Why does it seem to me that Douglas needs to be so careful to let everyone know that he is definitely not against immigration? As an immigrant to the West I don't understand why Westerners act like it is their supreme moral duty to open up their country to everyone else in the world that is less fortunate. It is not the duty of the West to save the rest of the world from itself. You need to pad population numbers to keep up your GDP or whatever economic metric you think will benefit you and make you richer, fine, let some of these immigrants in. But you should only be motivated by the net benefits these immigrants can bring you, and you should be certain to vet the hell out of them and make sure they are not a threat to your society and swiftly deport them in the event they turn out to be a threat. The West owes us nothing, but we owe it a debt of gratitude and above all we have to strive to integrate and strenghten our host nations, otherwise we just end up being a bunch of dangerous ingrates that ruin everything for everyone.

That was beautiful;Thank you so much for saying it. For those of us born in the West, the U.S. in particular, it has sadly become a no no to speak about our country favorably. To display even a small amount of pride for any of the reasons that make this country such a wonderful place is guaranteed to be met with condemnation and a good scolding about all the terrible things our country has done… and a reminder that we’re racist, sexist, homophobic, and so on. And that’s not to say this country is perfect; throughout its history the U.S. has messed up and been in the wrong about all sorts of things in the past… but as a whole, I do believe that compared to the rest of the world, currently and throughout history this is a damn good place to live. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Those if us who are born here, we tend not to understand that true evil does indeed exist in this this world; we waste precious time and energy bickering over absolute nonsense, squandering away all the precious gifts that were bestowed upon us by better men than we.
@steves.5342

The majority of 'immigrants' coming into the country now do NOTHING to benefit the country economically. They should definitely be vetted. Most countries will not allow you to immigrate unless you can demonstrate you will not simply be a drain on society. We have plenty who are BORN here draining society and providing no benefit to anyone as it is. Per capita a lot of them are actually more of a drain than a lot of immigrants. Btw, that all holds true whether you're in the UK or the US.

Dilahunty- “I have no objection to a one world one planet community. . . . I don’t have some cherished culture. “ So he is ok with a Chicom or Islamist State world order? Not me. I am quite partial to a Western culture protecting individual liberties based on reasoning from Enlightenment roots. Murray is so much wiser than Dilahunty.

That feels like a deliberate strawman. Of course Matt Dillahunty, who supports a secular state, wouldn't support an Islamist State world order. Perhaps you THINK Matt doesn't care what SORT of one world community there is, but that would be... clearly untrue.

@@ronhoward121 “That seems like a deliberate straw man” . . . Strawman? That is a direct quote of what he said. Somewhere along the line he probably smoked a couple of bongs and listened to John Lennon’s “Imagine”. And based his political ideology on that adolescent tingle of enlightenment. My point is that Dilahunty often espouses childish political views that simply don’t stand up when he is debating someone like Murray. To his credit, Dilahunty has been a proponent of some interesting arguments denouncing religious ideologies. But when he moves into the political arena and (for example) espouses open borders and massive society changing immigration into western democracies, he is an idiot.

@@ronhoward121 Dilahunty childishly supports open borders policies where tens of millions of the worlds discontents can enter western democracies unchecked. The logical result will be islamicism. And cultural anarchy. Great Britain and European Union are recent testing grounds of these policies. If he is not an expert on political ideas, why does he open his mouth and give us his half- baked political ideas? Stick to what he is good at. I like his work when he does that.
@endoalley680
@endoalley680 11 ай бұрын
@OliTwisoak "I don’t have some cherished culture." Means he does not believe our current western culture is superior to Islamic culture. When you add to that he is for open borders, then the consequence will always be that the more aggressive culture, especially when that culture is readily transmitted vertically from parents to children, by people who reproduce offspring at many times the factor of western populations, will wind up the dominant culture. That in essence is what he is saying. "emphasized that it was in the Utopian sense" . . . Magical Utopian thinking is for childish minds. Those whose task it is to govern should never be overly influenced by childish minds. Those who govern, those who guard our sovereign borders must be realistic in their world viewpoint. And should cherish and fight for all that is superior in our culture compared to others.

Indonesia, Jordan (for a relative value of thriving), many gulf states - but your question ignores a lot of history. No country would be doing well were it to have gone through what much of the Muslim world has gone through over the last century in particular, or sitting in the geographic locations they are. Once upon a time, the Ottoman Empire lead the world. But it is not because of Islam that it no longer does.

I was born in Hungary and the view of Islam from that part of the world has come about due to familiarity. And 500 years after the Ottomans left Islam flared up, and we saw what happened in the former Yugoslavia. That war was as much about Islamists flexing their muscles as it was about Croatia wanting independence and Serbia wanting to dominate. And what happened on Oct 7 in Israel was exactly what happened in Srebrenica.

