I worship in a very small church, where we do not have the vocal talent or technology to assist our hymn leaders. However, they are authentic in their flawed service. You are raising salient points. I’m glad that our services are old fashioned and not a production.

21:39 "You can't feature people's gifts when they don't have them." That's the most polite way to say people who can't sing well shouldn't be on the worship team 😂

I love how you think through things. Because I dislike autotune, especially as an effect on pop records, I automatically say that it should not be used. We want to hear the human voice singing. But then, like any contrarian, I wonder if the principle holds. If not autotune, why EQ? Or click tracks? EQ changes the quality of the voice (for me, though, I think of it as correcting for the sound system and returning it to its natural sound as much as possible). Why the perfection of the click track? I also love that you think the singer should not even be heard at all times. People in our church think that something is failing if you don't hear the singer above the congregation at all times. "Why do we even have microphones, then?" they ask.

A good tip to put brand new introduced songs into slot 2 or slot 3 rather than the first or last song. Never thought through the implications there - had traditionally put the brand new song in the first bracket.

No autotune for the folks on stage, but they could always ask the congregation to sing louder and drown out the miscreants!

Hey! Thank you for podcast and sharing wisdom with us. About auto tune: When you say «Lofty speech feats into a category of perfectly tuned vocals”, isn’t Paul was 1. Very skilful in rhetoric but used that tool not to enhance mans wisdom but Christian wisdom? 2, isn’t Paul argument about “man’s wisdom” which is not connected with tools, but with foundation of truth and arguments. IMHO that’s a question is about balance about 1. Desire (taking lessons and practicing at home) to Improve vocal skills and 2. Tech opportunities (like we use equaliser to overcome limitations of Building acoustic) Praying for your ministry. And thank you again

I absolutely do NOT support the use of autotune. Under any circumstances. Either practice and improve your skills or DON'T sing. Period.

Then where is the line? If you think auto tune is not acceptable, then is it wrong to shape and adjust your voice with EQ? How about adding reverb to a live stream? If it’s not happening “in the room” is it wrong to use it for artistic purposes? God made us creative

Stop!! 🛑 You are not addressing this individual's problem. According to Matthew 18:15 this person is sinning against all of the worship team and is in disobedience to scripture. They are also leaven. What they are doing will infect or permeate the whole group of those they come around if they are living an unholy life. Check out what God instructed Israel to do to idolaters in battle. Cleanse the land of impurities. Worshiping God is a special calling. Warn them once. You have. If no change take someone with you to warn them again. If this person persists, bring them before the church. And finally, tell them to leave the group until this issue is completely dealt with. Good thing this is the period of grace, otherwise they would be stoned to death. No. That is not drastic. Read what is said in chapter 38 of Deuteronomy.
