One thing to remember is this isn’t an old people young people thing. It is people with compromised mental capacity. I’m also not saying this is a dumb people thing. I’m just not smart enough to know a better word. These are just people who are susceptible to misinformation. Aging may be a contributing factor, but it is far from the only thing. Indoctrination is a slow process that takes time to brainwash someone. Plenty of young smart people can fall for it as well because you don’t know it is happening. It also starts with some truths or plausibilities that are difficult to deny. You wouldn’t be able to pull people in with easily proven lies. But once you have them you can feed them any BS you want and they’ll eat it up. You may even be indoctrinated into a number of beliefs you think are your own and just like the mother here will accept some sources while rejecting others. I frequently find myself in a position where I am looking at compelling evidence that goes against my beliefs and wonder how I came to that original belief in the first place. Usually I have been pushed in that direction by a bunch of people repeating misinformation. It’s why you really shouldn’t trust anything on the internet.

@@orangeapples yeah you got a point. I think it really underlies on specific conditions that people are actively in that lead them into cult-like groups like qanon. Older folk probably do feel like they’re times have past and seek something that normalizes their behavior again. Usually the extreme forms IMO. Even our infrastructure has devolved into more rural areas that makes it harder to find diversity in ideas and people. This is more than one individuals responsibility in my opinion. If family members can’t even get through to them, then there’s certain measures that we have to take as a society to change this behavior. I really tried with my closest friends and it felt like I had some impact. But tbh, it also feels like I’m plugging holes with my fingers, waiting for the boat to sink. Especially with how fast misinfo spreads these days, it’s takes too much responsibility for one person to have an absolutely correct perspective. Let alone maintaining someone else’s. This problem definitely consists of people lacking any sense of media literacy. But the reasons why we got here is maybe because we allowed such misinfo to continue to exist in a place where clicks makes more profit than telling the truth.

"America is a free country!" but what does "freedom" really mean? A lack of monarchy, and a democratic voting system... or the idea that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want it, with no consequences? There is no one "truth" or "right" or "good." The Light side and Dark sides of The Force (which, btw, is from a movie franchise, not real) are not absolutes. Thank you for making this! The world we live in right now is so divided and it can be hard to navigate. A lot of people say it’s age, but I’m 55 and I’ve lost friends who were much younger than me. I don’t know if it was common, but when I was growing up I was always taught that you don’t speak about who you vote for. It was compared to telling everyone your salary. In today’s times people are loading their cars/trucks up with flags of the political person they love so much. I think it’s important to show that it affects everyone in the family when this happens and that can be scary.

A lot of woo spirituality is conspiratorial in nature. I saw an orgone pyramid in there, that's some crazy shit: basically The Force but every disease is because of problems in people's orgone energy. Since none of this shit *works,* the branding and marketing is based around casting doubt on actual medicine and actual science through inventing alternate accreditation and saying that all those other "scientists" and "doctors" with "evidence" and "results" are all lying. It's a conspiracy theory in and of itself, and it works because conspiracy cooks will buy *so* much shit man, like they will spend money hand over fist on dumb shit that tells them they're smart.

I feel so sad for her but I really am lost as to how to help. I read a book titled "Liminal Thinking" and it speaks on this topic. It states that the reason its so hard to break in someone is that it's tied to their fundamental belief system anchored to their core which would mean not just not believing in conspiracies but essentially undoing their entirely belief system. Which isn't going to happen. We protect ourselves from this hard digging and our brain does a great job of hiding it from us. Thanks for this video. So glad I'm not alone in this.
