27:43 The Solution to the Tomato Paradox and the Ramifications a Response to the Pineapple on Pizza Paradox By oh yea "Tomatoes and other vegetables are ingredients that fit within the parameters of the culinary dish that is a pizza." This statement is the heart of the Pineapple on Pizza Paradox (PoP Paradox). The exclusivity it implies is what has sparked this fiery debate. I am here not to pose a solution, but to inspire critical thinking in the reader of this response. Before I continue, I feel it is only fair for me to address any biases I may hold: I believe pineapple can be put on pizza. If you had asked me several years ago, I would say pineapple improves pizza. I was then introduced to the titular Tomato Paradox. This has shaken my confidence in this solution to the PoP Paradox, but I still hold my position. The Tomato Paradox is touched upon in Exclusivist Solution to the PoP Paradox. This Solution states, "Pineapple does not qualify as a pizza topping because it is not a fruit." This implies that all fruits are incapable of passing through pizzahood. If any are used as toppings, what you have is no longer a pizza. The Tomato Paradox arises when the Inclusivist Solution proponents draw attention to a supposed fallacy in the Exclusivist Solution. "If fruits are not qualified as pizza toppings, then why are tomatoes allowed in the sauce and as a topping despite their status of being a fruit?" This naturally leads to an argument of the nature of a tomato. "Is it a fruit or is it a vegetable?" This is the Tomato Paradox. This is also a false dichotomy. When dealing with labelling things, especially natural entities, it is human nature to use all-encompassing labels for a plethora of specific things. This is what is encountered in the Tomato Paradox. It is solved simply by addressing it: "vegetable" is a culinary term, while "fruit" is both a scientific and culinary term. Although a vegetable is usually defined as any part of a plant that is not the fruit, this distinction falls apart when tomatoes are considered a vegetable. Mushrooms, another classic vegetable, aren't even plants to begin with. This means that a vegetable has no defining trait or some innate vegetable essence that makes it as such. A vegetable is entirely dependent upon whether it is prescribed the "vegetable" label or not. Credit to @ZicV who has already pointed this out. By this metric, any vegetable is allowed on pizza. This includes typical toppings like onions, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes while leaving the door open in a seemingly unaccounted fashion. Vegetables also include beans, potatoes, and pumpkins. Are these allowed on pizza? Flowers and even bark are contained within the strictest definition of a vegetable. Are these allowed on pizza? Furthermore, if tomatoes are both fruits and vegetables, what's stopping us from labelling pineapples as both and thus circumventing this whole dilemma? The reason why certain edible things labelled as vegetables were allowed on pizza in the first place was because the taste good. Obviously, Inclusivists agree that pineapple on pizza does taste good so it should rightfully be an option as a topping. The fact that there is a dilemma to begin with proves that this side makes up a sizable portion. Should vegetarians argue that meat also doesn't belong on pizza? Why are we taking only a select portion of the populace's consideration on what dictates a worthy topping? Should we not use the same methodology of the founders of the pizza? Should we not proclaim any topping that a notable portion of pizza indulgers appreciate is a real topping? This strict adherence to an exceedingly aged recipe only enforces a Eurocentric perspective on recipe design. This is rule is clearly only followed when the ingredient in question appeals to the stereotypical Western European palate: spicy jalapenos are fine while pineapples are sanctioned with social punishment. Despite all of this, there is still sound logic behind the Exclusivist Solution. Admittedly, the proposed standard of a pizza topping is just that: a proposal. It holds no water, it has no objective meaning, and in the end it's just a suggestion. However, the role of pizza as a food is not in a vacuum. Pizza plays an important role in Italian and Northern Mediterranean cultures. This is especially true for immigrants from these areas, as they lack access to a lot of the interpersonal aspects of their culture. Yes, there's more than enough protection for European cultures yet the standard set by holding the classic or even traditionally accepted pizza ingredients to a higher regard is worthy of consideration. Other cultures recipes should also be respected in this manner, especially in heterogeneous countries such as Canada and the USA. To forget or ignore the efforts of a people to create a dish they enjoy with what they are afforded can be arrogant and disrespectful to that people. To conclude, I still find the Inclusivist argument to be more compelling (you can probably tell by the length of the related paragraph), but I do think there stands a middle ground. To the Exclusivists, I applaud you for giving life to a culture even if it is not your own (and for reading this far), but maybe chill out a bit. People have different palates and most individuals' aren't even consistent throughout their lives. What you're seeing with pineapple becoming a staple is the food culture evolving live, and I personally think that's pretty cool. To the Inclusivists, I applaud you for experimenting with new ways to enjoy the culinary world, but be humble. What you're doing is weird, which is one of the very driving forces behind it. While you're on this adventure though, don't dismiss the hard work and dedication put behind the recipes that already exist. They exist for a reason, and I personally think that's also pretty cool. P.S. I love watching your videos, Olivia. I have ADHD (one of my symptoms is hyperfixation as you may notice) and it's hard for me to articulate and/or expand upon abstract ideas like how you do. I appreciate your insight as it helps give me the words for those ideas and grows the seeds of thought I hadn't noticed were there. I hope you're doing well and I can't wait for the next video. Also fuck whoever says you're not pretty.