@user-se8es5yt9j I learned to swim in a Turkish bath and back then we were still taught about the visits from the Ottomans. The whole "religion of peace" is both bullshit and accurate. Yes,there will be peace when the whole world converts to Islam, is the idea. But that's not accurate either as Sunni and Shia aren't exactly best of friends. As for those of us from the V4? Well there used to be crazy animosity (some well deserved) towards us Magyars from Romania and the former Czechoslovakia, but fact is we have more in common with each other than anyone else. We're not east nor are we west and after centuries of foreign rule the people there just want to govern themselves. And you can't do that if you open the door to Islam. As western Europe is finding out. The average Muslim is just fine. But with Islam comes Islamists. And they're as radical as any Commie in the politburo or jack booted thugs. And there's a reason why Hitler admired Islam.

28:04 - I absolutely agree with Douglas Murray on this one. Eulogizing over the wonders of the Universe is small comfort when it comes to coping with the loss of a loved one. Until Atheism can fill this void, along with the sense of community and belonging that Religion provides, we’ll always have need of it in some form or other.

I think some familiarity with Sam Harris Waking Up project is warranted, within this proposition. He has gathered together an impressive array of buddhist-centred resources, not requiring belief in a god or gods or rituals, and coupled with well-grounded psychological and philosophical information ... that adds up to a highly serviceable replacement for traditional religions. And not to mock or minimise the heavy blow of loss of a loved one, but to cope with it by dubious means (they're in a better place, we'll be together again one day, etc ...) when demonstrably better means are available ... is partly what that project is about.
@H.Hardrada

I think so, too. I'm not religious, but I think, at the very least, atheism failed to provide a substantial story for many people. There is more than just cold concrete truth. You would have to be psychopathic to be able to draw a fulfilling life from just that.

@@TheWanderingPensioner To reference buddhist-centered resources as a way to avoid ritualistic beliefs is... incoherent to out it nicely. Religion doesn't require a formal belief in a "god" or "gods". Sam Harris's project is fundamentally a religious enterprise, when examined on the deeper levels.

A government killing innocents is NOT more respected than a terrorist group killing innocents. Killing is killing and that cannot be disputed at all. The Israeli government have killed far far far more innocents than Hamas can dream of and yet Israel are the ones being portrayed as the victims. Well before October the 7th, Israel have killed an overwhelming amount of innocent Palestinians and yet it does not get reported and Israel are not held accountable by the likes of Murray and Piers Morgan, are they? Despite them doing something possibly worse than Hamas. I don't understand how people can look through all this with tinted glasses. "Hamas are wrong for killing innocents, but its perfectly fine for a Israeli government to kill thousands more, bomb entire cities and deprive innocents of safety, fuel and healthcare" - what on earth is wrong with people. If anything it just shows a distain for Arabs/Islam and Muslims.

Two things - #1 is that believing in God vs a man-made religion can be two completely different things, #2 is that you really just fear the nature of human beings more than some kind of benefit of believing in God. That's fair, I do think there are some people that refrain from doing awful things because they think God is watching them. I don't know if you meant it this way...but the issue I take is with the "people who are not religious recognize that something is missing part". A lot of religious people put themselves on a high horse because of this and look down on agnostics and atheists because "something is missing" with them when that's really not true. They used to do the same things with homosexuality, saying they know deep down that homosexuals "know" what they're doing is wrong. It's really just seeing people that are different than them as less than.

Even Murray doesn't think Matt actually believes we should dissolve all governments -- Matt even says, "fantasy land" describing the idea. You cultists are wild. I agree somewhat with olassmith8132 though maybe for different reasons. Matt Dillahunti in his atheism seems just as blindly dogmatic in his beliefs as the devoutly religious he critiques. @@Quinn37What he's saying from 05:47 to whenever he finishes that point - that's an astoundingly delusional perception of human nature. Star Trek, as wonderful as that world sounds, is an absolute impossibility. Maybe after a (quite literal) eon of evolution has guided human nature down that path (which is an entire fantasy in itself) we might be able to thrive in some sort of one-world community, but the sheer amount of violence (ironically, of course) that would be required to bring about that sort of 'utiopia' would make Alexander or Genghis blush. It's such unadulterated batshittery that I almost think he cannot be serious. ...I do love how he missed Murray's shot at 07:20 😂

@@allrequiredfields couple things, even if I take him as you did, I wouldn't call that "scary" (although that is somewhat ambiguous tbf). I took him to be making a comment that he personally doesn't value some superficial cultural identity. And while I lean toward you in some sense of the practical impossibility, he seemed to me to be recognizing that that "utopia" isn't imminent. As far as Murray's comment at 7:20, I initially thought it might be a shot, but then passed it off as he genuinely didn't hear him correct. I can't imagine a man of Murray's intellect would pass off ranked voting as "rigged" without further comment. One could make a case that itnis a very reasonable course of action if you want to get the leader most satisfactory to the constituents as a whole. I do think Matt was intellectually put of his element here. I would agree to some degree he can be a bit dogmatic, but I just don't find myself fearful of his ideas.

