I always prefer when the sponsorship has no relation to the type of channel. Book videos x cereal, beauty videos x jewelry. This way, I don't have to think about the creator's integrity. Because if a beauty creator makes a sponsored video for a makeup brand, I'm going to keep in mind that they'll probably either be contractually obligated to speak positively about the brand for a while, or simply not want to hurt their chance to make another sponsored video in the future. And that makes me question their honesty whenever that brand is concerned.

I’m really interested in hearing what people have to say about that topic! I can totally see why people feel this way. You also don’t see the behind the scenes (do I accept every collabs or am I picky? Do I even try the products before? Etc) and some things you can see how it looks (like mascara) but sometimes not (skincare) so I totally get it

As a person who have learned a second language almost by myself (my first language is spanish) my best advise, added to those you have shared, is GIVE YOURSELF TIME. Don't pretend to internalize an entire language in a previously determined period of time because in highly probable you will be frustrated. Step by step. Set goals and go for them, and be prepared to change them! For those who could be interested in my process: I begin with songs. Everytime I liked an english song I used to search the lyrics and its translation. Doing that I've learned A LOT of vocabulary and grammar structures. After that I focused on tv shows (one specific tv show to get used to the voices and the way that people talks) and social media. At first I couldn't understand ANYTHING without subtitles, and in social media I barely understand two or three words in each sentence. But if you are focused and every day you read a little, it works, I promise. Once I noticed I could understand an 80% without subtitles or searching translations, I stop using the subtitles at all. It forced me to understand. And here I am, working in english every day, reading books in english (it took me 8 or 9 years to be able to read a whole english book, it wasn't easy, but each one of us has a particular time, maybe you could achive this way faster) and watching Emily's videos. Love and strength to everyone who have read this!

What helped me out of a reading slump was to reread a seried I really loved when I was younger (Percy Jackson 😂). It was lightweight, I knew I liked it, and it was quickly finished (took me 2 weeks for all 5 books). Then I continued with another „childhood favorite“ (Eragon 😂). Read these four chunky books in like 3 weeks. After that, I got „used“ to the routine of reading again and I could pick new books

Could you elaborate on what you mean by ‘problematic authors’, please? I find I don’t know much about the authors before choosing a book to read and base my selections on the books themselves and their appeal. If a book is problematic to me (racist, misogynistic, etc.) I will usually not read more books by that author, but I don’t think I have ever ‘banned’ an author prior to having read some of their work

Please don't stress yourself about it tho, take your time, I'll be happy whenever you're ready :D Tho I must say my ... taste? in beauty channels has changed quite a bit. I only buy cruelty-free makeup now (the only brand I actually miss is Maybelline but even that is okay) and I enjoy project panning content way more than I ever thought I would :D Do you have plans already on what kind of content you are planning to do? I'm sorry that people let you down when you were in a bad place. I know how it feels, it sucks but you're doing the absolute right thing by not letting them into your life again. Kinda disgusting what people do for a little bit of "fame" and attention.... So I completely get why you don't involve other people. Always loved it when you showed us cats and squirrels tho :D Hm for learning a different language I can also recommend to read children's books in that language! They use easier words but you can still learn quite a lot (esp grammar) :D I feel weird about sponsorships ngl. But I can also see the necessity of it in terms of making money. But yeah, I also prefer when people take sponsorships of things they actually like and used and tried more often preferebly even before they got a sponsorship. And not only that sometimes products don't look good on sponsored people, sometimes you just feel and can read in their face that they're talking more positively about it than they're actually feeling. Oh and I like your bubble. It's cozy here. Greetings to snowglobe Emily! Thanks for the video, I hope your rennovations are goin well! 💕

I know that people do it just because they want to make a little money including for what they are using to make videos, like you said. But I just get a weird vibe from it. In my opinion, sponsorship and recommending products in the beauty community comes with a higher risk than in the booktube. If the book its bad the community might question your taste, but imagine if a beauty product it's bad and causes skin issues? I remember a local case of a woman selling fake products and some clients ended up with burns.
@BookswithEmilyFox2 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh I wouldn't recommend fake products for sure (although my face is apparently used a lot on resellers (mostly for lipsticks lol)). I think beauty is complex because people need to accept that you can't find a "new all time favorite X" every day. But even if a certain foundation let's say isn't my all time favorite (or even doesn't especially work for my skin), I can still recommend it for other people (like dry vs oily skin), you know? It's always tricky because just because a product works great on me, doesn't mean it will on you.
@mayralex182 жыл бұрын
@@BookswithEmilyFox for sure, there's also the added layer of scammy practices by the companies that want to sell you miracle products or products with all these qualities like rejuvenating stuff for more money. I've worked with stem cells and let me tell you, those assholes are HARD to keep alive even on optimum conditions; they would never survive on creams or shampoos and therefore would not work, the dead cells might be there so the company its not lying but there's no effect, you are just wasting your money.

