Oddly a friend of mine who was in Tony Iommi and Albert Chapman's class at school - and also in Tony's Iron Man Bio - was also at the shooting of that Beatles performance and my mom also worked at those studios which were the Alpha television studios in Aston where they shot shows like "Thank your Lucky Stars" which is the show Geezer refers to, and also shows like Lunchbox. A lot of the kids in Birmingham - and Geezer is referring to a show shot in Feb 1963 - were allowed into these two shows for free if they queued up outside. I travelled to Poland with my old friend a couple of months ago and we had a long chat about this show and I recounted Geezer's story but although being at the same school as Ozzy he didn't recall him being there but there were hundreds of kids there so could have missed him. It was actually the first TV show the Beatles appeared on that went out to the whole country as much TV in the UK was regional back then so not every show ran in every region. My friend saw the Beatles at their first show here in Birmingham in 1962 and he helped them carry their gear in. Oddly my friend never saw Black Sabbath live but recounts that in the last weeks in school when they left in I think 1963 Tony brought a guitar into school and played Apache. Up to that point having been in the same class as Tony for years, he had no idea he even played a guitar.

Black Sabbath is my favorite band of all time, but I've never seen them live. Long story from my mis-spent youth. In 1980 I was 12 years old and had a Milwaukee Journal paper route. I was at our "shack" getting my papers and was bragging to anyone that would listen that I going to the "Black and Blue" concert that night, Blue Oyster Cult opening for Black Sabbath on the "Heaven and Hell" tour, Geezer's book cover. Being only 12, my parents said there was no way in hell I was going to the concert, despite me begging like a dog. I was more than disappointed at the time, but in retrospect, it was probably a good thing! By all accounts, BOC took the stage and opened as scheduled. Sabbath, on the other hand, flew into Chicago and the flight was delayed, then they hit traffic enroute to Milwaukee. By the time they took the stage, they were an hour and a half late. The first song into their set some idiot threw a beer bottle and hit Geezer in the head. Sabbath abruptly left the stage and their manager came out and announced, "That's it! Show's over!" The crowd supposedly chanted, "We want Sabbath! We want Sabbath!" When it was apparent that Black Sabbath wasn't coming back, they ripped the Arena apart and practically started a riot in downtown Milwaukee. To this day, Black Sabbath is banned for life from ever playing Milwaukee again.

This is the father of moving basslines within a hard rock or heavy metal environment. There is something very organic between Geezer and Bill Ward. It's almost like they're both behind the beat for a nanosecond. Geezer fingers just above the neck. It's insane and it gives him a totally unique sound. This guy is more influential than many people think. His tone was perfect alongside Tony and a little like Entwistle, he held down the melody during the guitar solos. I could think of people like Cliff Burton and Steve Harris who had to be influenced by Butler. One of the top bassists ever.

But "Black Sabbath" debut album has a vibe that's better than every Ozzy album. And that's a fact!
