@Bman No, an increase of 3dB represents a doubling of sound intensity: pulsarinstruments.com/en/post/understanding-decibels-decibel-scale-and-noise-measurement-units It is meaningless to compare "a concert is 109dB" and "a woman shouted at 121dB" because the distance at which sound is measured is essential to the reading. If you measure 121dB at 1m, then the same sound measured 2m away would be 115dB (a quarter of the intensity of the first measurement).

The word 'quiet' is both extraordinary and Quite Interesting because shouting it makes the maximum use of a human's noise-making machinery. All the pipes open up fully, and there are no awkward syllables to get in the way of a proper diaphragramatic exhalation. When I was in the 6th Form (as a kid in school), just after I'd been made a prefect [classroom helper] I once shouted for quiet so loudly that one 4th Form boy burst into tears, and one girl wet herself. Proudest day of my life! :-)

no, actually, it is not. I cannot picture a situation where you say quiet in a voice lower than those of whom you address, and get yourself heard. That you have to get loud to get yourself heard shows how quiet the place needs to be and how not quiet it is, hence the "quiet" yell. I don't think irony is the characteristic of causation and necessity because causation and necessity are expected. And things that are expected aren't ironic.

Loud voices. A camping area near home was flooding. Three meters left a dry spot where five camper vans were dry but a four wheel drive had drowned. Two police women were addressing all via the loud speaker in their van. My friend towed the drowned one to safety and prepared his large ford transit to ferry twenty-four to Maccars and refuge. He implored the ladies to interrupt their calling and inflated his 11.5 litre lungs and addressed the throng. So bloody loud all 24 immediately were seized in position, 50 metres away. They turned to look. He, knowing most were German, he added the word for hurry. They hurried. I saw that the police women had jumped, as they were close by but behind him. He said he had stopped a fight once, with the word stop! I believe him.

If I'm not mistaken decibels are a logarithmic scale, so every ten dB is more than doubling the power and amplitude. More than twice as loud as a Slipknot concert is respectably loud! Especially when you look at some common scales online and see chainsaw is more like 110dB, an ambulance closer to 120dB and a jumbo jet at full throat only twenty dB higher than she can shout, as the record is strictly for a shouted word, not a scream. Screams can be louder, I'd imagine her scream could raise the dead!

Isn't the human pain threshold around 120 decibels? So would that mean that 121 db is twice as loud as 120 db? And 120 twice as loud as 119 db etc?
@magichands1356 жыл бұрын
Viktor Ragnar Washuus If you continuously double the sound levels, you end up with insane amounts of noise. From what I know + 10db = 10 times as loud.
@viktorragnarwashuus81576 жыл бұрын
Magic Hands Yeah that's what I was thinking as well, but I know for a fact that the pain threshold is considered to be 120db, and Sandi mentioned that she would've been twice as loud as that, at 121. And as we know, all things said on QI is FACT. ;)
@magichands1356 жыл бұрын
Viktor Ragnar Washuus I think the treshold is debateable, Ive heard music where you can shout at the top of your lungs and not hear your own voice, Im pretty sure that's close to 130db, being close to gunshots, maybe 140db-ish now that is unbearable.
@Ferrastar6 жыл бұрын
Magic Hands it all comes down to how you define it. Say you have a 60dB sound level and said it had an intensity (power) of 1 and apparently loudness of 1. If you then got a 70dB sound level, in would have 10x the intensity (power) but it would only appear to be twice as loud
@areezzy6 жыл бұрын
Viktor Ragnar Washuus decibel is in logarithm scale, multiplied by 10. 2 times = 3 dB 4 times = 6 dB 10 times = 10 dB 20 times = 13 dB 40 times = 16 dB 100 times = 20 dB That is, 123 dB is twice as loud as 120dB, 130 dB is ten times as loud as 120 dB
