Seeing the randomized codes for doors and locks reminded me of an experience in high-school. I actually made a math game once in a high-school coding class. We had to make one to test middle schoolers math skills. I wanted the questions to be randomized so that it had variety. I made a game where 4 viruses are trying to destroy your computer. You had to answer 4 questions correctly to destroy them all, and you had 3 shields that would get destroyed if you got a question wrong, giving you room for making mistakes. It took me a long time to set it up to generate the question and answer, and then check if the answer they give was correct. I was very proud of it, and honestly still am. I tested it a bunch of times and it all ran nice and smooth. I got a 70/100 on it. The middle schoolers told my teacher it was buggy and boring. I didn't much care about the boring part, but I knew that It couldn't have been buggy as I tested it thoroughly. I asked the teacher what was buggy. He said he never bothered to check himself and just took the kid's word on it. I asked him to test it so I could know, but he refused and said he wasn't going to bother. If any programming teachers are reading this, don't tell your students they made a mistake and refuse to tell them where or how. It's very discouraging.

I have a similar experience in my Computer Science class where for my end of year project I spent hours after school for a couple weeks writing the script and coding a choose your own adventure game with a lot of different endings and a clear overarching story. I even added three mini games to fit the judging criteria as a CYOA wouldn’t tick all the boxes and ended up getting 21/30. Even after asking for some clear feedback as I had had trouble uploading the project my teacher only gave general nonspecific comments. However in the end I had a strong sense of accomplishment from being able to code all my endings and games so it was still a fun experience.

Reminds me of a highschool digital arts class when I had a teacher who was just there for a check. He wanted to make me redo an assignment because I "got a similar result with the incorrect method" and after him cutting me off multiple times when I was trying to explain, I just took the mouse out of his hand and clicked through the layers to show him I infact did do it his way albeit i was addicted to making a bajillion layers for everything I did. Lazy bastard.

I know this is going to sound rather strange and unbelievable, but I actually voiced the cops in the co-op mode. I'm real good friends with Stig (Simon's voice actor as you had mentioned) to where I have written some art song material for him to sing before and also wrote the material for Virgil from Portal Stories: Mel to have him cast in it. Shortly before the release of Cry of Fear, Andreas contacted me (I believe on Stig's recommendation) that they were needing some quick voice work done for the cops in the co-op mode. I obliged, going far enough to actively punch myself in the stomach as hard as I could when voicing the pain sound lines you hear from the cops (ironically not unlike the lengths the voice actor for Doctor went through, which I will admit I had no idea of until now). For that, I got a Backers copy of the game for free, meaning that lovely SMG you couldn't use in the footage, so I guess you could say my work was worth in total $10? XD I'm not actively a Team Psykskallar member as I'm an American and they're all living within Sweden or Norway (Stig is Norwegian BTW, which is hysterical if you know the dynamic the two countries have considering a Norwegian voices a Swede character), but I'm featured under the credits for that mode with a different online handle. I know you probably won't read this, Pyro, but I at least wanted to get that out there, even if I could tell you weren't as much of a fan of the co-op mode.

I dunno if this has been picked up by many, but notice how going the easy way leads to a darker path for Simon. By ignoring Carcass, you conserve resources, making things easier due to more ammo and healing. And by keeping the pistol, you lose significantly less max health, allowing more survivability. It symbolizes Simon taking the "easy way" by not changing and confronting his issues but running away and bottling it all up, culminating in his suicide-he took "the easy way out." The easy way is not always the best way, especially with internal conflicts such as these. By choosing more strenuous paths (fighting your demons with Carcass and lowering your walls with the Doctor) things get more stressful in the immediate but will have a better payoff, like Simon's true road to recovery.

He's essentially coming to terms with her leaving, a burden task that doesn't really offer much other than removing a monster. Something that I have always thought of was that book Simon was supposed to be depicted in a way that was how Simon wanted to be. During his talk with Sophie, he mentioned how he feels stronger and better than he was before, he doesn't feel weak anymore. He is fighting his demons and problems and taking them head on. Also, book Simon was able to handle Sophies rejection in a pretty mature and solid way and only lost in when she jumped. However when we cut to the real Simon, he had a complete meltdown when confessing his love to Sophie and made a fool of himself in front of her. Book Simon is almost like a version of him that he wishes he was in real life and how he handled certain past situations.

Thank you for covering this hidden gem in the most brilliant way possible. The encounter with Sophie on the rooftops is quite interesting, this game depicts how a person with depression views the world, the monsters being all the negative thoughts and feelings and by killing them Simon gets over them, fights them, giving him hope, people with depression are often misunderstood, this is probably why Sophie is so clueless about the monsters in the city, because she doesn't view the world like a person with depression does (Simon) and doesn't understand him.

Despite not having played this game and just having watched this video, the story of this game resonates me with very very deeply. I feel like partly I am the same as Simon, we both have felt alone our whole lives, both of us ended up in a wheelchair after being hit by a car and both of us have had to learn how to cope with our depression instead of endlessly trying to get rid of it. I watched this video for the first time about a year ago now when my depression started, and every time I rewatch it it comes back to me meaning something more to me each time. The first time I watched it was before I ended up breaking both my legs walking in front of a car, watching this video after I've recovered from that and am walking again It feels surreal. I understand how Simon felt being chained to a wheelchair because I felt the same way. I've learned to not take for granted anything in my life anymore, I'm trying my best to enjoy the moment and forget the physical and mental scars I have now. I feel learning of this game has helped me cope with what I've been through because despite Simon being a fictional character in a videogame, he feels like a person I can go to and relate to. I think I'll always have this video (along with the other best free game video) always in my head reminding me that things do get better despite how long it may take

I mean the kid was honest about getting the book and I respect that, mostly because who the fuck was going to fact check a kid on whether or not he actually beat the game on Uber-hard mode and S-Ranked it. Also made it pretty clear, from how he worded it, that getting the book legit was fucking hard and, upon hearing Pyro talk about how hard it challenging it actually was, he wasn't wrong. Also anybody who actually got ass-mad with the kid about cheating in the *SINGLE-PLAYER* campaign is just retarded. I mean I'm of the opinion that cheating during a games campaign is fine, and that cheating in its multi-player is cringe, unless you're a games journalist playing one for a review. In which case they don't deserve to play games at all due to being worse at videogames than legitimately elderly people, which is saying a lot.

How about a fun fact for the forest section? You can skip collecting scissors entirely if you lead a lady with a knife to the rope and her cut it. You'll take some damage but you'll be able to progress. Speedrunners looking to skip this part can just use the enemies. There are a few instances of this as well, this being the most well known.

Fuck man, I cant imagine losing so much to a car all the best wishes. Please if you feel like suicide get some help talk to someone you trust. Don't slave away thinking on all the things you lost because you can achieve great things. Don't put your daily achievements down if getting out of bed is hard be happy you did it, if eating is hard congratulate yourself for eating. Don't look at people going to space and think that it's the norm. I have nothing but respect for you. Live your life to the fullest and never let the bad thoughts win.
