I mean, asking .308 or 6.5CM is a limiting question, but i guess this is about a short action rifle. Army is going to 300 Norma and 338 Norma, keeping .308 barrels in the contract mostly for training purposes.

I am very fortunate to have a neighbor that has a 500 yard range and we have tested both of these cartridges with 10 different bullets. The 308 Win does more damage and penetrates better at 500 yards against hard targets. We used cinder blocks and stacks of plywood. IMO, the 6.5 Creedmoor is a great cartridge for animals the size of mule deer and smaller out to 400 yards, especially if you want a light weight rifle or carbine. During WW2, the Japanese came to the same conclusion. Their 6.5 did not penetrate very well against hard targets and found that the British 303 was much better. Then they developed their own 7.7(303).

Because 6.5 Creedmoor beats it in every way other than extreme barrel life. At that point... it's not really an issue. I made a video about this years ago and it hurt so many feelings.

The better question is why 8.6 verses 6.5 same case less performance. Will anyone ever fire Enough subsonic 8.6 out of a bolt gun to justify not going 6.5 for everything else?

Fast twist. 8.6 is magnum perform with a short barrel and light weight gun with very little recoil. Plus subsonic that you works on target, all the way to 300m.

@@kevinbrittingham6774 The twist rate has nothing to do with performance it's based on max bullet length to lowest velocity. 8.6 is simply a new version of .338 federal with a even shorter case to enable longer bullets. Subsonic performance is interesting, but supersonic performance loses to just about everything including 7.62 NATO.

@@alt5494 the fast twist has a lot to do with performance. Not only does it reduce the sound by transferring it to rotational velocity, but the rotational velocity is a massive factor when that bullet hits the target. Making it much more damaging than slower spinning bullets.
