Nestled on the southwestern coast of the Peloponnese, Pylos, also known as #Navarino, offers a #fabulous mix of sun-soaked beaches and rich historical #heritage. It has a population of 2400 residents and lies 274 km southwest of #Athens, 208 km south of #Patras and 52 km west of #Kalamata, the capital of #Messenia region.
Pylos, the main harbour on the Bay of Navarino, is built amphitheatrically and preserves many houses from the 19th century. Picturesque, pastel colour buildings, Greek orthodox churches, lively #promenade, vibrant squares, unlimited beauty and #panoramic view!
The #town was a significant kingdom in #Mycenaean Greece. The remains of the "Palace of #Nestor " dating back to the 13th century BC, is located 11 km north of Pylos. Explore the rooms, corridors, and storage chambers of this ancient administrative and cultural center, and imagine life in the Mycenaean era.
Delve into the rich history of the area by visiting the Pylos Archaeological #Museum. Housing artifacts, ancient pottery and jewelry, tell the story of Pylos' historical importance, also highlighted in Homer’s poems.
Perched on a hill overlooking the bay, #Niokastro #Fortress is a historic landmark that offers panoramic views. Built in the 16th century, the fortress is a testament to the region's #strategic significance throughout history. At a close #distance, Pylos #aqueduct composes a fascinating scenery, reviving #tales of centuries past.
On October 20th 1827, a naval #battle took place in Navarino Bay. The allied forces from #Britain, #France, and #Russia decisively defeated #Ottoman and #Egyptian forces which were trying to suppress the Greek Independence.
Gialova, is a small picturesque #settlement that will charm its visitors. The natural beauty of the #lagoon in the north, the extraordinary beaches and the history of the wider area offer you more than enough reasons to visit this magical place. It is situated a short drive from Pylos and is surrounded by some of the top luxurious hotel complexes and #golf courses of the Mediterranean, including #Costa Navarino!
Gialova and #Divari beaches are two refreshing oasis in walking distance.
Voidokilia Beach, meaning cow’s belly, is often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Voidokilia Beach is a pristine crescent of golden sand surrounded by lush greenery and turquoise waters. The calm and shallow sea, combined with the picturesque landscape, make it an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the nearby Gialova Lagoon, a #natura 2000 #wetland.
Nearby lies the magnificent old Navarino Fortress.
Follow a norrow passage to reach #Glossa beach, a secret #paradise behind #Voidokoilia beach. Enjoy the crystal clear waters, while many visitors use the local mud clay for therapeutic purposes. Next to it lies a mycenean tomb, with awesome view.
Romanos Beach is ideal for a more secluded experience. A serene stretch of coastline flanked by dunes and pine trees. The tranquil atmosphere, clear waters, and fine golden sand create a perfect setting.
Further north we find Marathopoli, a quiet village with amazing turquoise waters.
