Just to be clear, in front of the gate it was not centurion, it was optio (2nd in command).
@AJKecsk3 жыл бұрын
The centurion is the guy with the colorful transverse crest who walks in right at the end, after the battle. The guy in the bronzed scale armor with the white feather crest is the optio. Though I'm surprised, usually it would be the centurion at the very forefront of the action, not walking in once it was over.

Did you noticed all that logistical problems, constant awareness and checking of of their surroundings, all that exchange of information and coordination among soldiers? And also that general lack of information on both sides? The centurion didn't know for sure what they are going to meet until they were there. And if there would be an enemy army just a few hours away, they would have no idea that they are going into a trap. Does this video have any backstory? I can imagine that this is a scouting party from some legion marching behind entering a new teritory. These soldiers maybe didn't even know that they are going to find a ford there. And local population may not know for several more days that there is a Roman army already capturing their settlements one by one. I really appreciate all that details together create so accurate depiction of that period of time.

My dad and his friends once, when they was 7 in the 60's, found behind home in the center of the town (built right up, and in the old Roman town, there are even old temples who become churches, the more complete an old ceres temple turned into a st. Peter church unfortunately was razed to ground by an earthquake in the 50' but the front still intact its right behind my home, while the cathedral was built in high middle age over another temple) , in a garden, several late Roman coins. They was buried on purpose, but the owner never returned to take bake them, and the ground slowly pushed them up in the centuries, it was on a hill where the town is built near the sea. Now these coins are in a museum if I remember good but there are several peoples who kept one or two in town like souvenir. (legally, in Italy, the only thing you can keep from an archeological finding are money.)

yea because jumping in 1 by 1 into the walls is not a recipe for disaster.
@Nitrousoxidification3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size on the force and the defending garrison. At Alesia the Gauls attempted small actions to jump over Caesar's walls to attempt to dismantle them or open the gates, the Romans also broke into Celtic hillforts in Britain by sending contuburniums around the main force to seize the walls from the other side whilst the celtic forces were defending from the main assault. Historically speaking, in a siege assault (which were notably rare) simply seeing the enemy having control of one side of the walls could be morale shattering enough to surrender. Fort garrisons were usually small and knowing the walls had been breached was effectively your game over.

D-despite common belief, brute strenght and aggression is the basic element of mele, with moment of surprise they form basis for CQB till this day.
