The marching band question is not about stems, they are talking written musical notation parts that you need to distribute to each band member so they can perform the track. Its a new arrangement of the composition.

Gonna binge watch your stuff, I just got smacked down with a copyright strike from UMG for a cover song of Bryan Adams Summer of 69. I had a mechanical license and honestly thought I was 100% in the clear. Pokey little video with 200 views and they just asked no questions, no debate, and weren't even remotely interested in talking it out. I hear you on needing a license for video but how can a starter channel like mine justify spending any money or even time trying to obtain these additional licenses, when I got hit it felt like UMG were waging war against cover songs... but apparently it's only a handful of artists who have personally decided they want to crack down on it. Personally, I feel like that shouldn't be allowed... something should be legal or not legal... having this discretion leaves us all in total limbo and confusion. I even heard an example where Bryan Adams personally reached out to a channel and whitelisted them, whilst UMG continued to swing and strike others. It really does make you not want to bother, which is sad because cover songs have been hugely popular since forever.

That’s an interesting question, including for example extreme lyric swapping like Weird AL comedy renditions of songs.

@@lamonteasterjr you would need permission. you are correct, the kind of changes your describing is not parody. Parody is its own animal. if you just apply for your mechanical licence as normal you will see if it gets rejected. You certainly would not be able to register publishing royalties of your own changes. If you give the usual 100% publishing to the original artists as a normal cover, the artist is usually fine with it, but it changes artist to artist and country to country not all copyright law is the same bare in mind. in UK and US you will need the original composers permission for the changes.

How much is volume of catalog, more or less of 1000 track??

its not a fixed number. FYI very few artists reach 1000 tracks in their career. For example Dolly Parton is one of the most prolific artists that ever lived and she has credits on over 3000 songs, but she is an massive exception. Usually its a few hundred. When Michael Jackson bought the rights to all The Beatles songs he bought 250 songs. He paid 47 million. Like any asset the cost and amount will be different based on it's perceived future value.
