QuakeCon 2001 Grand Final: ZeRo4 vs Fatal1ty - Quake 3 Arena Duel t4 ztn 4k 1080p

This is the Quake 3 Arena Grand Final of QuakeCon 2001, held in August of that year. The finalists are John "ZeRo4" Hill (USA) and Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel (USA).
I could only find two demos of the Grand Final, the first map featuring the POV of ZeRo4 and the second one the POV of Fatal1ty.

+Braeden Loepke I found my old DVD's from the early/mid 2000's the other day. A total of 21GB of Quake 3 OSP demos. Practically every game from every tournament from many different POV's. Eurocups, WCG, C58 invitationals as well as Jolt League and Barrysworld demos. Problem is I can't get Shadowplay to record OpenGL in Quake III. So I can watch them but I can't record with Shadowplay. What is the best way to record them? I would upload them all over time if I knew (and if it's easy).

Lidistus I don't have a desktop recording option in the UI in Shadowplay. I used to have the option last year when I owned a GTX970, but then I moved over to AMD for a while. Having recently got a GTX980 and installed Geforce Experience again, I don't have an option to enable desktop recording now! :/

TheVanillatech Well there are two things i would suggest at this point. Either the Loilo Game Recorder (I havent used this one much but it pushes out good quality) or OBS.

Lidistus I need something free and easy to use. I have a LOT of demos worth uploading and I don't have time for tinkering. I'll try to uninstall my driver and geforce experience and download the latest versions. Maybe my update function is broken. It has been acting strange in the system tray for a few weeks now I think about it.

I'm new to watching Quake videos, but from what it looked like, ZeRo4 had better aim and map knowledge, while Fatal1ty had better movement. Is that an accurate assumption?

i played hundreds of hours on the ztn3tourney map and I can tell that Zero4 knows the map much better than fatality. Fatality goes into a whole bunch of "killbox" spots

Zero4 was one of the first "positional" players. While his aim was insane, he understood the maps very well and "invented" tricks that were adopted by everybody else, like feinting movement using jumpers, opening doors with a bullet just to make a distracting sound, etc. This helped tons against Fatality, who was an uber defensive player that just hid in the map searching for spots to kill the opponent easily, few could read this defensive playstyle, but Zero4 did. Fatality movement needed to be excellent because of that, he'd jump from spot to spot trying to always be in the defensive, Zero4 would just look for his opponent playing mind games.

@2:12 the moment that renamed this map from Q3-Tourney4 to Q3-Zero4 edit: my most favourite mat (no camping like DM6), where game was heading could have changed in 5 seconds, and while having a good day, I could dominate with 60% railgun. edit2: love how Zero for died while his body fell on MEGA ... I forgot this moment.

snzStorm I don't believe, the last championship he won was in 2006, but in 2001 was one of the best with Zero4, Aim, Socrates and someone else

snzStorm Fatality dominated in his time. He was light years ahead of the competition, and his talent was so high he could adapt to any FPS game and dominate that within a matter of weeks, which of course he did. The problem with Quake 3 was it has the highest skillcap of any game ever, and it attracted the best FPS players from the world over. When Fatal1ty realised he was going to have to work harder to keep on top he took the easy option and changed game. That is why he is a millionaire. No one can doubt his skill. He used cross jump straffe, didn't have any weakness and had incredible aim and game awareness. But Zero4 is just a mean motherfucker, and was reknowned for being almost unbeatable on T4. Unkind was the only player to come close to beating a prime Z4 on that map. That was an amazing game, they warmed up on it in a practice for about 15 which really built up the tension, before taking a game. It was great to watch.

Its a demo, which is basically just a file that has all the movement, shooting etc. recorded and you can play it back. basically an interactive video. since its not a videofile he can play this back at any resolution he wants and change camera angles etc.

He didn't spawn at the railgun side, he wouldn't be going through middle of top floor with just plasmagun ... sound of upper door openning ... obvious move from Zero4. Don't forget, this map is Pro-Q3Tourney4 ... commonly known as Pro-Q3Zero4.

Also, you can hear him taking the jump pad up to top floor. As he walked into the central chamber, he knew that his opponent heard him enter the room, and that it was likely he was gonna peek. It was an educated guess that led to a shot he was ready to make. Opportunity = skill + luck!

Hope you're sarcastic. These were LAN games in the Quakecon, in the competition computers, with on site referees checking players screens at all times. It was absolutely impossible to use hacks.

Fatal1ty got destroyed. I dont remember z4 being this good but he just dominated. Fatal1ty missing easy jumps, rail shots, item timing... surprised he made it to the finals. memories tho

Zero4 changed the game, is not that he was this good, dude changed the meta on his own, literally. He was like the first pro player feinting and playing positionally rather than trusting it all on his aim while playing defensively. Many of the things he did were adopted by everybody else, even the russians.

Fat rolled Zero4 at first, but Zero was the first player to really learn his opponents, and he learned Fatality too. I still wish Fat had stuck around or returned to Live, the guy is still great at the game i watched him stream QL a few months ago and he was just casually hitting 360 rails to finish CA matches which were basically just the entire other team trying to frag him for the clout.

That's why i don't understand why Fatality is the greatest player of all times. He sucked in q3 and jumped to unreal/doom/etc. When he sucks he jumps to an another discipline where no more strong opponents are

@@miguelpereira9859 Nonsense. Fatality was someone with the raw skill to be better than 99% of players at a new game out of the gate. He would master a game mechanically and win, and then look for the next big thing rather than hold off the inevitable people that will totally master the game with years and years of practice. Both of those things are admirable in their own way. But i really miss there being a guy like Fatality in existance. Nobody nowdays is winning in multiple games at the pro level like he did.

But it is true that stepping into Quake now is alot different than stepping in when it was new. The skill gap the old players hold is massive.
