So, not a question but it might help someone else. The question of where would you look for it first is great, but sometimes you won't need the item for 6 months....case in point, buying one water filter for my fridge costs the same as buying 3 filters. 3 filters will last a year and a half! So, I asked myself where would I look for these first (I wouldn't because I just bought a fridge with a filter). I decided that my laundry room/pantry would be great, but I needed to help myself remember not just where but when to change them. Technology is my friend! I put in my phone's calendar "water filter change" and under location "pantry cabinet top shelf". The reminder repeats every 6 months. Hope that helps someone else whose Mom brain fails them like mine.

I love the “where is the…” question. I raised a grandson, who asked this constantly. Eventually, getting creative, I bought a BIG red clothes basket and put it in his closet. Whenever I found something out of place, that is where I put it. Then I made a sign for his room saying: “ if the question starts with… “where is my….”, “look in the red basket!” Eventually he stopped asking and just went there first! I am very constant and non conversational, (no debate or complaining) he just had to figure it out on his own. It worked!

About donating one single earring… Some of us actually sometimes enjoy wearing two different earrings! I found a single earring a few months ago and I’m actually looking for another one to complete the pair, but I’ve already worn it with some other earrings that I have that are kind of similar in some way but having different ones is kind of fun. 😄😀

The credits look great! Love that bright blue and white backdrop too, it’s very energizing. With kitchen stuff that we both use I often defer to my husband’s preferred spot just so I don’t have to answer the question of where is that --? Being asked annoys me more than having some things in the “wrong” spot so I’ve started asking him “where would you look for this first? and putting it there. For office stuff we have more space so we just have more doubles of things.

I have to say -- i absolutely LOVE watching KZbin videos on decluttering and organizing. Mostly, I have found them entertaining and a good way to procrastinate on actually DOING any of the above. But...your videos and style really resonate with me, and at age 67, after years of feeling so discouraged about my house, you have actually kicked my butt and gotten me started. My house is only 600 square feet, so you can imagine. Anyway, thank you.. I still have a stuffed bedroom closet and about 8 bins of "who knows what" to tackle...but I've made good progress in my kitchen and dining and living rooms. I only kept two rubber spatulas! LOL Every time I sit with people at my church's coffee hour, I find myself quoting you. "Where is the first place you'd look for this...take it there now!" (or "Just do something..make it BETTER!") Keep up the good work, and thank you for making me laugh -- at myself as well as you!

Scissors are an exception to the "minimal" rule. Better to have an appropriate pair anywhere they're used, so they don't get abandoned or dropped off where you WOULDN'T look for them. Kitchen, desk, laundry, bathrooms, kid's bedrooms, craft space, workshop, etc.

OK, for those of us who haven't digitized much of our incoming paper, or are hesitant to, but don't have a great filing system in place, let me introduce you to the box method my mom helped me set up a few years ago. At the beginning of the year, I get a 9x14x4 I think cardboard shipping box from Staples. And then I put everything I think I might need to save in it. At the end of the year I label it, and put it away to sit for the theoretical 7 years I might need to save it for. Then I can just shred it. It's not hard to find things actually when you remember when ish in the year it was, because it's stacked chronologically. And I don't put in things that need to be permanently saved, those go in my important papers binder. Also, my thought for someone who's not being sarcastic about looking for something where it is, is that maybe that's the spot for it, and if you can move everything else away then it can work. If paper work goes on the coffee table because that's where you deal with it, then maybe you need an inbox that sits there, or a filing cabinet right next to it. I put my shoes under the bed for years. When I got a new house, I thought it was time for a shoe rack. Turns out, I actually like my shoes under the bed, so I came up with a solution to keep them nice and tidy, and I love it.

I’m always wanting KZbinrs to consider disabilities. So thank you Reid for the larger font and slower speed. So many videos are ruined for me by quick cuts, fast zooms and fast pans. Boy, once you put yourself out there, the criticism comes 🙄. To me, your question, "Where would I look for it first?", is no different from what organized people have said for years. Everything has a home and should be in it. If said item is in it's home, that's where you look for it. If you go to brush your teeth, do you look for your toothbrush in the garage? Lighten up, naysayers. Dana has the right idea. BTW, Dana...love the earrings and that shade of blue, is you! 🙂👍

Last is first: The slower pace of the end comments is fabulous. Still an issue (for me) are the cute little insets/screen shots showing what’s available next, etc. They cover up a major portion of my screen…and it’s a big screen. Your paper clutter comments have me going back to rewatch that video. I still have a crapalicious amount of paper (mostly clutter) I try addressing, but I am not winning, because I a) don’t want to; b) when I do start, I don’t have time to focus long enough so that if I DO have to stop, I can’t remember my strategy from the last time; and c) I live with a person who does it as well, but ENTIRELY different from me (or anyone else I have ever encountered). My frustration at time, energy, focus factors, and predictable interruptions becomes another pile of clutter in my brain. Last frustration factor in this pile: All the cute, but not entirely usable, free printables I THINK will carry me through to the next level of calm and peace. I also talk myself into and out of purchases of all types (including YOUR books, clothes I really need, groceries, etc.) because of both financial constraints and the fears of both wasting the money because they just sit and wasting my precious space (both literal and physical) on something I do not use, but will…

I pick out three colours & everything that I wash & hang for that time period goes together so I'm not throwing clothes around trying to put an outfit together. I used a lot of your video info to do a massive decluttering of my closets over the summer. I also have a boxes-of-stuff in the office problem. Not sure why I needed to re-hear what you always tell us, but the what-I-need-to-do lightbulb went off while I was watching this video. I know how to attack this problem that has been overwhelming me for a couple of weeks: Just get the trash out of the boxes so there will be less stuff!! Not sure why I was so slow on the uptake after doing the same process over the summer, but thanks for yet another sanity-saving video. I feel less stressed just knowing where to begin.

i think of my clutter threshold as a container in and of itself. I used to work in a thrift store, and we would take the jewelry that was missing a peice/ broken in big jars. They would be sold within a couple days! Also, regarding scissors specificly, i have several pairs 9not just because i'm a crafter), and several "where would i look' places for them.

