuvering into the slip in shallow water with multiple direction changes, would a weakly compressed shaft seal let water in? I've been in the bilge/engine room underway and all is dry, but since I pilot the boat into the dock, I may be missing the seal letting a little water in.

Thanks so much for the info. It's been making me crazy since boat ownership, I'm going to have someone at the helm make some direction changes to mimic backing into slip while I watch seals. Its the one thing I haven't done yet. My controls are singular (transmission/throttle in one) so the RPM drops on diesel engines are pretty radical. I have positive water feed.

I have a PSS and for some reason the shaft hose is connected to my heat exchanger. I bought it like that, have you ever seen it connected like that? Also it seems that raw water is entering through the PSS and flowing back through the exhaust to the raw water pump, when not running. Is this normal? It seems that this setup could ruin my engine.
@psluhn
@psluhn 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response. The PSS is applied to a sail boat, and the sail boat diagram it looks like I need to run the P/U to a vent above the water line, Is this correct? Or do you still recommend added the vented loop, if so is there one that you recommend using for your PSS system?

For some reason I do not see the PYI answers to this comment. I see only the comments to PYI response. And I am interested in those answers because the installation on my boat is similar - Out of the heat exchanger there is a hose connected to the PSS. The engine is a Yanmar 3G - never goes to 12 knots - Is it better to disconnect this hose and let it vent ? I have a problem with the PSS, water is coming in 4 L per hour. Any suggestion ? Regards

I have a PSS dripless shaft that leaks at rest, I cleaned it as recommended and then with sandpaper 600 as recommended. It is still dripping. I do see salt built up around the carbon. What is the solution? Also when I pull back to place the sandpaper in between a rush of water comes out. Is this normal?
@PYIinc
@PYIinc 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, when you separate the mating surfaces of the carbon stator and stainless steel rotor it is normal for water to spill out. These two mating surfaces are what create the watertight seal of the PSS. To assist you with your dripping while at rest we'll need to know some more information. Is this on a sailboat or power boat? How old is the PSS? What is the shaft diameter and outside diameter of your stern tube? Please email us at info@pyiinc.com or call us at 425-355-3669, and we'll be happy to help you out.

Absolutely! Same part numbers are used for rudder shaft applications. Depending on your shaft size we offer low speed PSS Shaft Seals, with the only difference being that those do not have a hose barb in the carbon. More info here: www.shaftseal.com/pss-rudder-seal.html

Guys, I'm seeing a lot of videos of these failing! I am seeing..I spent two thousand on a set of the PSS pros and have my boat on the lift and removed the old bronze wax packing boxes and replaced them with yours. I'm concerned about putting the boat in the water and I'm afraid.. I'm running Cummins V-504M diesels..
