I’m not saying it’s a bad quad, I’m not saying don’t buy it and I’m not saying you get what you pay for either. Great Vid, the ' over travel' is actually the Gimbal which moves slower than the drone. It happened on my X8 after one of the many updates. I think you can fix this by adjusting the Gimbal speed in the settings.

Whilst I can appreciate those that bought this drone for doing photography and videography in regards to the concerns that they have. I'm neither a photographer nor a videographer I love my Fimi it is so much better than the first drone I owned so I have no problem with it at all

It's a 360$USD unit delivered. That aside a similarly sized drone is twice that price at least, upwards of 1400$. Comparisons have to be taken with a grain of salt. You are going to give something up for the cost difference. Now not saying the issues aren't annoying, they definitely are. But FIMI is not a drone specific company like DJI Fimi is a small electronics company. Phones, tablets, cameras, headphones so they do not have the dedication of support. It is nice to see some updates and I hope it continues. I'd say it definitely is the best bang for the buck.

Chris Kueppers I agree and we are use to lower budget quads camera quality which is fine but the gimbal.....no no no Just my opinion and expectations along with sharing what I see and what I can improve upon in the camera. I took a gamble with the Zino 2. But after this video I won't purchase this quad. I would think after the horizon tilt on the first Fimi x8 they would of fixed the issue. But I'm staying tune to more of your content with this quad.. Look forward to more great content as always.. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you for this honest review. I purchased this Drone a few months ago and have had the same issues. I had the 2018 version and actually thought the camera produced a better image. I wish there was more honest reviews like this and not just people out of " Idaho" saying it's great and probably making a comisson. I wish wish I would have paid the extra money and got the air 2

Mr. Idunno Idaho is one that will only point out the stuff he can't hide. Mostly he pretends not to notice as he plays dumber then dumb but watching how he fly's now about two years into this hobby on KZbin and he still can't make a stable drone do stable commands. Some just like to drop to their knees and swallow I guess. As for the 2018 version I think it was always too dark in image but as you see here that's easier to work with in editing. I originally was going to sell it after getting the 2020 but still holding on just in case.

I shot all the drone shots in this video using the 2018 Verizon. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGraqqd-nMRprtk I used log profile and put a lut on it. Lol I am not great at color grading. I followed your method today and shot manually with the 2020. Much appreciated! My clouds werent blown and I got a much better image. It would have been almost usable if not for the horizon tilt (I could probably zoom In a bit in post and rotate the image to correct this) What did you do in the editing process to to bring back your colors? Tyler Beaton Yes after applying a LUT with subtle changes I then just made small adjustments but often find auto fix does pretty good depending on how dark I start at.

Owned it for 2 weeks, 9 flights so far with tons of video, getting an hour of footage on 2 batteries and I have it max'd to 5km range and 500m height. 500m height no problem, i am getting maybe 2.5km range however i am in northern cal suburbia, i did buy the antenna extensions, super cheap but they do make a big difference in preventing it defaulting to "fail safe return" way too early. Sport mode is super fast and the gimbal is very good. Really good drone and i would rate well above the DJI mavic mini. Best drone on the market right now is Autel Evo 2, then the DJI mavic pro 2 .... .and I think this Fimi 2020 is a super close 3rd, maybe i got a good one based on other reivews. very very good value for $$$'s at $400 and very very wind capable, will post footage from Bodega bay and out at Farallon islands soon in tough conditions

Actually, I like the "dampening" quality of the keft and right pans...where it "over-travels" as you say. Sudden stops are jarring for the viewer, and seem like a security camera. For me, the dampening is a feature (perhaps unintended) that I was looking for. Really good zoom cameras will do that as well. They will ease in and ease out of the zoom, rather than stopping suddenly. Anyhow, color looks great. i just ordered one.

Great Job Chris, Hopefully Fimi was watching your assessment, They are getting closer to refinement, For 347 .00 dollar's, I think it's not a bad bird, Also for the amount of power, and how it can handel high winds, I hope they will fix the horizon and yaw over travel will be fixed, I bet if you would take a count, the amount of people who own this bird, it would definitely be more of any other Drone around the world, for the price for sure. Great video, your comments maybe valid. However when you look at all the other things the Fimi does, for example the SAR mode, the tripod mode, the speed adjustment in the app for beginners up to top speed of 16 Mtrs/ sec that's nearly 60km per hour or 38 mph. Also the safety feature of on loss of signal you can set it to hover or land or RTH. Anyway just giving the Fimi a thumbs up 👍 Oh nearly forgot 500mtr ceiling totally illegal btw. Cheers Steve

I don't think it's over-travel. It's the gimbal lagging behind the drone turn and gradually decelerating yaw after the turn stops. So it is perceived as turn lag from the FPV perspective in real time. I suspect this is deliberate because it makes video motion smoother. I suppose the presumption is that the drone is within LOS and the operator is controlling the turn by looking at the drone. Which is probably not helpful to videographers anyway. I also find it distracting when using the FPV for supplemental navigational guidance. I suppose if it didn't do something like this, there would be no purpose for the 3rd (yaw) axis of the gimbal because a quad can travel in arbitrary horizontal directions irrespective of yaw. (?)

