If I remember correctly, isn't the modern Colombia in the setting the result of a Literal United States of America Military transdimensional recon mission into this miserable universe, That resulted in them being f****** terrified because of all the random god fragments and monsters walking all over the place, so they decided to engineer the creation of a pseudo United States in Thera to try and stabilize the world to prevent everything going to crap and somebody discovering how to breach into other dimensions if some kind of weapons race happened? I'm not sure if it was during an event or something. I remember thinking that it was kind of cool how they were finally starting to address All the obvious connection that world had to our own. I don't think they have done much with it since though, just a few references and Easter eggs, and the rainbow six operators. I hope they bring back this whole transdimensional breaches thing when they are done with the lovecraftian stuff. It would be quite interesting if they introduced a series of new nations as parallel realities, like imagine a Futuristic USA that uses High tech Power armoured Marines, Mechs, Drones and Robots as it's combat teams, or a Red Alert Style Soviet Union with wacky Tesla punk technology and Bear cavalry.

No idea on Rim Billiton, and Aegir is its own thing. Might be wrong, but that's how I see the inspiration

It's not a marker for city, landmark, mountain or ocean or anything that has a physical form. It's not even a "border". Since Terra civilization mainly exist as form of nomadic cities, the hexagons represent "political influence zones". Meaning that's the corresponding country's claim. Tho that doesn't mean the specific space that hexagon covers are populated.
