Just found the channel and I must say it's lovely. Putting excess money and developing self-sufficient methods like what you have in the coming years. Saves money + less reliance on others is always great relief.

It makes perfect sense to me when you talk about your poultry along with your garden. Keep doing it. When you get ready to have quail for dinner, not only is it fresh; but, you can season it with fresh herbs from the garden and have vegetables on the side that also come from the garden. Seems like a win/win situation. The more you can produce at home, the less you have to purchase from the store.

Your quail look just like my 6 week old chicks. Lol cute! Good job rigging the feeder! I love it when a plan comes together! I grew up in a farm and now live on it. I have taken so much "junk" dad kept around bc it was still good piece of this or that and made stuff for the garden and chicken run etc. I made a chick brooder out of an old consol tv/stereo/record player! I love using excess "junk" without throwing it away and saves so much money! Got lucky, I guess.

I just love that you repurposed something nearly useless. My garden is full of such items..old crock pot cooker turned into plant pot, old walker into a bean trellis, old hockey net into a bean tower....I made an old futon frame into an asparagus bed, literally...and the list goes on.

Always appreciate your insights. Just bought the Olba Feedomatic and plan on raising it off the ground so the treadle works as a roost and any spilled feed now has the headspace for the chickens to clean under. We'll see how it goes. I'm going to use your brick on the treadle with it on the ground to train them, then remove the brick, then raise the height.

Hey Mark, to make this feeder even better, you could put a 1/2" peace of plywood scrape over the boards you have now. Make indents on the bottom to accommodate the screws you have in the boards and tack it down with some finish nails. That would prevent poo and stuff from getting in any cracks or seams from the boards and make the top smoother to clean it off. :-)

Great vid Mark. I love recycling stuff for my poultry too. I mostly raise chickens ( I have over 300 of them) and Sebastopol geese, but recently got a couple male quail and am waiting for a lady a town over to have a few females ready to sell me. The quail are neat little birds. I actually found your channel a few years ago because of the quail vids and discovered the gardening content because of that. I'm an avid gardener so a channel that has content about 2 of my favorite things is a great channel to me! Thanks for the great content!

I have same feeder and put a piece of ply on top to stop food falling through. I certainly don't see so much food falling out...you have more chickens than my 4. Mine is a slightly different version to yours as doesn't have the yellow piece that you pulled out. It looks like the space where the food comes out the shoot is bigger than mine too. I love this feeder and since I switched I use less feed as the birds cannot steel it

I'm happy for you that you have been able to modify your expensive, ineffective free chicken feeder into a satisfactory or even excellent quail feeder. What could make many DIY quail keepers happy is possibly some guidance in making a feeder rather than paying up for an expensive inefficient chicken feeder to convert. Perhaps a diagram illustrating the relative positions of the various components of the quail feeder that proved useful, for example, a scale cross-sectional sketch with some measurements would be excellent guidance, with relative height and angles of the quail standing platform, the barrier separating quail from the feed, food height and the base of the hopper above which the feed is stored. I absolutely would not be prepared to pay up for an expensive inefficient chicken feeder to convert.

Hi Mark, Thank you so much for your beautiful Video and demonstration 😍 I Used to have Quails in the past and stopped keeping them on a fine morning, when I realized that the feed I was giving them was not suitable for egg consumption for humans. It contained Growth Hormones and Chemicals which were added for the growth of young chickens and pullets. I was told by a reputed pet shop in Melbourne, to give Starter feed of chicken, to my Quails which was really a bad advice ! What feed are you giving your quails as I really wanted to start keeping Quails again only if I can feed them a Safe to Human feed. Thanks in advance 😊

I use these feeders myself, I know what you mean about the spilt food, but if you raise them off the ground and use mesh under the plate, the chickens are then able to eat the dropped food, failing that you can buy (or make) an insert that stop the chickens splashing the food everywhere, this seems to minimise the wastage, and it stops rodents for sure.