Refreshing to see a meaningful assessment of the x8 2020. The color profile has definitely improved. Mine originally had a horrible purple hue. I am not holding my breath on a fimi fix for the horizon tilt. It was never fixed on 2018 and still exists on 2020. Thanks for not abandoning your fimi!

I read that purple hue was intentional as the pollution in China is bad and the purple hue corrected it.

I sold my X8 2020 and got a Mavic 2 Zoom complete different class of drone! I know the price difference is huge but il never go back from DJI now :) I had no end of connection issues requiring repeated re starts to get it to connect nearly every time I flew it and the horizon problem is a big one. Also my gimbal would have random erratic movements straight down while flying and ruined lots of footage. I could never get the smart track to work despite trying from every conceivable angle, I know it’s in beta but still come on how hard can it be! Also the app is rather annoying the way it doesn’t save any video settings when you shut it down. I may purchase a future model if they ever dramatically upgrade it as it is a lot of drone for your money despite the plethora of problems with it. Hopefully this helps someone on the fence about buying one and if so just forget about the smart modes none of them really work but when you do get it to behave it is very capable of some nice smooth 4K footage!

Agree. I was looking to upgrade my Bebop2 last year and went with the Fimi competitor the Zino. Ya I get the price but.... Got a Mavic Pro used and then the Mini. Done with the low end and all the issues that come with it. I know when I grab my bag the DJI drones will fly, the Zino well............. Good job on the Video Chris, you always show the Good and The bad and you actually have the Quad un like a certain Flying Turdbird..

Thanks very much for your thorough analysis, Chris. 👍👌 If you keep in mind that this drone is available for about 350 USD right now it is not bad, but I still prefer my 2019 Black Fimi X8. I also noticed some jello here and there, probably caused by the steep wind gusts you talked about. It is a pity that Fimi is not able to get their firmwares working smoothly, because the hardware for sure is capable of being a great drone. It is kind of a missed chance and a step back compared to 2018 version. They should improve their products and not downgrade. The only advantages are the better distance performance and the improved precision landing.

I understand and do keep that in mind for sure but it's a camera drone and when released you had a camera that was really bad and a gimbal that was tilted this way and every other way in flight. It needs to work better before I agree that for the price it's pretty darn good. For some this is all they can afford and they have to save up for it and then have to swallow you get what you pay for. You can calibrate the Gimbel to fix the horizon. And i found it does that in sport mode not as much in lower speeds. It stops good..

@@genefoxgreenmountaindroning It's pretty wide open and easy to get some range here if I stay between the mountains. As for the 6 sided calibration it is in the app under maintenance mode and then you click drone calibration. For most it is turned off and like me you will have to contact FIMI to have them turn it on. It's basically a IMU calibration.

Dude, my same drone did an uncommanded descent straight down onto a busy road yesterday. I had the last lat. long. on the APP and used that on Google Maps to get an idea of where it was along with a rough visual memory of where I saw it, north northwest of my house. The only reason I recovered my drone was the strobe was still flashing. The drone was damaged from the traffic and off to the side of the road. I'm reaching out to FIMI now to give them a chance to replace the malfunctioning drone. I also requested from my local police department if they were using laser around where I live because the entire time my son and I were driving around looking for it, my radar/laser detector was going off indicating it was detecting laser. I feel your pain.

I agree and I'm surprised at how excepting most people are of this issue. I understand it is a lower end on the scale of things but it's a 3 axis gimbal and it should work. There are some real crappy knock offs that have actual working gimbals so yeah it bothers me too.

You can fix you're turning overcompensation Problem by changing the gain and Expo sensitivity yaw both of them to 10.... I've been able to get pretty good clouds by changing the EV down to -7 and using Auto settings with HDR

Yes all of my videos are vivid HDR 4K high quality auto h265 and I usually set EV to - 3 or - 7 but play it by ear depending on the situation at hand.... the videos I have that exhibit a yaw compensation problem are my earlier videos before I figured out how to fix it..... also ironically, my latest video that you watched initially is my very first flight, the sky was blown out because EV was set to zero by default

To stop over-rotation (yaw) flick joystick to opposite direction then release as soon as it is pointed at your target. It stops dead on. Practice makes perfect.

Honestly, I could see if your using this drone for a business in photography and doing video documenties for $$$ it would be a issue for customers . But I've watched every possible video reviewer on KZbin of the fimi x8 se 2020 and I believe it's a hit and miss on when you bought this drone. When you buy this drone you just have to know going in what to expect and hope that the issues are going to be fixed in time. I'm still looking forward to buying mine soon and I don't expect to make money off my drones because it's all about relaxing and enjoying .