Regarding the first Q in the Q&A, I keep only the clothes I wear daily in my main closet. The rest (seasonal and those I haven't gone through to declutter yet) are in a closet in the spare bedroom. Since I don't have many clothes hanging in my main closet now, I put a skinny set of drawers in the closet. It holds my undies, bras, and socks. The closet isn't full. The drawers aren't full. It's so easy to maintain now that I have simplified. When the seasons were changing, I needed to have both short and long sleeved shirts in my closet. Even though I only added 4 shirts and there was plenty of room still in my closet, I felt anxious and overwhelmed. I knew it was temporary, but I went ahead and moved a couple of shirts to the spare closet. I felt better. That clutter threshold thing is REAL, y'all!!!

0:21 - I'm struggling with clothes, what to do if my containers fit a lot more than my clutter threshold? When I put all my clothes they fit comfortably in my large closet, but in some time they will be all over the place and overwhelming because I can't handle them. 2:05 - But WHY would you have only donated one earring? Nitpicky and teasing, I know, but if you only have one of a pair then don't donate it! 3:05 - After you pay bills do you save records and how long? 4:39 - Suggestions on how to transition through a big area that has become gridlocked from years of overwhelming craft clutter? 5:51 - What if the answer to 'Where would I look for this first?' is 'right here in this pile of junk'? 7:04 - Where you stopped (after step 3 in the decluttering process) would you put like things with like (consolidate) at that point? 10:05 - What to do if there are two people in your house and you would look one place and put it there but the other person looks in a totally different place?

I do have a question that you might have answered but I missed. I have a tiny (not new Tiny Home) and old 1947 tiny house with limited storage, limited counter tops, very limited everything. The things I have (for the most part) are things I need and use and wear and have to have. My house typically looks cluttered. Do you have some insights to help. Seriously, I just need some more ideas. And just FYI -- I love your decluttering method and use it -- I actually look forward to doing my decluttering. It is like a little gift when I have time -- "oh goodie, I get to tackle this spot!"

Carla, Dana's good friend Cas, from Clutterbug has awesome insight into this type of problem. She's identified 4 different styles of dealing with clutter, based on whether you 1) like seeing your stuff when it's stored, or not & 2) whether you'd store it in big categories or smaller ones. Based on the 4 resulting combinations helps you best sort the stuff that you want to keep, so the finished result doesn't overwhelm your clutter threshold, esp in a small space.

Love the new credits!!! I would often try to read the credits before but gave up because there was too much “rewinding” going as I couldn’t read fast enough.

@Reid, thank you for slowing down the credits! Thank you for helping to edit the videos, when I see the credits it warms my heart and makes me chuckle, because it usually sounds like something my son would say after helping me edit a video (although I haven't gotten to help me just yet! LOL) Thank you for being such a blessing to your Mom. Her videos and books really do help me on my journey! @Dana THANK YOU for the courage to start your journey, AND the courage to share your journey with us! Your books and videos have helped me so much, even though I've just barely started! Lol I started off strong March 2021, but then kinda fell back into old patterns and stopped the decluttering process. (Although I HAVE kept up the "DO THE DISHES" rule! And that TRULY makes a huge difference for me because before that I would put them off SOOOOO LONG until the pile was SO BIG it would literally cause me back pain to "do the dishes", so then, dishes = pain in my thought process, then I would just procrastinate even more!!) Here I am back again, ready to declutter some more and SO thankful that you are making more videos!!! You are appreciated! God bless you and your family!

My husband also changed everything he could over to auto pay with our bills, what a difference in paper pile up. Now if we could ever stop junk mail. We are on list for no call and junk mail but not much help.

My husband stands over the garbage can and tosses all junk mail in it before he takes everything requiring action to the billpaying-notices cubbies of his desk. He can tell junk mail pretty much on sight now without opening envelopes.

Seems like the credits rolled by more slowly... I usually have to scroll back to read. I love Q/A Dana. It helps me understand others think the same as me. Your drawer video in the kitchen ... was pretty simple! I distinctly remember you making a decision regarding handheld can openers, tossing one, and then putting the one you like onto the counter where it belongs. So technically, wasn’t that kind of step 4 questions? Or just duh clutter?

I recently encountered this issue of "What if the first place I would look for it is right here in this pile of clutter?" Thinking of where to put a carton of earplugs, I realized that the first place I'd look for it was right there in that box of random stuff in the middle of the game room floor. Eliminating that option, I realized that the 2nd place I'd look for it was a semi-random box of stuff on the floor in the living room that I also plan to declutter. Eliminating that option, I realized that the 3rd place I'd look for it was a junk drawer in my bedroom that I'd eliminated last year. Eliminating that option, I ended up deciding on a shelf in the closet by the front door, because earplugs are used when I'm going out shopping or other places with lots of stimuli. We'll see if that works for me. Interestingly, a few hours later, I found a baggy of earplugs already in the 2nd place I would look for them!
