Hi Dennis. I have always fancied the idea of owning a Patek Ellipse just like President Trump. But when it comes to nice dress watches, the VC Malte would also be something a bit different.

I just cannot get into the Ellipse. The oval shape never clicks for me. I've looked at a number across the years. I'm not alone on that, which can be great if you want one as they tend to take a huge hit on the used market versus other Patek models.

I absolutely love the Ellipse and its super underrated for a PP. John Reardon has made a living finding and selling Ellipses at Collectability, and I always like watching his videos because he finds some of the absolute best and most obscure Pateks ever made. I hope you get one!

I'm glad I asked, that Vacheron looks very interesting. I'm a fan of the brand for some reason, if I was in that league, I'd much prefer a 222 or 1921 to an AP or most Pateks. However, I will have to make do with my Baltany 1921 homage which is a very nice watch with a Miyota 9039.

I have seen the Baltany (in photos) and it looks like they did a good job getting the spirit of that watch style.

Not to join your snobbery but my issue with the Gold PVD is the look and feel of fake gold on that price watch. I do like the whimsical moon and the watch is very nicely proportioned. However, if it were gold, then I'd prob go with a different brand. Catch 22 for them. I like the big date but partially because it is rarer than other date complications. VC Malt is fantastic looking but would need to see on wrist!

I wanted to try a Malte on when I was in Dallas but they told me only select locations (them not being one of them) get those currently. However, on paper the sizing seems good. Might be a bit long for the shape but I think it was around 47mm lug-to-lug so no overhang risk. I like Big Date as a function. I think the more deliberate, and complicated, nature appeals to me over a traditional date disc. Plus, it is easy to read without attaching magnification to the sapphire. Fake gold would only work with me on an ultra-cheap watch where you know it is fake. Like Casio's approach.

At my age of 76 a big date is helpful. Have a lower priced watch with PVD rose gold and it is now wearing off.

Sorry to hear about the PVD. I've seen it suggested there are some differing approaches. The Moser I mentioned actually uses DLC, which is a subset of PVD and its use of carbon makes it a lot more durable than other PVD formats using differing metals. I tend to find Big Dates a very attractive complication, and yes, they are so much easier to read!

cyclops also screams Rolex, which is intended by the company given its distinctive look (same for the jubilee bracelet, polished center link oyster bracelet, etc.). Part of the brand power of Rolex.

Indeed, though they have made exceptions (I believe the current Sea-Dwellers have the cyclops but I think it was the prior model that did not). I've seen a lot of Seikos with the cyclops as well but that's more for particular lines as they have a lot more style variety across their SKUs.

Thanks Dennis! I am curious, a tonneau shaped Breguet, I cannot for the life of me think of what reference that is. The Tradition is my attainable grail but I know how you feel about semi-skeletonized watches however now I am wondering what this other Breguet is.

They have done them in the Heritage line. The 5480 is my favorite but the sizing can range quite a bit I assume depending on the year.
