I lost my period for over 8 months when I first went Vegan. I had never missed a period before that but as soon as I went vegan I quit having my period. It was pretty immediate. I was doing the whole HCLF diet and it was terrible for me! My gyno did blood work and an ultrasound and couldn’t find the issue so I went to a Naturopath and she looked at my diet and told me I wasn’t eating enough fats. I was eating super low fat at the time so I upped the amount of fat I was eating and within 6 weeks I got my period back. I didn’t lose my period because I went vegan it was because I was eliminating a crucial macronutrient. Fat is super important for women’s hormones. I wish vegans would quit pushing the low fat high carb diet. They go on this diet and then when they start to lose hair or suffer from amenorrhea they blame veganism when in reality it’s because they aren’t eating a balanced diet or they aren’t eating enough in general.

I'm starting to get concerned because I have been vegan for over 4 years and starting this year, I haven't had my period in the last 3 months...this month will be 4 months. Thinking it could be early menopause...hope not. My mom didn't have it until she was around 57. I'm thinking maybe am not eating enough or that I may not be eating enough fats. Plus I lost my beloved cat to cancer and anemia on January 3rd and have been really sad and missing her...from the end of October until janaury 3rd, I had been trying to save her and spent those months crying and worrying...thinking this all ties in...plus I usually skip breakfast with the intermittent fasting thing. And my periods have mostly been irregular throughout my life.
@ccap3211
@ccap3211 6 жыл бұрын
lovelyvegan princess how old are you? I would say you should put a stop to the intermittent fasting and you probably should raise your fat and calorie intake. Have you been working out really vigorously? I don’t think it would be because of losing your cat unless you’ve been extremely stressed out over it. Really high levels of stress can cause amenorrhea.

I used to get tension headaches on an almost daily basis since I was 11 years old! I went vegan and now I get a headache maybe once every two weeks-and believe me, if anything, since going vegan my life has gotten more stressful and I’ve gotten less sleep so this is definitely diet-related!

Vegan hair loss is real.... I've been vegan 8 months now and a couple months ago I started noticing I'm picking hair off myself ALL the time. I eat tons of beans and tofu and greens, but I started a Lysine supplement too, and I take a multi, and B12, and DHA... My hair also seems duller. Really hoping it stops soon. Veganism has helped so many other aspects of my life it's a small price to pay, but still.

Bren go on cronometer to track your meals and nutrients to see if you are missing anything. I do know a few people who said they lost hair when going when but after a couple months got it back. Also I would recommend downloading the Daily Dozen app to check off things like berries and beans every day. You could also ask Simnett Nutrition he does a 'Ask Me Mondays' video every Monday where he answers health questions he is a Nutritionist. Good luck x

Hi, I have read a lot about hair loss on a vegan diet. One of the reasons can be that you have some problems with your thyroid. Normally soy is not problematic but if you have thyroid issues, soy can affect it negatively. You don't have to cut out soy completely but maybe try to reduce it a bit. Also use Iodine salt. Jack Norris is a registered dietitian and has written an article about this issue.

Dani, thank you so much for answering my question! 💜 I’m almost 19 weeks now. That was very helpful. I’m definitely going to stop stressing about it so much! If all i want for dinner is a vegan burger and fries (or sometimes just fries) then so be it! 😂 Thank you!!
@NikkiVegan
@NikkiVegan 6 жыл бұрын
Love that! Sometimes I eat whatever I want but other times if I want fries for dinner, I'll add a small salad on the side. That way I'm not taking anything away...I'm still having what I want...but I'm adding a little somethin healthy on the side which usually makes me feel good. That's a tip that I learned from Deliciously Ella and I love that mentality

THANK YOU for pointing out 1) that veganism is not the cure-all miracle to ALL chronic pain/disease 2) that we, as humans, do not have 100% control of our health. While, yes, I noticed significant improvement in some areas of my health / well-being when shifting to a plant-based lifestyle / diet, I also experienced setbacks as a result. Learning to thrive within our limits is the key ... and how I intend to live my life :)

I experienced hair loss when transitioning from vegetarian to vegan. I was previously eating a lot of dairy and then stopped over night. My doctor said my hair loss was TE likely due to the fact I stopped ingesting large amounts of dairy hormones. I had TE previously when getting on or off the pill. It's the same type of hair loss that women experience after having a baby. It usually lasts 4-6 months and then stops. It's not something to panic over.

