Carmack said id was the best place for him to be working, with the best things to be working on.... until Oculus showed up. If you read Masters of Doom, it's clear that his greatest aspiration was making virtual worlds like reality. No wonder he jumped ship like the wind.

I think what the original poster is referring to is the split in the game playing community between the 'casual' and 'hardcore' (the latter term is still subject to change and causes friction internally amongst this group). It's an artificial split really, but for the people that regard themselves as 'hardcore' gaming really IS a lifestyle choice, it's an activity that defines them as much as religion, music, occupation, etc.

So many concerned fans about the direction of the company and unfortunately the fears seem to have come true. Carmack the chief engine programmer left the company and Bethesda has acquired the company. While some things were done right in Doom and Quake Champions, there was a ton of things that was poorly implemented. Doom's terrible menu and interface left many people frustrated. The lack of customization comes to mind. For example the infamous mouse delay in Doom which seem to be unfixable. When it comes to Quake Champions, many things were done right, but unfortunately so many things were done poorly too. I get that a company has to make money on it's en devours, but seeing how Quake 4 was left in the dust and disappointed in terms of it's multiplayer play ability, you would think that the company would do it right with their next Quake iteration. Quake is a gem, a precious one at that. And to see one of the few companies that held on to their integrity for as long as ID did, eventually giving in to the big bad corporations is to me heart felt.

Oh and Carmack has outdone himself a shit-ton of times. Outside of creating a genre, he optimized an engine similar to Mario for PC (for smooth screen-scrolling), he utilized texture mapping, and done plenty for revolutionizing lighting in games. Not to mention rocket-building as a hobby. What are Zuckerberg's hobbies?

He really have smart things to tell to the people.Its a shame that I don't have the ability to visit QuakeCon, even I am not that fanatic fan of ID, but I appreciate their contribution to the genre and game industry itself.I remember that I first heard of them during my school computer classes ,I guess it was 1999 or 2000, they were demos of Doom and Doom 2, they were that first games I ever played on PC.

The problem with consoles is with the publishers that are in it solely for the money, like activision; and the console companies themselves who limit game design and capability so much.
@FourtySixx13 жыл бұрын
i know they have to look after consoles for sales, but pc's are more potentially powerful. i understand that some people like the easy run around with a xbox 360 or a ps3 but the power of a pc is much more overwhelming. But it cost more. So cost for a near experience from the best?, well that's up to the user.. illl stick to 3 580's

You people babbling about what you read here and there about John Romero should at least make the effort to hear his side of the story. Look up "Matt Chat" with John Romero from 51 to 55. He tells the whole story of ID and it's pretty awesome. It won't solve the mystery, they will always be the only ones to know what happened, but it's too easy to just go "Romero is a selfish bastard" when all you know is what has been the buzz on the net. Also, Romero had tons of talent regardless of Daikatana.

@KoRL12 lol leaving id software after making such a huge hits, saying to his "fans" that "romero is about to make you his bitch", using the same engine that carmack made he makes daikatana in few years after leaving id software and it totally sucked. Instead he could of kept on working with carmack and make even more jaw dropping games. Romero was just selfish bastard. even if I give credit to him for doom and quake, carmack was the one who brought the technology of PC gaming :]
@rockworm50312 жыл бұрын
I find all the John Romero comments amusing. Apperantly Daikatana made some people his bitch after all.
@TheKSProduction11 жыл бұрын
Romero didn't help at all with Quakes code. Quake is there only good game that is alive today. All John Carmack their. Number one competitive game. But...I like Willits, as he made most of the maps for their games. And they're good maps. Romero was mostly doom stuff. But they did good without him. Still are IMO. I am nervous for Doom 4 though. After seeing Rage. Also Hollenshead did quit id Software recently. I never thought he did much for the company except talk about them in interviews lol.
