This 70 year old grandmother knows exactly what she is talking about,I to am a grandmother & one finds out by now (at the grandmother stage) that there is much more life behind us that there is in front of us 😊 I know this sounds really negative but it isn’t meant to be at all. I look back and my heart really breaks at the reality of life yesterday (Nov.13) was the first year anniversary of my only beautiful daughter she was perfectly healthy as far as anyone knew so it was such a shock for which I have not & will never recover. She was my everything so you can see Kylie always remember life is short

To the young woman who wrote about her first year in Italy, making friends is difficult any where. I've lived in a few cities in the U.S. and as I've gotten older, find it much harder. You are new to that location and people already have their social networks and very busy lives so it can be hard to feel like you fit in. I've had great interactions with people but they are more on the surface. I learned how to entertain myself and be happy alone although I long for those friendships that are more intimate. It isn't you....their dance card is full and they just don't have the space for more which is understandable. I wish I had the time/energy after a busy work week to put the energy in to building friendships but I don't any more. Sad as it is, making new friends takes a lot of time and work unless you happen to meet someone who has the same situation you are in - new in town and an open dance card. You just need one friend to make it work! Kylie's suggestions are spot on and I feel getting out and being in a place you are around people is what will help. I've worked at home 7 years and have found my social connections dwindled once that happened. You have to be around people to have a chance of connecting. It is effort but if you really want to stay, stick with it!

This was a wonderful way of getting to know you better. This year I turned 56 and all these years I have survived but not lived. I have been married, divorced, raised 3 beautiful children on my own, and now spend time teaching English online and living with a wonderful partner. But, there is still the "what if". I was recently struck with the phrase "a life without regret" and I am realizing that I need to live. In all my years and in all the places I have lived in the U.S. nowhere has ever really felt like home. My family comes from a little village in the Abruzzo region of Italy and I have always wanted to return there. I am truly hoping that when I get there my heart will find a home. Because of your inspiration I am not afraid to face challenges. Thank you and bless you!

Suzanne, your comments really speak to me. I, too, am 56. While in the depths of depression in 2019 (absolutely hating my job and being single), I remembered Annie Dillard's wise words, "How you live your life is, after all, how you live your days." And that's when I started planning my first trip to Italy. What's happened since then is nothing short of miraculous: spending 4 months in Italy during Covid, and now, just recently, purchasing a home in Sicily. I guess this is all to say, Sister, I hear you. Go visit Abruzzo! Kylie is wise beyond her years and an inspiration to us all. Here's to creating the life you dream of! 🌞💖

@@suzyblake2007 Not crazy at all! In fact, I think it is this yearning for something more, something beyond our present experience, this thing that speaks in whispers and tugs at our soul - this, I think, is responsible for all great things in the world, all that is good and beautiful. We just need to answer the call! Best wishes on your journey 🧡

Humanity has been brainwashed for centuries to live in survival mode whereas our Inner Self longs for and knows deep down that it deserves a life filled with rich and wonderful experiences. I'm in my 60s and have done so many things I've dreamed of doing but each time have had to quit before true fulfillment and success could be achieved because of lack of money. That said, I am so grateful that I had the courage to try even if I could barely afford it. I would always ask myself " If I were on my deathbed, how would I feel if I never tried this dream or that dream?" Regret is a terrible thing. Follow your dreams even if you can't fully achieve them. You never know where that path will lead you next. Life was meant to be lived and enjoyed, not "survived".

Your comment about living out of your depth really touched on how I feel. My husband and I moved from the US to Portugal in 2019. We travel a great deal (We are vanlifers with two big dogs!) We have met so many wonderful people and I am often left in awe of the conversations I have with Europeans, I feel my US education left me wanting. I'm impressed with how women of all ages travel alone here, the love of life, the enjoyment of conversation and food. We all need to step outside of our comfort zone to really find ourselves. Not having the means or being the "right" age should not being an excuse. Wherever you are, open your windows, listen to new music, drink wine, grow flowers and your world will open up! Thank you for your inspiration and beautiful videos! Much love to you!