This is a first release batch and I see all the March vs May version is better etc and don’t by into believing it because I see the same quality in all of them video wise. I do believe it’s hit or miss if you’re referring to the fact that they screw a bunch up here and there like others do and Hubsan is the perfect example there. In this video it’s all in the camera settings and editing but had I used presets it would look like utter crap. Thanks and I hope you get a good one 🙏

Hi Chris, Thank you for doing the video. Very nicely done. Couple questions : Assuming that you left Gimbal Pitch, Gimbal Gain, and the Gain & Expo settings all to the default, would adjusting any of these settings help with turning to far left or right when you let off the sticks? You mentioned at the beginning of the video a six side calibration ? What or how do you do a six side calibration ? Thanks again

rpguy4 Yes it helps to adjust the settings but I wanted to show the issue first before doing anything to show how to make it easier. It shouldn’t be this way so I do what I do and put it out there unlike many. The six sided calibration needs to be unlocked to us it. I got mine unlocked when I had a issue with the original X8 and somehow it’s unlocked in this app version as well. Full IMU calibration accentually.

Q: The 2020 only comes in white, currently. Anyone else wonder if this is because they eliminated the cooling fan? (Black would absorb sunlight and heat up more than white). Just 5° can make all the difference.

CPL doesn’t fix the clouds. A ND filter is more likely but this camera needs manual adjustments more then anything. I played around with it a good bit and what I produced here is what I find most acceptable for what they are giving us with this camera. They blew it with this quad....

That sounds like you are using cinematic mode...When ever you make a turn or stop, it will over shoot by a few feet.

I use the anafi filters but you have to tape them on. There’s filters for this quad but all very generic.

I use manual settings on the darker side and then use a lut in my editing. I take the sd card out of the drone and plug it into my computer.

Thanks for your video. Do you think the yaw overshoot is actually overshoot or delay in video? I suspect that it is actually video lag. To me in the video it looked like delayed video compared to movement. If you have the drone close to you and flying, you can compare the movement of the drone vs the video feed.

It’s drone over travel. I tested it closer before making the claim but another thing is it looks like the gimbal is contributing to this as well. It’s very hard to see but when hovering right in front of me it looks like it over travels at times itself.

I think I know who this drone would be perfect for with that over travelling gimbal! There was a drone reviewer out of the Idaho area that seemed to have some issues with finger control on using his drone. I remember that drone would be bouncing all over the place. I'm on my 2nd x8 2020. First one had poor video quality, banggood replaced quickly. The second one has a large area of soft focus. Currently discussing with fimi support. Anyone else had this?

Such a shitty drone. I had the 2018 and it worked ok. I've had some of the same issues with my drone. Banggood told me to contact fimi customer support. I wanted this drone to work as it's supposed to

I don't get that it still travels? That might be a normal. The signal still has to get to the drone so when u let go it still gets the turn command and after the second it gets that its not turning.

When you let off the stick motors all do a job to stop what ever action it is doing. Some break real hard when you stop forward motion for instance and some come to a soft stop so this is the same thing in turning essentially. The difference between a hard stop and soft stop is firmware parameters. That being said this is a simple firmware parameter change that can fix this or one would think. Doesn't do it on my 2018 and never has but it did on my A3 so for me it's a FIMI thing. I have and have had so many quads over the years and this is something I think they could fix but like I said in the video I don't see many people even bringing it up. I see it in their videos but no mention of it.

I got this drone,that I get like a month ago...having a lot of issues with it. The drone over travel on the left stick too,issues with the horizon level,and big problem with the range not even 5,000 ft on open areas....contact the seller and they give me hard time with a solution.

I truly think the expectations are to high. This drone is not a dji. This is not the drone you buy for photography/ videographers! This is about but not as good as a Mini. You dont buy a pocket camera if your goal is for great photos and video, you buy a Nikon dlsr or better. I have this drone and didnt buy it with expecting awesome video and photos. I bought it for fun and thought cool there is 4k camera with a gimbal. If I was trying to ne a yourtuber wanting to make some $ I would be on the Mavic Pro! I have had no issues with my Fimi 2020!

I don’t think my expectations are high at all for this quad nor do I compare it to a higher end quad. I expect bugs and small issues but I expect the gimbal to function as it should and Im showing better video quality than your average user so I have been very fair in my reviewing of this quad. Most do not buy it just as a fun flyer alone. They want decent video to boot so you’re the rare buyer in my opinion. As a reviewer on a KZbin channel making money you buy as many as you can that are popular and you take offers to review what is popular. So along with the Mavic Pro 2 I have nearly all the top quads. Asking for a straight gimbal? 😂 Look if you’re happy with that congratulations but that’s not asking for DJI qualities. If you understood you would see I was showing what exists and I only compare quads to quads equal in their class. That’s what this is and you missed it. 👍

MazzifLOL A majority of people buying this quad go with the presets with the next majority doing what I just did and the least are using FLOG based on what you see in all the groups and channels. I may do a future video that way explaining it a little as I do it but honestly if I just get it close it’s a single LUT click in editing so not that big of a deal to me.