Zeno's paradoxes are logical paradoxes, you can go a certain distance between two points, even though that distance is infinitely divisible, so even though you can go that distance, how can you go a distance that is infinitely indivisible? If before the end of the distance, there is always one more point, then it should be impossible to reach that end, hence the paradox. You can apply the same logical problem to time, or matter, as these, too, appear to be infinitely divisible.

Thank you for bringing up your struggle of accepting your cultural background. As someone from a South Asian background and immigrated to Canada 10+ years ago, I related so much to trying to fit in with Canadian kids and trying my best not to look/sound/act like a f.o.b. Kids were ruthless so any chance you did anything differently, you were just looked at weirdly or made fun of. I definitely see it getting better for students at the college/university level, but sometimes the same ignorant reservations and pre-conceived notions still remain in me even towards f.o.b students from my own cultural background.

I have to say I feel like the more I watch your videos, the more I feel like we have so much in common. Not necessarily on a concrete level (our circumstances/backgrounds are probably fairly different), but more so in terms of how we think and what types of emotional experiences we've had (e.g. having a conservative phase following being very liberal, difficulties with self-image & friendships, devotion to parasocial relationships, etc.). I think we have very similar interests (philosophy, social issues & social phenomenons), and ways of looking at things/thoughts (you seem to have a more abstract & very balanced/ponderous way of thinking & you seem to like to go very deep into each topic you cover). Anyhow, I thought the coincidences were interesting, so I thought I'd mention it, because it's sometimes difficult to find people, who have a similar outlook on life as I do. All the best to you! I think you've come a long way. And if you ever feel insecure about your content, just remember that there are people that really connect with your style of delivery in a unique way, and that's ultimately all that matters!

Hey Olivia, I can relate to the identity struggle you felt earlier in your life. I myself went to life affirming courses with my mother as a tag along. And I learned so much, it really taught me to embrace my own flaws, personality and identity. Plus I am a pretty dark black person and I always loved the fact that I was so dark, because it really let me know how people were feeling about me right away. I knew where I stood when I walked into a room, if it was full of racially preducide people, I knew I had to just ignore them to forge ahead. Just my 2cent to the discussion fo racial and cultural idenity in modern society.

hey olivia! i don't know if you know this, but if you wanted the timestamps in the description to show up as chapters (aka have the video seperated) then you should start with a 0:00 first! hope this helps lol

Still learning to embrace my culture and not be embarassed by it. I was born in brazil but moved out of there at a very young age, and i used to feel very uncomfortable especially when i watch something in portuguese, like, whenever i would watch something i would think that it was a copy of the "cool version" i had already watched in english. I dont think this started because of anyone saying that portuguese is not cool, but probably because i dont expose myself to my own culture a lot and whenever i am exposed to it, it feels foreign, and makes me uncomfortable cause i was supposed to relate to that, but i dont. Either way, im still healing

Im brazillian and pretty much never left here, but since i was alphabetized in both english and portuguese, i ended up having the same feelings as you. I don't really care about anything in portuguese anymore, the culture is not for me.

I relate to the self-hatred part. I'm extremely existential and don't value anything about me and see myself as useless to myself and those around me. Those conclusions probably aren't true, as there's people like my mom who claim they couldn't live without me, but I can never take it to heart. It doesn't help that I can't relate to my fellow 13 year olds.
