To all who yearn for an "authentic" interpretation, what is "authentic", and by whose standards? Certainly not by Handel's, as he has been dead for 255 years! This is being played on a modern violin with a modern bow by a modern artist. I feel Szeryng's interpretation is just as valid as any other, and I think if Handel were here to witness it, he would be pleasantly amazed by the tone and projection of the modern instrument, and by the artistry of Mr. Szeryng!

This was one of my final jury pieces for 1st yr. University (alto sax). Hearing this recording back then would have been immensely enlightening and informative for me. It's amazing how similar the violin and alto sax are. The richness of the varied vibrato is intense on both. I also love how he throws away the metronome completely! A very moving performance.

no modern or even philological interpretation can claim to possess the Truth .. the wonder of music is to offer a complete freedom of interpretation every time in every moment ... like the water that takes the shape of the forms in which it flows ..it can be beautiful from a prospective as another one..it offer BEAUTY..just this.
As a violinist and poet who had heard Mr. Szeryng's play with mature poetic mastery this Handel sonata I played as an adolescent. BZ Niditch

This sonata is a very difficult one but needs a free spirit to hear its depth as in this fine interpretation and recording.

Although this performance is considered to be "old fashioned" nowadays, the beauty of his playing is stunning. Thank you for posting !

please explain to me: what in this performance is considered "old fashioned" ?

@@fleischger53 The comment refers to the wide current that tries to play the music in the way it was interpreted in the epoch it was composed. This includes the instruments. In this case, the bow and the strings. This trend is prominent in the Netherlands.

Wowowow I love this interpretation! It's fantastic. I'm playing this in my senior recital and I'm definitely wanting to use harpsichord. I wasn't sure since I'm playing it on my modern violin and not my baroque, but it's actually quite nice!

Just beautiful...thanks very much for this post. HS really lightens and softens his vibrato, which seems just right here. I only wish the recording set-up in those days didn't mike the violin so close at the expense of the keyboard. I know it was the convention, but I myself would like to hear the harpsichord more clearly. Dreyfus was a very fine musician.

Bravo, I will have my orchestra students look this up to listen to in order to hear how this violin sonata should sound.

Wunderbar, perfekt.

To be honest I like to to be played in an authentic way! Nonetheless a great violinist.

who tells you how the " authentic " way should sound ? So called " experts " with scientific approach, but no sense for the beauty of sound !

@pedrovelasquez99698 жыл бұрын
