Thank you guys. I agree, one of my favourite places, beginning to struggle for places and ideas though now, at least easy for me to visit without a lot of time and costs! any thoughts or ideas be appreciated. Thought I may do a little as a foreigner living in Greece but be a change of direction.

Thank you, a truly wonderful video, a gift to everyone fortunate enough to find it! Just a small point, Odysseus' son Telemachus visits Nestor's palace in the Odyssey. In the Iliad, Nestor is the wise old man in the Greek (Achaian) army besieging Troy.

Loved this video so much, very informative and it brought back so many memories. I did that walk up to the old castle from the beach with a big old VHS video camera strapped to my back in 1990! Returned a few years ago with a Nokia phone! 😅
@GreeceExplored Жыл бұрын
I assume not a lot has changed since the 90s? The beach route looked hard to me, barely visible.
@authentictuscany Жыл бұрын
@@GreeceExplored The main square is still more or less the same, the waterfront to the left as you look at the sea has been spruced up a lot since the 90s. The beach route up to the castle was tough even though I was much younger. it was scary too with big cobwebs between the bushes and big spiders!

Of all your beautiful videos, this one is the most stunning. Maybe because I'm partial. I looked at that pyramidal mountain every day for years - now only during my visits. The next trip is in 10 days, so getting all psyched up and excited about new explorations of the ancient sites. Love the path to the castle - it's so quintessentially Greek countryside. I've never been to that castle, only to the cave underneath, so it's wonderful to see those views. It really is a treat!

I am so glad you enjoyed my vid, and they are fantastic views from the top. I went early, about 0730 and the sun was rising which was great. The path is easy, and enjoyable, once in the castle it is a bit, riskier to take care!

What a fabulous video of a most fabulous part of Greece!. It's also very familiar to me, as I used to live just to the north from Pylos.. I was there again, it seems, at the same time as you, in late April - May, and this was a much needed fix, before my next trip in Autumn. 😊 Voidokilia is gorgeous; the bit with the Mycenaean tholos is thick with orchids in spring. Platania trees are closely related to London Planes, with leaves like those of sycamores.

With the old castle the spot facing Voidokilia were you say dont come here to enter the castle, just below it is a massive cave where locals say it is the legendary cave of the Cyclops were Odysssyus landed during his journey back to Ithaca from the Trojan war. Great work with your videos!

Awesome video! I’ll be staying in Pylos for a few nights in early October. Where do I park to visit the old castle and hike to the beach?
@GreeceExplored4 ай бұрын
you have to drive around the coast line all the way to the southern foot of the cliff face. if you look on Google maps you can spot the car park at the end of the beach, the opposite end to Voidokilia beach. It takes about 15 mins from Pylos.

Another great video. Thank you so much. After making myself mental trying to plan a 30 day tour of the Peloponnese on the KTEL bus system I decided that I best rent a car. Added this to my overflowing bucket list. Do you have a preferred rental car company? Thanks
@GreeceExplored Жыл бұрын
Car is the way, only way. I used to have one simple rule with Greek hire cars. Never pick one up after dark, and photograph it all, or video it when you do!! I used to use Avis, but I think any of the majors are fine. Easy to pick up in the airport. My brother in law went cheap once, Took 40 mins to get the car delivered to the airport, and had zero petrol when it was, so her had to fill up on the airport (shell) and v expensive!!
@UpintheairFL Жыл бұрын
@@GreeceExplored thanks! I was looking at picking up at the Athens airport using a major rental company. Then after rush hour scampering off to Nafplion and stopping in Corinth. Very exciting Just need to figure out this credit card insurance coverage issue Great advise on pix plus video. Will email myself a copy to archive just in case I have phone issues.

@@UpintheairFL I know the drive extremely well, it is easy and fun, come off the motorway at the red rocks after the 4th toll... you will see it, sign posted to Namea. Do it in the daylight, the drive along the Olympia Othos, along the coast is fantastic, then over the Corinth Canal, and left at the Acrocorinth. After Dervanakia (the pass), just before you turn left to Nafplio, (straight on to Argos) there is a good toilet stop / coffee if you want.
@UpintheairFL Жыл бұрын
@@GreeceExplored Thanks for the tips. From different forums I understand parking in Argos can be a challenge. Using Nafplio as a hub for six days to do day trips. All tasty suggestions welcome
@GreeceExplored Жыл бұрын
@@UpintheairFL Nafplio is a good place for trips. Park at the port in Nafplio, huge carpark, will be busy though. Be careful not to get blocked in, but huge, always room. The three castles in Nafplio are worth a look. My fav restaurant there is La Gratella. Walk the coastal path to the 'beach' too. Worth the 15 mins each way... though not for the beach. Beyond - Argos Castle and Roman theatre - under-rated and quiet - Mykines - of Course, Epidaurus, of course. If you fancy it I would Recommend Ancient Messini too, about 2 hours drive near Kalamata, but my god, the best I have visited. yet to publish the Video, if you like that sort of thing. If you want a proper beach for a day, drive to Tolo, 290 mins, or Paralio Astros, 40 mins, Astros is better, and the drive round the coast is amazing. I like The Acropolis of Tiryns, on the outrskirts of Nafplio, where the 12 labours of Hercules were set. When you drive theouth Milos, its ancient name was Lerna, whre the Hydra was killed by Hercules, and Namea, where Hercules slew the Lion. When are you going?
@vincentmcnabb9394 ай бұрын
You need to read about the Battle of Pylos and the capture of the Spartans on Spachteria in 425 BC. The first time a Spartan army surrendered. Thucydides tells the story in Book 3 of his history of the Peloponnesian War. It’s an engrossing tale.
@GreeceExplored4 ай бұрын
Thank you I will have a look, I need a different angle next time I go down there too!
@vincentmcnabb9394 ай бұрын
@@GreeceExploredPlease do; you’ll be greatly intrigued and it will transform the whole area for you. There is a Mycenean wall and well on the island that are referred to by Thucydides and still stand. The area where you ascend to the first castle - the southern opening to the bay - was fortified by the Athenians. It is a hunter turned hunter story. An incredible and captivating story from beginning to end. No other campaign in the Peloponnesian War is better understood and so vividly displayed by the existing geography. Thank you very much; your commentary and footage are excellent. 👍
