Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am a PhD student and have felt for a long time that everyone was throwing around these terms but never really explained them, and trying to search for answers always required me to understand a whole load of other words that no one had ever explained during my prior 2 degrees. This video has finally made it click for me and I really appreciate you having taken the time to make this!

As a PhD student this has been helpful. Especially as I start off my program - often it feels like it is assumed students know this these things hence they are under explained so I appreciate that this helps clarify and make sure I know I'm having the right understanding.

A great explanation, thank you very much. I have a question after listening to your lecture. Can we assume that positivist approach is quantitative design or method of research and interpretivism is qualitative?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
positivism and interpretivism are indeed often associated with quantitative and qualitative designs , respectively. However, there still may be a qualitative study that leans towards positivism, so this is not to say that this would be completely impossible

I'm afraid I don't know Ken, I'm not That smart! :) I have never heard about this one. I suppose it depends on whether it is an overall philosophy or one of the -isms. If it's the former, it is ok to say that your views draw from both Interpretivism and Anti-Essentialism, if that is the case. Remember that, at the end of the day, you are talking about Your worldview. If you convincingly demonstrate what that worldview is, it would be very hard for someone to criticize it or argue that these 2 do not match each other. This is my advice, I wish I could help more !

Thanks Dr for the explanation, well i have question regarding mixed method approach, May i know what research paradigm is for MM? If positivism is objective, interpretivism is subjective, while MM is the combination of those two approach?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 4 жыл бұрын
This is a very good question, and one that has been causing a lot of debate, so there is definitely no way to answer it briefly and quickly, but other worldviews have been suggested to be more suitable here, such as realism or pragmatism. Pragmatism, for example, is a very practical paradigm aimed at doing "whatever works" in a given situation, and it is thought to be a flexible combination of beliefs traditionally characteristic to both interpretivism and positivism. However, as I said, to understand the situation better I would suggest you to do some reading on the current debates (but only if you have to - to me, these debates are mostly a waste of time)

Qualitative Researcher Many thanks for the replied Dr, I asked my methodology courses lecturer before but i still didn't understand it. I'm aware of "read more", however here is the problem.. the more i read the more i get confused-(Maybe i was not on the right path). That is why i always scrolling a reliable explanation about research methodology on youtube. Keep on sharing this precious knowledge because your videos really help me preparing for my proposal defense soon! Wish me luck! 😊

very good at easy grasping explanation. But your angle ( camera view- high angle) is totally disturbing to attention. So, I suggest why do not you use a law angle camera or just a medium shot angle. think about the audience-oriented communication on video communication. other than that this is very very helpful. go on. salute.
