@6:50: Hi Dr. Greger. What do we do with Amla in India? There are 2 types, the larger - tart, bitter fruit and the smaller - sour fruit. The smaller sour fruit can be eaten raw, but usually eaten with salt and chilli powder. Used to be a favourite in our school days. The larger sized Amla which you are familiar with - is typically made into pickles or sugared-candy. It can be eaten raw but just drink some water - it will taste sweet. I slice or shred fresh Amla berries and mix it into my regular food - so that tart taste is masked. Give raw fresh Amla with water a try. You'll like it

WOW, now I see why all the "oats" comments. Clearly the question is about oatmeal. And eating uncooked oatmeal has been a GREAT way to start most of my days over the last few years. I got it from Esselstyn of course. I'm a bit shocked that 'ol Mikey here is ignorant of such a wonderful breakfast (or snack) option. I was eating cooked oatmeal before and adding enough fruit to make it sweet enough for my tastes (after kicking sugar). I couln't eat a whole cup cooked. Now I eat a full cup, plus a "handful" of 2-5 or more fruits (like banana, blueberries, strawberries any berries, kiwi, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, grapes, raisins, apple, pear, pomegranite, mango, etc.), plus some chopped greens, nuts/seeds as I have on hand, flaxmeal, and a plethora of spices as: turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, allspice, clove (all fresh ground but the turmeric-and I have used fresh turmeric); then a splash or two of apple cider vinegar over the whol mess. It's easy, fast (no cooking, just chopping, and easily prepared ahead of time). It's dynamic to whatever is on hand. Anything but the oatmeal can be omitted or substituted as desired or necessary. This meal, with the full cup of "raw" oatmeal is the most satisfying breakfast I've ever eaten, and it lasts all the way to lunch every day I eat it. I have learned a lot from Dr. Greger here, and continue to do so, but must say that Essie (Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn) was the inspiration for the oatmeal breakfast. If you've read this far and don't know about his (Dr. E's) daughter and wife's cooking channel on YT, you should see it. That's exactly where I learned many of the meals I make now. They're a hoot and just put out a long video of favorites. Their cranberry salsa is a big hit too, I make it a few times each year. "Raw" oatmeal is increadibly filling and easy to mix with anything. One of my "ain't got time for a snack, but I NEED a snack right" tricks is a handful of oatmeal in one cheek, a handful of raisins into the other. Chew slowly and let them mix---so much like an oatmeal cookie it's amazing, and satiates. Still a bit surprised that this "raw oatmeal" thing is completely unknown by MG. Anyway, maybe he learns of it properly some time. I've been WFPB 10 years in March. NF.O was a pivotal point for me.

How about nutmeg? Is that a spice you should be careful about overeating? Just like tarragon that Dr mentioned? I recall hearing that one can eat too much nutmeg, especially true for small children?

we use amla in India in a variety of ways. amla pickle is delicious! idk abt frozen amla but it's definitely not gross. it's sour at first but has a very sweet aftertaste! I love it n miss it soo much! maybe an acquired taste
@mjs28s3 күн бұрын
@20:05 Uncooked oats, "gross"?!? Are you high right now, Dr Greger? Overnight oats? Make some with soymilk, wild blueberries, golden raisins, ceylon cinnamon. Next morning, add a splash more soy milk and microwave for 30 to 45 seconds and welcome to the land of delicious.

@@rl5870 The "dryness" makes it easier to consume enough to get me through until lunch without any hunger. Most of the fruit and always the greens are fresh and that greatly offsets the "dryness". Oh, I should make some "oat milk" and try that for a wet mix.
@PeebeesPet3 күн бұрын
I don't see truth in the claim about trail mix and gaining weight. I eat a mixture of nuts, seeds, dried fruit everyday for lunch. I've lost weight since. If I don't exercise enough, I end up eating less naturally. My body seems to have adapted to the caloric load and is very effective at consuming the right amount. I never desire to eat anymore than I actually need. Keep in mind that it is neither roasted or salted.
@adribones3 күн бұрын
Trail mix that includes nuts seeds dried fruit is generally considered a higher calorie food, but including it at maintenance calories or in a deficit won’t result in weight gain. Easy.

Oats and oatmeal are different (other comments). I haven't cooked ANY oatmeal since Dr. Esselstyn enlightened me. I make a big mix with fruit, greens, and spices--knocks out half a daily dozen in one bowl and give me more nutrition first thing than most folks get all day long. Not more calories, but more nutrition.