Good morning Kylie, your story and life this far is quite the adventure on every level. Your children will be so proud of their mother and her achievements and even her trials and tribulations. I honestly admire your bravery and courage in setting out on such a journey. I missed out at some point my quest to continue to find my happy home. I made a choice which emotionally was right but geographically I'm always unsettled. I'm losing time with always procrastinating. I'm 60 years old and after watching this I told my husband "right, we need to start on that adventure we always leave for next year"! I'm greek born in Canada and married to a British-spaniard for 26 years. He is the love of my life and for that I'm so grateful that I found. I almost lost him to 'C' (I hate even saying it) but I didn't!!! Now we need to do what we put on hold!! Love everything about you Kylie, you brought that fire in me again, reminded me of the dreams I put away! Florence is one of those magical places (amongst others) we talked about! Thank you for your videos and being that special woman that you are! ❤

Fantastic video Kylie!! ❤️ A cinematic masterpiece, with great insight and helpful advice. I'm not sure why I was surprised that your favourite films are also some of mine, I guess I thought our tastes might be a little different. You recommended a Penelope Green book, "When in Rome", which I haven't read yet, but her book, "See Naples and Die" helped me dream of one day seeing Naples, during an incredibly difficult time of my life, so I will endeavor to be inspired by her once again! Due to COVID, I still haven't seen Naples, but I'm working on it 😊

The thing about moving to Italy… I am Italian, born abroad & I lived in Florence for 15 years before giving up to move elsewhere. I recently returned to live in Italy after a 22 year hiatus to find NOTHING HAS CHANGED, in fact it’s worse as young Italians are experiencing all the problems I had between 1985-2000! Don’t get me wrong, I ❤ Italy with all my heart, it’s a country & culture like no other. However moving here & making it are beyond challenging unless you already have the means (lots of $$$€€€) to make opportunities for yourself. By all means give it a try, I am not saying the experience of moving to Italy will not be beneficial, even if you cannot make a go of it. What I am saying is, do it with your eyes wide open, be aware & be prudent. Be strong. Here’s my list of things to be aware of before you take the plunge & try making anywhere in Italy your home. 1) If you already have citizenship or are able to apply because you are a descendant of an italian who never gave up their citizenship after leaving Italy, it makes life somewhat easier. Getting citizenship is not a fast nor easy process. Check out your local Italian Consulate website for details. 2) It’s a given, but if you have plenty of money at hand BEFORE you move here, you will be ok…at least for a while. 3) If you know proper Italian & not a dialect your relatives spoke when they left to immigrate overseas, you will be ok. If you do not speak Italian, learn at least to conversational level before coming here, it will help you immensely. 4) If you are happy working long hours & weekends for max €1500/month (this is considered an average wage in 2022), if you manage to find a job, that is … you’ll survive. 5) If you are happy working without your boss paying contributions towards your retirement/national insurance, you MIGHT find a job. In other words working “a nero” illegally is normal practice for most people in Italy! 6) You won’t find anywhere to rent without references from people who are friends of the homeowner. 7) If you find a home to rent, to avoid paying taxes on the rent received, your landlord will not let you register at the town hall “comune” to get “residenza” & 9) without registering as resident in your comune & receiving an ID card & CODICE FISCALE you cannot do anything, from signing up for health services to buying your own car etc. 10) Also without “residenza” your utility bills will be more expensive because the home you are renting is registered as the homeowner’s 2nd (or 3rd+++) home & extra taxes are added to the utility bills to 2nd homes, but you ‘don’t exist’ at that house so you could pay as much as 30% more for electricity etc. 11) Not all Italians are as friendly as you may think; it took me 15 years in Florence & then a move overseas to be sought out by the people I worked for/with. When I lived in Florence, it was made abundantly clear that I was not & never really would be part of their “giro” (circle) even after several years together. I personally found Southern Italians tend to more accepting of foreigners compared to Northerners, but maybe that is because they have taken the brunt of racist remarks for decades for moving to the north to work in factories & take on less palatable jobs. Anyhow, if you are a single female it is always harder because Italy can be pretty misogynistic, even today ladies making it on their own can be unfairly judged, so be prepared for “a reputation” you don’t deserve from a segment of the population. Back in the 80s I was even propositioned for sex more than a few times during interviews for secretarial work/teaching English/nanny job, it was that bad. Hopefully that has improved at least. 12) As Kylie said, if you are prepared to work hard & even for free, you might get a modicum of acceptance where you work, most likely from your peers, not your boss though. 13) If you are planning to return to your roots & move to anywhere SOUTH OF ROME be prepared to find a much less developed part of the country. Yes, housing & cost of living is way cheaper than in the north, you’ll have universal healthcare for all, but AT THE COST OF LESS SERVICES & further to travel for necessities like doctors, veterinarians & well equipped hospitals. Most Southerners have to travel to Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome etc when they need specialist health care. Also, if you don’t have relatives/friends to help you in those cities it can be very expensive. Most importantly I need to tell you that many Italian friends who work their asses off are barely making it & they even live in Tuscany, in the provinces of Florence & Pisa. One friend is a seasoned accountant & makes only €1,300/month full time after 30 years at the company. Why didn’t she go elsewhere? Because work in Italy has been hard to find for decades & nobody locally offered better! Things are pretty dire to be honest as even my friends’ grown up kids can’t find work legally nor where they are paid fully or on time for the hours they work. Some are getting paid months late, if at all. Some aren’t getting paid at all because they are still considered an “apprentice secretary” after 5 years working at the company. They would move for work if they could, but after Covid even jobs overseas are scarce, plus they don’t have the skills or funds to go anywhere else & start afresh. So they continue to work for free in the hopes the boss will eventually employ them properly or “a nero.” Kylie has landed on her feet & I am so very happy for her, but her story is exceptional, she is truly a 1 in a million case. Moving to Italy isn’t anywhere near the fable she portrays in her excellent vlog, in fact even working super hard & doing everything right can easily get you absolutely nowhere… even for Italians born & bred, even for me a multilingual polyglot, who had more guts & determination than the average kid leaving home to make it on her own.