@@garethevans3600 The problem here is that "woman" is not a biological designation but a cultural one. As our culture changes, so does the designation and it happens that different people define this term differently accordingly. Furthermore, those people who believe that they have a clear definition of what "woman" is, are often dismissive of how their argument is not water-tight. For example, they may say that any person who is XX is a "woman" and any person who is XY is a "man", completely ignoring that they would socially designate an XY AIS person as a "woman" since she appears to look like a woman. Those on the other side, who argue that there are no generally-accepted indicia to determine woman-ness, have the opposite problem of being forced to accept the declaration by a person that they are a "woman" despite matching all of the indicators of a cisgender XY person with facial hair and strong upper body strength simply because of the declaration.

It may be the case that most women would qualify as such, but a definition that leaves out edge cases is not a viable definition.

Mr. Dillahunty said he had asked people why they liked Jordan Peterson and nobody could actually answer. Here it is for me: he let me understand that I could both not actively believe in God and still love Christ and going to church. I felt like I was too religious to be an atheist and too atheistic to be religious. Now I am neither consumed by doubt nor feel like I'm being intellectually dishonest with myself.

So much I can say, however on the abortion topic, as a woman whom had an abortion in my late 20’s and often regret it, though under the circumstances I have compassion for myself given where I was at in life. I used to be “ pro-choice”, but now I would say I am pro-awareness and responsibility. “Pro-life” for me is not about controlling women’s bodies but rather acutely recognizing the power our bodies yield and that to take that for granted just to fulfill a sexual desire without committing is irresponsible. My child would have been 13 years old this year and sometimes thinking about cupping his or her head in my hands brings me to tears.

Thank you for your post. I am fully pro-choice but when I tell pro-lifers that, they seem to assume I walk around telling every pregnant women I meet to abort. I know lots of women who have had abortions, mostly because they got pregnant when they were too young and not in a position to raise a child. The majority of them have mixed feelings about it and more often than not they regret getting pregnant in the first place. The only answer to the problem that I can see is better sex education and better access to contraceptives.

Matt doesn't listen well. Douglas didn't say JP himself was filling the gap, he said JP was sparking conversations about the gap people are experiencing and it resonates because few are talking about it and many young people are starving for real conversations about the void and lack of purpose they are feeling. I do agree that humanity in general is vulnerable to "messianic" figures, especially when everyone is trying to throw the time tested "good life handbook for dummies" (aka the 10 commandments) out the window. But I don't think JP falls into the cult leader category at all. He's not raising a cult following, he's a scholar and teacher.

I am of eastern European heritage and it begins far earlier than the Ottoman empires expansion into Europe. Waves of nomadic tribes have lived and assimilated in the cultures they came to conquer. You could almost say there was far more religous freedom AD 1000 than there is in many countries today. Ir was not a cakewalk but neither did it decide in any context the expansion of any group. It was the fertile soils and precious metals that was a driving force. It' us a very blanket statement to make but by in large true.

Enjoyed this conversation. About people who argue whether God exists or nor. Most debates I've had with folks that don't believe in God I got the impression they NEEDED to convince me God doesn't exist. I sometimes wonder if they're not so sure God doesn't exist and they need their beliefs to be confirmed by people who believe God exists. They often ask me the same questions and ask me for proof of God's existence. Thing is, neither side can be proven completely I think.

That's a bad argument. I don't care what your mythology is, I only care about the actions you take. If your actions are affected by your Mythological Beliefs, then I have to address that your mythology is only in your head. The fact that there are tens of thousands of completely contradictory religions out there, means that obviously some of them have to be necessarily false. Many bad practices come from a variety of ancient mythology structures. If someone is doing something I feel is harmful to others, and it's based on some ancient tradition that doesn't make any sense to maintain, then their beliefs become the problem I have to deal with. If you cannot demonstrate that your beliefs are based in Reality, then why should I treat you any differently than someone basing their beliefs on Scientology or Alien Lizard Conspiracy Theory?

I agree with much of what you said. I think most if not all religions have some truth and some myths. I used to get in arguments about religious beliefs, but I don't any more. I know I don't know everything and I know no one else does either. A lot of what people believe are based on their childhood. As a child I attended a Christian Church and school. As I got older I started questioning things. For a time, I decided I was and atheist. Later years things I read and watched seemed to say there's more to the story. Much more. @@13shadowwolf

Why do people keep saying this. Nearly every word has multiple definitions, but having multiple definitions is not the same as having infinite definitions. The word cell has a biological definition, a definition in chemistry as in a power source, and a definition as in a jail containment. That is 3 definition, that is not infinite. There is literally, quite literally, no further way to be wrong to say "woman" has multiple definitions is equivalent to having infinite definitions. I mean you can't be more wrong, think about it. Also, woman has always meant feminine figures, I'm sorry if you dislike facts but facts don't care about your feelings. Name me one time in history in any culture in any language that expressly did not use woman as a definition of feminine figures. Name one and I will admit I'm wrong. Otherwise you will admit you are the one who is trying to unilaterally change the definitions of a word to fit your own political agenda.