Jacque Ellis that’s really interesting. I haven’t heard that explanation before but it makes sense. I experienced the same thing two years ago when I transitioned from vegetarian to vegan. My hair loss lasted about two to three months and I really focused on eating healthy and getting lots of nutrition

I remember i went vegan because of health issues. I was diagnosed with GERD which is a disease where my body produces way too much stomach acid and certain foods make it ten times worse. I noticed one day dairy and meat made it flare up. I was throwing up stomach acid every morning and a few times during the day depending on what i ate the previous day. I was on four different meds and finally i was like screw it im going vegan. Within that first week my throwing up stopped and i think it was about a monthish after i didnt need my meds. Thank God because they were expensive!!! It was so worth it. I honestly havent had any issues for so long i forget about it now.

Loved this video! I loved how your really talked from your experiences. Personally, veganism has helped me to manage the joint pain from the chronic illness I have, Ehler danlos. Also, veganism has helped me to deal with my extreme food allergies. I had multiple food allergies since birth, such as wheat, dairy, corn, oat, chia seeds, macadamia nut, hazelnut, peanut, coconut, apple, pumpkin, pepper, tomato and food dye. I went anaphylactic from being in the same room as peanuts multiple times and even from mango shampoo when I was little. They were not just food sensitivities, but life threatening food allergies. Although I went vegan to boycott the meat and dairy industry, I also heard that veganism can reverse food allergies. I have to admit, I did not believe that this was true, but I gave veganism a chance anyway. In June 2017, a little over a year of being vegan, I was in shock to come back negative (I am no longer allergic) to oat, chia seeds, macadamia nut, apple, coconut, chia seeds, pumpkin, hazelnut and mango. I can also be in the same room as peanuts! The allergist told me that he has never seen me this healthy. My eczema is completely gone and my digestive track is starting to function better. I was astounded when he said that he believes that the vegan lifestyle really helped me. He thinks that in going vegan, my body detoxed and rebooted my body systems.

I think Nikki made a great comment here about the fact that she sometimes feels a little more icky/sluggish after all the tastes as they are typically indulgent items. In addition to "I'd rate this on a scale of 1-10," it'd be great to also hear how likely you'd add this to your "weekly" grocery list. Y'all are rocking it. Keep it up!

I wasn't able to be vegan everytime I tried bc I lost my period. Even though in cronometer I meet all the iron requirements, I STILL need to take a vegan iron by Thorne on amazon to be able to be vegan. My b12 spray has helped so much, as well. But I am a person who needs ALOT of iron & now my bloodwork turns out REALLY great.
@jackiesullivan5638

I dont know if your dr told you this but if you take your iron pill with orange juice your body holds on to double the iron. It actually works too!!! Plus if you burp up the pill later its not so bad because its mixed with orange juice lol.

Yes you're right, I've heard vitamin c does increase the absorption. You have to not consume calcium though & many oj's are calcium-fortified---so just watch for that. Calcium, coffee & tea are def to b avoided for good absorption. I've been pairing my iron with this b12 & it's AMAZING! smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014JOBXS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Fru-Gal hey eating enough fat is also important for consistent periods. Also, something that is often overlooked but is so important is your omega 3:6 ratio. Make sure to have 2 tbsp of ground flax a day not even just for periods but for overall health (and try to limit your oil consumption). All my life I had irregular periods and going vegan didn't change it but then when I started being consistent with flax seeds (ground) I finally got consistent periods.
@motorcyclehair
@motorcyclehair 6 жыл бұрын
How VERY interesting. Yes, I will take your advice & try to get 2tbs of flax in. I just recently learned about the omega 3:6 ratio & had no idea that one cause lower while the other increases inflamation in the body. I take a Thorne Bisglycinate iron from amazon--my blood work came back looking great & periods have been consistent but not as long.

So much great information, thank you all. Over 15 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer hormone positive, I ate SAD at the time, but was told that a more plant based diet will help side effects. It took 3 years before I went pescatarian, then vegetarian then vegan for +4 years now. All my doctors say if they did not know I had cancer I would be the healthiest person they know. Vegan is not curing my cancer but it makes the rest of my life so great and easy. All my blood work is coming back great. But right now I have a lot of pain, so off to the doctor I go. No magic pill here, but if you find one I would love it.

Susan Hoppe that's wonderful to hear I hope you're doing well. Dr Michael Greger a plant based doctor recommends not just a vegan diet for best results with cancer but a whole food plant based diet- no oil, refined foods like white sugar etc.
