To have mice dead in one location it appears you may have a snake getting in and out. The mice appear to have been regurgitated. I can only guess why the snake regurgitated the mice, maybe the birds attacked the snake and when this happens snakes regurgitate what's in their stomach to make escape easier. The holes in the ground is maybe where the snake is getting in and out.
@Selfsufficientme5 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a plausible explanation... I can't rule that out. Perhaps a small snake followed the mice into the hole and ate them then found their way into the pen couldn't get out and as you say regurgitated the mice to get smaller and then got back out. Even more, the reason why I need to seal any holes just in case!

I used to keep quails in a small orchard/food forest enclosure (it had 3 full grown fig trees in it). Planted all my veggies in there once they were taller than the quails and then the quails kept all the bugs off. They also cleaned up any fruits we didn't get to before they fell. Had chickens in the yard around that who were trained to be mousers, and turned over our compost pile for us whilst getting their fill, and a great big meat rabbit who kept all the neighborhood cats out. Had no idea quails could be mousers as well!

@liveonthesun33685 жыл бұрын
You should set up a motion camera to record it for when it happens again. From the way all the quails have cornered themselves to the opposite corner of the cage, the snake theory seems more plausible. In any case a video of the Event would be awesome.

Also last year we had a rat taking up to 15 finches & Canaries a night. Obviously as they slept. We eventually found a huge pile of dried finches & Canaries just outside the Aviary Hidden under a shrub. The count was over 100 birds in the pile. So I think some rats kill for fun cos they weren't even partly eaten. Also the rat was dead & dried beside the pile. Looked like some kind of Necrotic Harem.

That's why it's best to build a coop on a concrete slab, 1 foot deep for the deep bedding. I had plenty of chicken coop in my childhood and the main problems were rodents killing the bird and eating the eggs and termites destroying the coop. Until the chicken are big enough, they're preys. That's why my next coop will have a concrete base. Chickens do kill mice, rats and snakes but quails are known to be more ferocious.

Field & hill dwelling mice can tunnel underground. My late husband was a certified, licensed exterminator. His expertise....mice, rodents, etc. We burned a hill down, in a control burn, and you could hear the mice screaming, in their dens, as they burned. Got rid of a huge problem in our neighborhood. We had an acre, that they were living in. We did it to "brush clear" and make it safer for our chickens, as snakes go underground too.

I wonder why you don't bury the mice at the drip line of one of your fruit trees. Free fertilizer and no flies. I generally set a stepping stone on top of the grave so nothing digs the carcass up.

Quails do sometimes work as a team in a rare occasion once a blue tongue broke in eating my button quail brooding her eggs and tried to peck at its head until it grew a lil bigger came back and the birds had no choice to surrender to it, as for tiny mice I seen one peck one on the head trying to steal its feed the mouse flipped on its back for a second squeaking then ran away... imagine the whole 6 attacking at once. I killed 3 already by swatting them with my bear hands and been told as long as they are not poisoned mice they are good feed for the quails or chooks (FYI my quails are button quails not Japanese but their temperaments are nasty when they are threatened)

You may have thrown the dog a meal. Free range hens eat mice whole, quite entertaining seeing the athleticism of the hunter trying to keep her prey from the other hens. It wouln’t have been the end of the world leaving the dead mice as the maggots would be good tucker for the quail.

Dude, if your quail are killing mice go with it, what they have done once they will do again, practice makes perfect right, they may get good enough at it to tackle rats too eventually resolving any further issues with both rats and mice. These species are tiny winged dinosaurs so encourage such behaviour where ever possible.. its in their best interests for them to learn to defend themselves effectively..

The rats live in the ground, inside. and the ground is being turned with dogs running after the rats and killing them right away. Hundreds in a couple of hours.I think it is the most efficient way to keep the farm clean. You cant fill all the holes.
