Great video Tom. I fondly remember using the carpet square inside a cardboard box on for my very first BB gun, the Daisy 1894 spitting' Image. Kevin in CT

for my co2 pistols I shoot into the large size coffee cans through the plastic lid, with a rolled up old towel on the inside. worked great for both bb's and pellets. even with my Crosman 1322 .22cal at 10 pumps.

1050 denier coated ballistics nylon holds up to ~700fps in a curtain trap fine for BB's. I built an over engineered 36x30x18 inch BB trap with 4 curtains of the stuff and nothing has even scratched the first sheet of nylon. It should also be fine for wad cutter pellets, and in theory pointed ones too, but I have never tried since I have my old .22 trap and have no need. FWIW, and even though this video is about BB traps, my .22 trap is close to 25 years old now and essentially the same as the 45 year old one my father taught me to shot on which is much better made and still in use to this day. So for a pellet trap just spend the money and buy a quality .22 trap and be done with the problem forever.

Good info. I made a trap for Airsoft BBs that uses tyvek envelopes that you can get for free. It holds the envelopes into an arrangement very similar to the ballistic curtains you showed. I'm curious if it would stop the steel BBs as well. It also uses a $1 door mat in place of the steel backstop. It's held up to at least 1000 rounds so far. The design and video are FREE if anyone wants to try it out. I remember waaaay back in the day, I shot mostly pellets, just because it was much easier to stop and control them. I'm also thinking about making another version that uses strips made from folded over duct tapes to make the 'curtains'. Should cost less than $5 to make. You might even be able to make a couple of them for $5. Cheap materials+ a little labor+ some imagination is all it takes. I got to fit in 100 rounds of practice shooting today, without even having to leave the kitchen.

I wonder how well a normal steel bullet trap would work if the bottom was cut out and a kind of hole was put in that had something like a carpet at the bottom, so it would also easily catch the BBs.

I use a styrofoam block from the local Tractor Supply. They get them out of gun safes and other hollow items. They're about 12"x24"x18". I shoot a .177 out of my Beeman at about 1,100-1,200 fps and .22 out of the same gun (interchangeable barrels) at about 900-1,000 fps at it and I've never had a pellet pas through. I use the alloy pellets sold by Gamo with the ballistic tip. I also shoot pellets at it from CO2 pistols and an old Crosman 760 pump master at full power. Measured the penetration holes once and they only penetrated about 3"-5" and pellets about 6"-8" max.

i got this airsoft rifle, automatic fire shoots over a hundred bb's in a clip, electric. it's a cool toy but i see these bb catchers, i did a simple one with a cardboard box putting a target over the opening, caught the bb's just fine. but i want something that's layered, catches the bb's in different jars attached to different outer ring sections like a target has. say it was pvc pipe different sizes, they were bolted together in a grid pattern, each ring has a tube like path that leads to a jar that catches the bb's. you could then gauge on automatic fire of 100 bb's where all 100 landed if they all went into the pvc pipes different sizes. the jars could be marked for different point systems, so many in each jar worth so many points and could actually accurately add up 100 shots at a time or even 1,000 where all of them landed calculating the specific quantities of each goal hit, instead of just putting a target paper over something that catches the bb's and looking at the holes put in the target.

Dunno... If you put a few old shirt rags or whatever into the bottom of the Champion Heavy Duty .22lr trap and use a sheet of cardboard behind the paper targets that covers the front of it all - it oughta work pretty well for BBs also. I have though built my own traps slightly differently than these commercial ones..

Great video and explanations i learned alot and glad i found this video never realised that bb and pellet traps could be dangerous if used for wrong amo . I was looking to make a trap for both types of amo and wounder if you could tell me how thick i need to make the Duct putty in my trap for guns shooting just under 500 fps , theres is no price on safety people ,dont try and save a dollar it could cost you more then you know

I am guessing the duct seal/ballistic putty would work for 22 high power pellets, 50 and 68 caliber steel balls?

Actually I use lead from a car battery in the steel trap and works very well. Stop pellets from a Hatsan HT135 .22 (30J average energy) efficiently, including short distances.

Would a steel bullet trap with duct seal inside work for both pellets and bb's.
@HelmutDoork9 жыл бұрын
Actually rolled up newspapers or old shirts in a cardboard box work well if you have a few inches of stacked magazines in the back. The only problem I had with bb's is the pistol was so weak the bb's were bouncing off the cardboard front of the box!

Quick question, would a thick blanket or two have the same effect as carpet? I'm thinking about getting a low powered BB gun (300-320 fps) like a red Ryder
@pyramydair8 жыл бұрын
It would have a similar effect. Put on some safety glasses and try a few test shots before you let the kids try.

the new bbs deform because they are copper coated lead . so them 22lr traps will be fine

No, you have to pay extra from them. Also a lot of bb guns warn not to use copper coated lead bbs for whatever reason.

love how gaylord acts like he knows and doesnt. those "pellet traps that stop a 22lr bullet" is old and outdated. current traps are round cournered to loop the projectile back into the backing plate and absord all remaining energy by friction while rolling. which are rated for BB's yet he just said they arent for bb's at all but for lead. also, back a long time ago gaylord did a article saying the optimal twist ratio for a pellet for a airgun was 1:30 twist, however FX has debunked this already and found that 1:24 is the perfect twist ratio because gyroscopic inertia and balance yet gaylord still swears by the 1:30 rate. catalogs, usually have laminated or heavy stock inner pages surrounded by a harder thicker cover, when primarily catalogs (phone books) are a hard cover with regular non coated inner pages that are not hard at all. i shoot my daisy 880s the exact same gun he holds in this video and shoot bb's at 10m indoors regularly at full power (750fps confirmed by a chronograph) into catalogs however understanding ballistics i use soft un treated inner pages and never once have i ever had a BB bounce back at me nor have i ever found one anywhere inside the shooting area or outside unless i dumped a ton when loading. i even shoot my steel home made pellet trap that can stop a 30-06 bullet with ease and never once had a ricochet or bounce back happen because the trap was built properly unlike the last trap he showed gaylord, your old. and misinforming people, you need to stop. kinda like you told people on the yellow forum 3 years ago the brown box crosman pellets are IDENTICAL to the tins. when i posted that they werent and gave proof from crosman in an email he had nothing to say. getting paid to falsely advertise a product for a company hes endorsed by is a fucked off tackic to put food on the table and you should be absolutely fucking ashamed