This was great & eye-opening. Kylie is an artist with her vlogs - they aren't realistic - I joked, hope it was taken that way - with her very beautiful 'waiting for you' vid - yeah: the reality of an infant is very different: you aren't going to be thinking about the lavender scented clothes or whatever.......Kylie has my full permission to be a new mother - it's not easy: & it's okay She & Guido gone & done it & made a new human: that's messy stuff. Sometimes I think Kylie might be contributing to the SM stuff - unrealistic, making people think they lack - but, maybe not - I'd love for her to get more realistic.....but, that's her artistry & her level of being comfortable with sharing behind the scenes stuff - that's her druthers & her right: it's her work...... Thanks for this comment - it's epic!

before you move anywhere - do this - go to the place you think you want to live, save up so you have enough money to cover expenses for three months. Rent a house in the district you think you want to live. Go when they have their worst season (winter) and have a major holiday in the 3 month timeframe so that you can't go home for a holiday. If after 3 months of living there, you still love it, move there. Reason being, if you can survive their worst climate and love it, live with the people in the area you want to live and love it, go a big holiday without your family and you are miles away and see how a phone call or internet is your only family connection and the rest of your family is living without you and you still love it - then and only then, start to think about moving there. Be careful what you wish for without putting a lot of pros and cons into it and save yourself a lot of troubles...

Really good advice Kylie. The reality vs the desire to experience a new world. Many times I have been in these situations. Even moving to Tasmania 20 years ago tested me to the hilt. I have watched so many give up on living here from mainland Australia - for the same reasons you note for Italy. I relate to your Uni exp. I went back to study in 2016 at Uni and I was shocked that I learnt so little as a mature student, it made me truly worried for the younger students I was studying with...looking to start life. It was a plod of basic nothing - mixed with ideology of no benefit. The one thing I took away from graduation was...at least I know what is being taught now, and how this is filtering into society in general. I would be clueless if not for that exposure. Always enjoy your vlogs - they are full of inspiration, beauty and commonsense. You have always worked hard and taken risks. Manifested your desires and not remained still on any success. FANTASTIC...get writing a book!

