Some of you have been asking about the benefits of a Carbon Fiber driveshaft over a aluminum or steel one. Weight is obviously a big factor but safety is an even more important one. If you’re racing or involved in an accident, the carbon fiber shreds like a broom, so it won’t bounce around and damage everything under the car or potentially come up through the floorboard like a steel or aluminum driveshaft may do.

Speed Academy somebody told me that aluminum is better for the street because Rocks come up underneath and hit the carbon fiber and make it start pulling away. Is that true?
@jonalarcon8564
@jonalarcon8564 4 жыл бұрын
Speed Academy but if it chips its junk and has to be replaced it cant be repaired and at 1500 dollars forget it chromoly is the best and likes high speed unless you want to buy a titanium shaft which is stronger then carbon fiber , iv done my research on this subject and if you use two drive shaft safety loops you wont have driveshaft safety issues, if been running my safety loops since the early 80s in my chevelle

RS3 4 Me hey dont use aluminum for the street or carbon fiber use chromoly steel, it's best for all around use carbon fiber is expensive around 1500 dollars and if it chips or is damaged its junk and has to be replaced it cant be repaired , if you want to save on weight use carbon fiber on different car parts not drive train components and if your worried about safety with the shaft under the car install drive shaft safety loops they work I know been using them for years

Aweosme mod. Something I always wanted to do to my s2000 but it is a much smaller weight saving so might not be worth the money. Losing 19lbs of power train rotational mass is fantastic.

Yeah S2000 drive shafts are light as hell as they are. Can't imagine it being worth the money unless it's like a balls to the wall race car build.

Lucky rooster is correct (may not be 1 for every 20, I can’t confirm) but rotating mass is what affects performance the most, I’ve heard people getting these and improving throttle response greatly. Rotating mass is what really robs performance, thats why cars like the Lancer Evo has hollow camshafts, only saves a couple grams, but gives it 1k more rpms than stock mitsubishi eclipses that use the same motor with solid shafts

they say 1 lb of rotational mass = around 4 lbs of static weight so would be around a 80lb power to weight gain supposedly

Hey Mike, the 4.6L V8 S197 is a good purchase but as you can see it takes alot of work to make any real power from it. If we were to do it again, I think we'd shell out the extra cash and buy an 09+ with the Coyote V8 since that motor makes so much more power out of the box.

I remember seeing the magazine on news stands but never even picked it up. Wrongly assumed it was an oval track mag which holds zero interest for me. Now of coarse having watched this channel for yrs and having gone the web site. i really regret not just flipping thru it even once. I feel sure would have liked it. Based solely on the content I see presented here and the website. So checkout the web it has many of the same projects but with greater detail and background. Also some content not show on the channel. I learned of Pete's 930 months before it was even mentioned on the channel. There's also a build of an E-rod equipped 240sx. E-rod is GM SMOG LEGAL LS-3 6.2L 430HP all alloy badass crate motor.

pballer2005 same here, and the bolts supplied were 5mm too long gouging into the pinion flange and one snapping before 50ft.lb. Had to drive the car from Ohio to NC obviously with a slight balance issue due to the bolt and the pinion bearing needed replacement by the time I got to NC. Cost me another $400 to have a shop replace it and $40 for a machine shop to get the bolt out, and another $20 for the right size bolts. DSS went dark on me.

Whoa! cmon guys! That's an overkill! Use a hollow stainless steel shaft instead, that's enough for the amount of power a modded NA 4.6L engine will deliver. I know you're seeking weight reduction, but just strip the interior, that's way cheaper! (I hope you eventually go for a SC to justify it). Nevertheless great video, interesting series, I'll keep up with the build.

I wouldn't argue either, that's why expect a SC in the future, you could build a car with some serious torque with a CF shaft. They would only need a new transmission, diff, tires, brakes, etc.

Yeah I was thinking more like in a long distance future, when they've had the NA build finished and one they stop to look at it and think: "perhaps we should start a new proyect". Other than that I've always liked the idea of the NA build and still expect them to finish it as a NA build.

hey guys great vid on doing the up grade , i have a question to you or anyone else reading this post . i have an 08 shelby mustang GT that has that two piece driveline . my car no matter how hard i try when i go to do a burn out the tires spin like crazy but cant get smoke off the tires even with the traction control off it has the 4.6 w/5 speed i have asked several other people so far no one can tell me why i have tried two other types of tires along with drag slicks played around with a different tune . my own conclusion theory is by it being a two piece driveline im thinking maybe its depriving it from torque making its way to the rear end any thoughts or suggestions ? . i have seen others the same year with a solid drive line blow the tires off the car but id like to find out for sure before i spend a bunch of money on it thanks Bill

Tsal Tsirf haha. ok I'll quit my 15 year career as a mechanic tomorrow. I suppose I should have said that a lighter driveshaft will not make a car noticably faster to the average driver. If you can tell 1/10 of a second in 14 seconds by the seat of your pants good for you. That's about a 1 percent change. There are a lot of things drag racers do to eek milliseconds out of their runs but I'm guessing there are a lot of things that $1200 would be better spent on by the vast majority of people.

also, why get rid of the steering wheel with the airbag? you may have a better seat belt system but isnt your skull going to fly off without a pillow to land on? always seems reckless to get rid of any airbags. you may have high confidence in your driving but if you take that thing outside in public who has very questionable driving skill, some circumstances can be out of your control and you just have no choice but to crash horribly.

or why doesnt the state bitch about really loud exhausts? yet there are laws about unreasonable noise. a loud exhaust isnt reasonable except to car enthusiasts idea of cool and fun. but its actually pretty annoying. imagine everyone was a car enthusiast. then it would just be a droning hell 24/7.

It is illegal in Canada to remove a functioning air bag from a vehicle. They just roll the dice on not getting ticketed for it. Considering the car probably isn't a daily driver the chances they get unlucky and get pulled over by a cop who cares about that stuff is low.
