When you think about it religion is often like an addiction. I was raised JW by my mother who was a drug addict, she traded the drugs for a religion that gave her a similar feeling of euphoria when she did something perceived as correct in the eyes of God, or the elders. The Jehovah's witnesses really drill into you the NEED for a God, honestly if it were not for shows like this I probably would have fell into the same shit with some other religion. Because the feelings you get from being in a cult feel good! Until they don't just like drugs...I'm grateful that I was able to find you guys, so thank you for not only helping me transition out of a cult but also stay out of another one in search for answers that I would never get.

*"The Jehovah's witnesses really drill into you the NEED for a God"* Not just "a" god- THE God. Theirs. More accurately, the JWs drill into you the need for an *organization* that can give you access to god. Watchtower leaders are the intermediaries, and without them, access to the Sky Fairy is no bueno.

Weve got a kingdom hall where i live in Cornwall, uk. As an atheist in no danger of being 'recruited'; I do my community a service whenever they're out and about doing housecalls, by wasting as much of their time as possible at my door. @@4Mr.Crowley2 I've noticed a real trend among Christians and Muslims in claiming that some - or often all - other religions are all monotheistic. I think they seriously over-stretch in some examples. I can almost agree when they say it regarding Hinduism, but when they start saying it regarding ancient Egypt, Amazonian tribes, Paganism etc it all gets a bit false. (Egypt did have a sort of monotheism about the sun-disk but not for long). Their motivation, typically, is to try to use slightly odd philosophical spin to claim logical proofs of one driving force, with agency and a mind, predating everything. By trying to get atheists to also agree that other religions are monotheistic, they aim to prevent the atheist challenging them with "how do you know your religion is right and xxxxxxx religion is wrong" ... as their answer then is simply "they're ultimately worshipping my god."

I know this video is already 11 months old which in youtube-terms means it's practically ancient and forgotten by the algorithm at large. So though I doubt anyone will read this (least of all Dominic, the caller), I feel it is part of my duty as an Egyptologist (M.A) to rectify the misinformation that Dominic has built part of his world-view and beliefs on. The Ancient Egyptian did *not* a: believe in a "universal consciousness" nor did they b: believe in any personified or deified entity representative of a "universal consciousness". c: have a concept of "heaven" that in anyway pertains to the ideas of heaven seen in any of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). d: believe that the realm of the gods were divided into different dimensions. Also, the Ancient Egyptians were polytheists - they believed in many gods - several of them sharing characteristics with other gods. E.g. there never was *a* creator god - there were multiple. Thus, there were never *a* creation story - there were multiple. If you're going to build your world-view on something, at least you should know what that _"Something"_ is, and whether or not it comports with reality and the factual evidence. Thanks to the Internet, never before in history has it's been easier than it is at this very moment in time, to access information. You owe it to yourself, and to your fellow apes past, present, and future to make good use of that amazing gift that so many brilliant people have worked hard in order for you to take for granted. A lot of us (exJWs) have no issue with atheism, evolution, chemistry, etc., and among that sample I'd say you get a variety of faith-levels, so to speak. Personally, I was always very academically-minded and intelligent though, and I think that's all it really boils down to. The majority of JWs are simply unable to grasp even mildly complex concepts, because they believe they have no reason to explore science for answers, on account of their already thinking they have the ultimate answer. The result is their logic/comprehension skills never get developed, aka "that's too confusing for me, so it must be untrue", "If it was true it wouldn't need such a complicated explanation", etc

The audio production crew should balance the mic levels so Matt's mike isn't blasting and the phone call and other guy are not nearly as loud. The audio mixing could be better. Thanks.

I do feel sorry for Dominic. Its extremely likely he was home schooled or brought in a JW educational setting and as a very closed cult they don't teach people to think sceptically and/or to easily determine junk science/info from good. They don't don't want followers to question doctrine, its all about obeisance. Once leaving the closed intellectual world of the Jehovah's Witness community without having having any real modern educational intellectual tools (He makes a passing reference to this early on in the clip) to tell well researched concepts and ideas from the bizarre. As JW beliefs are based on some esoteric takes on an already odd mythical standard Christianity he was pretty well setup to fall down into the modern hole of 'spiritual esotericism' thinking. I think in some of these instances, callers like Dominic could be shown more an empathic response on call in shows, where he is asked why he ended up thinking well outside modern scientific norms. I found in the US when living there, that there are a lot of people like Dominic who are as much victims of a reglious upbringing combined with a poor general education (both formal and informal) who end up down some very odd intellectual rabbit holes. Generally found a non confrontational conversation about how they got to a belief system and what tools they have or don't have can be a a real 'break' to people's thinking. For instance the stuff Anthony Magnabosco is doing I think is having a more positive effect than these call in show do.

I think you're right about Dominic and how these people lack sufficient reasoning and skepticism skills but I don't think the hosts are doing a bad job. Everyone has their different takes and methods. Anthony is great and really fleshes out the other person's pov. Jimmy is rational and approachable and Matt just wants to get to the meat of the issue and sort it out asap. They're all good ways and can help different people.

I'm fascinated that asking the first question, and that's which god? That question always seems to befuddle a theist. As if all humans only know of one god. Even the bible acknowledges that people believe in other gods. This conversation is doomed from the start.

I sometimes wonder what it must be like being the host on any of these call in shows, and then I remember what happened last time I tried to reason with someone who’s addiction was more important than reality. Suffice to say, always make sure you’re in a safe environment when you begin a discussion about a sensitive topic.

I recognised some of what Dominic was talking about. Basic theosophy. The Hermetica and The Emerald Tablet. New age spiritualism. Literally just nonsense that people choose to believe to make themselves feel special and important because they are in on the secret. I dont think he was expecting to get torn apart so thoroughly as he thought he had secret knowledge.
