Great memories.

A classic defensive game, one of my favorite Bear victories of the Ditka era. The Bears hold a championship offense to 9 points (only 7 scored against the defense) in a brutal game that saw both defenses at their very best with the five Hall of Fame defensive players in the game (Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Ronnie Lott, and Charles Haley) all showing why they belong in the Hall. The game has an incredible end where both teams go for it on 4th down only to fail, and Dave Duerson makes a play to remember to win it for the Bears.

I remember during the '88 NFC championship vs the Bears, Madden was saying that Bill Walsh blamed himself for this loss on MNF. Walsh said he was so concerned about the pass rush and game planned his backs and TE'S to block on most of the plays. As a result Joe had limited options in the passing attack. Notice how everything builds to the kickoff and opening series - no TV timeouts to destroy the momentum. Note the pace of the game is enhanced with *fewer* cutaways and replays. Good game. Especially for a low scoring, defensive dominated affair. As a 49ers fan, I have to credit the Bears defense for their effort in stifling the 49ers offense especially in the run game. Craig had an all pro season that year, and they completely shut him down. Of course when the 49ers decided to go to the air, Montana was under constant pressure with 4 sacks, and a zillion hurries/knockdowns. Still, the 49ers had chances to win it. Dropped passes, dumb penalties, and Joe seemingly not 100% due to injury contributed to the loss. That must have been a long flight back to San Francisco, in particular when as a player you know the NFC West crown was going to be difficult to obtain with the Saints and Rams make it a tight race. At least the defense showed up. Obviously it all worked out a couple of months later for the 49ers.

To this day, I will NEVER understand why the Rams didn't hurry there; if they would have gotten straight to the line, gotten a play off, and then called a timeout, they would have been in an excellent position to kick a field goal at the end of the half to possibly break the momentum that Chicago had at that point. Check it out for yourself. In the same way, is it POSSIBLE that San Francisco cost themselves a chance to win the game by not being a little more hurried, given that they had no timeouts left at this point in the game? Those teams from 85 to 88, it was just pure defense that held the Bears together. The offense usually did enough to score, but it was defense this game. The problem is that from 86 to 88 in the playoffs, the offense especially with no QB the Bears were just sitting ducks for the Redskins and 49ers. If you can't score essentially more than 17 points in the playoffs as an offense, you aren't winning and advancing. In 1988, the Bears again were held together by the defense and McMahon couldn't stay healthy again. The worst part is that McMahon had a high winning percentage and from 1984 to 1988 he was 36-5 when he started. With that record, you would usually have multiple rings. For McMahon all those hits he took finally bit him in the ass. Now he's living in Arizona with CTE symptoms.

The NFL peaked, yes, peaked in the 80s. The big sports issues of steroids and coke, gambling, and crimes covered up were there and soiled the reps of athletes, what purity of pure competition existed, that was not scripted or predetermined for gambling reasons is still debatable, especially in light of the book Interference that came out in 89. But no one doubts the coverage and look of the NFL in the 80s was legit, hitting, most referees were not controversal, especially when instant replay came in, and the league had addressed issues that had caused the strikes in 82 and 87. No dout the execs in charge of the league decided the 90s wpild be the last decade of decent football before it became too obvious it was just for fantasy fb and online gambling, which waters down the competition period. It was bad enough before that sure but rise of the internet and digital life and the decline of the product on the field are there. And before you say it, yes, free agency and salary cap in 92 and 93 were aweful, yes aweful for the league as a whole, not to mention the decline in MNF by the early 00s. This is a game for strong men, not wimpy, simpy, frosted hair weirdos who cry when they get as good as they give. Ohh, and who gives a flip about the Arizona Cardinals when they should have stayed in St. Louis, same with Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders, Rams never leaving LA, no new teams in 95, etc...they ruined the awesome vibes from 80s NFL

@1:31:48 replay of safety. love Dierdorf as commentator, but there are other explanations. 1. cannot get the ball off-the play called for the long pivot set up by the QB and by the time he was setup the rush was on hi. That slow motion time is misleading and QB correctly assessed that he lacked the time to throw across his body-QB could not throw to his right or middle, which would be quicker because defender was there. 2. McMahon looked down field and thought a quick throw would be a quick INT. In either case, 1 or 2, holding on to the ball prevents a possible turnover for a TD, so the sack and safety minimizes the risk. of course, McMahon does all this in a split second and it was the right decision. It was a great play by Haley-and Haly did not provide the time to react.

The ego that's overlooked belongs to 49er coach ("The Genius"), Bill Walsh. You might suspect that Walsh, after declaring himself finished with the game, would be grateful to the legendary Paul Brown for coaxing him out of retirement to become the successful QB and offensive coach for his new franchise team (the Cincinnati Bengals). But when Brown retired at the end of the '75 season without appointing Walsh as his successor, Walsh was fit to be tied--angry, bitter, confused, and (in his words) "humiliated." Immediately he left Cincinnati for the W. Coast, taking his films of Ken Anderson running his inventive offensive formations, with one goal in mind: "Revenge." He felt that, after his 8-years' worth of work in producing a competitive team for head coach Brown in the "dead ball" division dominated by the tough defense of the Steelers, he deserved promotion to head coach with complete control of all personnel decisions. In a few years he would prove that Paul Brown had greatly underestimated his talent (or perhaps Brown was all too aware of Walsh's insatiable ambition?). In any case, as he had done in the Bengal-49er Super Bowl following the '81 season, Walsh would again beat up on the Bengals, who seemed more defenseless now than after the '81 season, when Anderson outpassed Montana by almost 2 to 1 yet came up 5 points short in the Super Bowl. But first the Bears, these deluded mini-monsters of the midway. In one of his 5 self-promotional books the facile, smooth-talking Walsh demonstrates the limitations of Ditka. As Walsh walks across the field with him after a game, all Iron Mike can think to talk about is the accomplishments and limitless potential of his own players, bragging about how they would blow the league apart for years to come. Then Walsh describes McMichael and another Bear player at the beginning of this '88 play-off game. The two Bear players strut out onto the field bare-chested (in a -26F chill factor) and stand on their goal line staring downfield at their California visitors--a clear gesture of intimidation, as if saying, "You're not fit." You can bet that the 49ers, not the Bears, would be popping the corks of chilled champagne to celebrate their victory in barren, frozen, voluminous Soldier Field in.frigid Bear weather..The Bears, on the other hand, were probably consoling themselves, after the indignity of the 49er slaughter, with hot baths and warmed-up brandy, all the while wondering, why did I get involved in football? Meanwhile, Iron Mike is still in the Bear locker room, taking a cold shower while hitting his head against the wall, muttering: "WTF went wrong? Shall I bring back "The Fridge"?

Idk if it's overlooked. Many have described Walsh as one who behaved as though he invented the sport.

DITKA had an ego bigger than the city itself. Everybody in WALSH'S position has some sort of ego, difference being WALSH didnt let that get to his head. WALSH at least stayed with what most NFL coaches know is true. He wouldn't of started Doug Flutie in 86. DITKA didnt have the eye for mid game strategy that WALSH did. When u have a team like they did in 85 u dont need it either. His in ur face attitude gets worn after a while