Sitting here with my head phones watching this and I turned to my husband and said, let’s sell the house and move to Europe. We are 65. Seriously, we travel around the United States but I feel there is so much more amd we have both been to Europe on numerous occasions. It’s all downhill from here, this is the time for us to go and explore. Ok he is having double knee surgery in a month but after he is healed…we will go.

I even studied film studies as a minor at university! Your videos certainly inspire me though ❤️ I've been following you for years now and I love seeing your life and storytelling techniques progress 😄

Thank you for this lovely Q&A Kylie. I related to so much about making friends. I have lived in the south of France for over 2 years now and still have trouble making friends and the friends that I do have are expats… which means they’ll eventually leave. Even though there are some downfalls of living abroad the beauty and way of living outweighs the bad… I must admit I think it’s beautiful that the French have these friendships since they were children. I hope to be as well traveled as you one day, you are a big inspiration to me❤

It was interesting to hear about your journey all at once to the first question. What a whirlwind! The experiences you've had, both good and bad, have brought you to where you are with Guido, the farm and your beautiful baby boy. I hope your little one starts feeling better soon. It's tough when they're newborns, as they don't digest things well yet. I'm looking forward to Q&A part 2, when you're up to it. Thanks, Kylie!

The "Before' series was a gift. After watching all 3, spanning all those years, personally, I loved Part 2 the best. It's becos they were apart for that long, and Fate? Brought them back. True love, is hard, and many times, it may never come. As we grow older, we lose more of the people, whom we hope otherwise.

I’ve recently started watching your vlogs, coming across them randomly. I wish I’d found them during the height of prolonged lockdowns in Australia, not just for me to remind me of my dreams past and present, but for my frustrated cooped up teenagers. ..you’re a breath of fresh air in your positivity and proactive approach & lifestyle. Your experiences resonate with me, yet are also so different that it’s exciting to see your journey, challenges and joys, in aspiring to follow dreams. Your advice at the end could also apply to when I moved to Japan, or to a lesser extent even London in finding your way & making deeper friendships within a new country. Congratulations on the birth of your baby!!.. he’s a lucky boy having you both as his parents! ..& Thank you for finding time to vlog when you have a small baby! You deserve all the happiness & contentment that you have created in your beautiful life!

Kylie, You do not speak about retired people. There are many in Italy. I am older than most people I have met here. I moved to Montenegro 2019 more than 4 years ago. I came for the first time in 2018 stayed for 21/2 months. I am 79 now. I still love it here and very happy that I found a small country that speaks English as I do not speak the language. I am a very social person. I meet and speak to people everywhere. My best friend is a Dr. I am still learning about the culture. I even have a Montenegro Driver's Lic. Do not know if I will purchase a car. My friends from the States have visited me. Even one of my friends gave me POA to purchase her apartment when I helped her find her apartment working with my Realtor. My career in the States is and was RE. I still manager my Rental. Anything can be accomplished if you nevrer give up and have an alternative plan. I look at everything in life as a challenge.....enjoy your baby....I did and still enjoying my grandchildren and hopefully great grandchildren......😀😉

Love the Q&A with all of your lovely photographs and video. Your photography skills are so special that it really adds to the video so much. Thanks for sharing so much information on how to start in a foreign country. This will help so many young people move around and for each to get to know others, so that surely, hopefully, in my lifetime we can see an end to wars and only know peace. That would be my prayer. Blessings to your adorable family!

My (late) husband managed Jane Rutter for a brief time. Unrelenting rain in Melbourne. My sister will be arriving from London soon & staying with me, so I'm getting very excited! I haven't seen her since pre-COVID. So hopefully the inclement weather (due to La Niña) will dissipate. We will have fun as we did when she lived here, many moons ago. We'll hit the restaurants (inc. your favourites), galleries, cinema (inc. The Astor, Cinématèque), music venues (see my friends' band perform). Thankfully our Nick Cave tickets are indoors at The Palais Theatre. My son is also attending the Hanging Rock concert. Atmospheric location...however, who knows what the weather will be like? Btw, I hope your friend Brian is happy & healthy. Love to you and your lovely family. 👱‍♀️❤
