The AK’s safety is its ejection port cover. Also, unlike the AR platform that was designed as a sealed system to keep debris out, the AK was designed with intentionally loose tolerances to let debris that made its way into the gun easily work its way out. The AR relies on on keeping it out altogether to maintain reliability. If it wasn’t a necessary component, Eugene Stoner wouldn’t have designed it with one.

Do all those other guns have one? No. Do I wish they did? Yes. Protection from ingress of junk is never a bad thing. Same reason I dont have pistols with slide cut outs, just more places for crap to get in.

Have it on mine and wouldn’t miss it at all! (Well maybe a tiny bit bc I live in Arizona desert with blowing sand and dust at times, but I clean my guns) If you forget to close it, cover can actually snag on something pulling it out of a backpack. And I spend more time closing the thing because I’m always messing around, pulling the charging handle (not loaded) checking the bolt, dry fire. Think I’m done… and do it some more lol! Habit.

I have 3lb 300blk build ( 7 inch barrel 1:5 twist) I am just about done with. Slick side, so no forward assist and I don't think I want the dust cover..... saves me a few grams

Not a chance they save money doing this. Think about it, they have to procure an entirely different upper with no EJP mount bosses. That tooling change alone could pay for a lot of covers. It’s just simpler. High speed low drag. Love it!

It’s not a matter of a change in tooling. It’s just altering the code in CAD. They do save $$ by requiring less machine time though. Dont get it twisted… No way in hell they would make this change if it didn’t save them money.
