For those in USA they have the basic pyrography pens for about 26 or 27 usd. Works great. My walmart (I've seen these in several walmarts) has a pack of disks you can work on as well. You can get the tool and those disks for about 30 to 35 and technically have all you need for starters.

Greetings from Ireland. . I've started getting into pyrography, and yep I started on pine. I can draw quiet well freehand, and produced some nice stuff as a beginner . But pine off cuts from planks and I've planed them and sanded them but I now understand the grain pattern burns at varying depth of burning. You have explained things far better and straight to the point . So thank you for your information and look forward to learning more . Joe

I recently got into pyrography a few weeks ago. I got a super inexpensive wood burner from my local Walmart and some free wood from the local home depot scrap pile. The wood I got has a light of varying grain patterns so trying to do my projects that come out good has been a struggle. The soft parts of the wood vs the more harder parts. I can totally understand what you mean with the inconsistencies in the line work. It's been a good practice (to get me used to woods with different grain) and the pieces ive done on those wood pieces so far technically have only been practice but the people around me say they look fantastic even with the inconsistencies so that brings great joy. I'm also looking forward to being able to get better wood with less pronounced grain switches. Since I'm doing so good with the wood that is naturally difficult to work with I can't wait to see the results of the work I can do when it's easier wood. 😊

I print using a laser printer (the kind that uses toner instead of ink) and transfer the image using a normal fabric iron on high. A little pressure and heat and the image transfers perfectly. Gotta be a little careful of warping with thinner woods. Takes a little trial and error but it's my go to.

The only time I’ve had ‘none-wood’ smell from plywood is when I through some on the fire! With any wood you will get some some fumes/smoke. Try to keep your head out of the way or even use a very small fan. I’ve seen someone make one from a computer fan, but have felt the need myself.

Can you stain the wood after the burn?
@KingBespokeCreations4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Yes, obviously the surrounding wood will stain, but the burned sections will take stain depending how heavy the burn is. With a strong burn it almost ‘seals’ the wood. (Which is why ancient Japanese used it to preserve). It would give a lovely effect and make a lot of the burn really pop. Try it on a test piece and let me know what happens!

@KingBespokeCreations4 жыл бұрын
Any time my pen gets hot I check the connection with the tip. Sometimes the screw gets loose and the electric current stays in the pen. If the tip is glowing it needs turning down.