I'm just getting into sci-fi, mostly because of your channel. I'm curious if you have any recommendations for sci-fi with good queer rep? ( I've already read/own all Becky Chambers, so that might complicate things a bit haha)

She's definitely my go-to but a quick list to look into: This is how you lose the time war (wlw), light from uncommon stars (t + wlw), an absolutely remarkable thing (bi), we are the ants (people argue if it counts as sci-fi or not... YA mlm) Hopefully it's a good start!

to be completely honest, i dont mind sponsored videos. the person i like it is getting money for their works. kudos to them. i will make jokes about getting that coin because... what does it affect me? :D i have always wondered if you have a side job besides youtube?

Halfway through I was about to comment on how you manage 2 YT channels and a full-time job (i guess you are a lawyer?). It's really commendable dude.

Looks like this is her full time job now. And no one would be able to manage a full-time job plus 2 big YT channels, common now.

If people are hiding their sponsorship they are breaking the law. There is a reason sponsors are supposed to be disclosed. I do really trust you will say what you really think but for most I don't. But I am fine with people getting sponsored. You spend a lot of time and effort to make these videos, not even talking about the money you have to spend to make quality videos. So sponsor away.....
@BookswithEmilyFox2 жыл бұрын
The laws are different in different countries but some people will always be willing to lie for money sadly. Thank you 💜

It wasn't always illegal. So technically a couple of years ago, they were just being shifty. Like now you have to mention if something is gifted, but many people still don't because that's "not sponsored". They don't realise that them sending them free products counts and they have to declare that. But a lot don't. It's also complicated on which laws you have to follow due to the fact that youtube is an american company that anyone in the world can access. But I do remember when youtube was a free for all, where you didn't have to declare sponsorships or if they had sent you the product for free. I remember when "Thanks to -brand- for making this video possible." was the rage. Even though it wasn't clear that they meant they were being sponsored and getting paid for the video. The laws have also become more strict. Now you need to make it clear, where as before, you could flash "ad" for 2 seconds and be fine. There have been a lot of changes in this regard and hopefully more are coming e.g. children in vlogs. Old school youtubers got away with a lot and some of them, still do.

The sponsor topic is weird. Like, someone new to your channel might find it weird that you were sponsored by cereal. But the people who’ve been watching your videos for awhile would know that you really like cereal lol. So you’re probably being honest about the cereal. I’ve seen booktubers be sponsored by a tea company, which makes sense because lots of people drink tea while reading. I’m getting pretty bored with every booktuber out there being sponsored by BOTM. There have been a few sponsorships I’ve seen that have been out there and had nothing at all to do with the topic of the videos, and they are often extremely scripted. I hate those. Please don’t ever do those. We can tell when they are scripted lol.
@BookswithEmilyFox2 жыл бұрын
I agree, tea is definitely a natural combo with books! Working with certain sponsors can be hard. They'll start by saying you can totally say what you want in your own words and when it comes down to it they don't let you. When that happens you won't see me do a second collab with them :/

Also Emily I have talked about it before but can you please not remove red sister from your shelves 😭 it hurts because it was the first book on your recommendation I read that got me into adult fantasy. I have read many fantasies after that but I have not seen better female characters than this book had even ones written by women authors ( I don't know adult fantasy as a genre has so few good female characters, would love some recommendations from you on that!). Those series are so empowering with the most diverse women in fantasy. I mean I'm totally ok if you never read anything by the author in the future or his past series ( which I too am not planning on) could you please still recommend people red sister trilogy( just a request I will still respect wahtever decision you make eventually) Also this could be an interesting topic to discuss in your vlogs shedding more light on what makes an author problematic for you ( since we all have different things we are more sensitive towards.) For example, Khalid Hussaini is considered quite problematic in some countries for his biased political stands ( and for stereotyping) which I know isn't your fault ofcourse for not mentioning. There is no way we could be aware of everything an author has ever done. Just something I would love to see you talk about someday in your vlogs.
