**WARNING** After some unfortunate incidents by users I'm going to put this warning and disclaimer up. DO NOT attempt to transmit without the proper precautions in place. Transmitting 5W of RF energy centimetres away from a PC can LITERALLY destroy it, it's almost like an EMP at that distance. Get your antenna away from the PC.

Ah yes, well even though I have made a cable myself, I'm not BigClive or MrCarlson. It's pretty bodged together and my soldering is worse than an infant could manage. I'm hoping someone else with more practical skills than I will do one.

This is absolutely GENIUS!! I have often wondered if something like this could be done. Now we know lol. My one question is, with this firmware can the radio still be used without being connected to the PC? Like if I want to just take it with me at a particular time and don't have my Windows tablet with me. 😎

Yes, the radio will function without being connected to the PC just as a normal egzumer flashed radio.

This is the kind of graphical interface used at my aerospace company. Absolutely brilliant! Got it to display on my windows PC, just need some guidance on audio out... any guidance on obtaining audio on my PC would be greatly appreciated. How do I create the audio cable folks are talking about?
@ingeborgsvensson48968 ай бұрын
Very clear video. I am still waiting for my K5 to arrive so I cannot try it out for myself yet but do I understand correctly that your firmware includes the egzumer firmware, you just built your PC interface around it? If so, is there a need to do a factory update first or can I directly install Quensheng Dock straight out of the box?
@nicsure8 ай бұрын
The firmware is a modified fork of egzumer, it is required on the radio for the docking software to work.

Any sign this is going to get ported back into mainstream egzumer? I'm using the joaquim for messaging functionality and wouldn't want to sacrifice that....but it's basically a small mod on top of egzumer...so if this is incorporated into the main firmware there's a chance we'll get both. My understanding is that the available memory is the big limiting factor. Version I'm using uses 88% of the available memory according to my flasher. Would love to have both of those features but if picking will stick with short message. I do have a bluetooth flasher so suppose I could go back and forward between firmwares when I wanted to use this. All of this is amazing work from some very talented devs though and we'll get what we get I suppose - betters cannot be choosers and indeed we owe them endless gratitude for turning this cheap radio into something incredible! :-D
@nicsure6 ай бұрын
It's a lot of work to merge the current egzumer to the dock's version of egzumer. Plus I'll be playing cat and mouse with them every time they update as I have noticed that they seem to be including things that would conflict with my code. It might just be coincidental but then again it may not. Messing with the firmware could cause catastrophic problems, especially when I'll be dancing around conflicting updates. It's a whole bunch of work I would rather not get caught up in.
@iaincampbell44226 ай бұрын
@nicsure thanks for your work and sorry to hear its been such a headache. Very much appreciated. Is there no scope that egzumer would merge this into their firmware by default and thus it'd be maintained whenever updates occur? From what you're saying about the fact they may be deliberately trying to make it harder I suspect not....anyway really appreciate your work. Frustratingly for me the message function on the current feature is pretty must have for my use case. :-/ perhaps if software on the PC could mimick that function and enable me to switch only one of my radios to this format and use the PC to pick up the received messages that might work. Anyway really appreciate your efforts. So amazing seeing what people can achieve where firmwares are modifiable!
@The070598 ай бұрын
is it only work with your custom firmware? i already have the egzumer firmware on my K6, will it work without flash your firmware?

My custom firmware is needed as it has the extra code required to send the display data to the PC.

Yes, there's not enough room for it. There's very limited flash storage.
@AndyMcGeever8 ай бұрын
Fair enough, i thought that was probably the case. Excellent app though, would this radio work with other SDR software then? @@nicsure
@nicsure8 ай бұрын
@@AndyMcGeeverPossibly but it would require some kind of interface to talk directly to the BK4819. It looks like egzumer is exploring that however as a recent commit on their original firmware now includes options to read and write BK4819 registers.

Is there a way to expose this as a CAT control device? With the ability to connect it for use with rig control software and other software this would be a great platform for APRS digipeater , All-star node , or even a personal cross repeater with a second radio... even better if the cat control interface could be accessed from Linux on a RaspberryPI ! Great job nicsure!

I bought this radio because I saw a video about the firmware hacks and I wanted to try. I knew virtually nothing about the amateur community. As this project has took off I've been thrown into a world of terminology and jargon that I have no clue about. Whatever you just said there I'm sure I'll understand in a few days, but for now bear with me.
@Wayde-VA3NCA8 ай бұрын
@@nicsureoh wow! That you put this together without already being a ham is impressive! You're in good company then since skuep ( the guy who made the AIOC ) was (is?) also not a ham when they started... I'd encourage you to grab some online study info for the country you're in and get yourself a license to fully open up the hobby to you! As for what I said above, CAT control is a (somewhat) standardized protocol for radio control. There's all sorts of software out there that can interface directly to radios via CAT control over RS232 (originally) , or more commonly these days COM device over USB. If the firmware exposed a COM device for radio control, and used the command format compatible with CAT control, the options would really open up!
@nicsure8 ай бұрын
@@Wayde-VA3NCANow you see, that's my ignorance again. If I'd known about this particular protocol to begin with I'd probably have just tried to make a CAT enabled firmware and then not had to bother with the front-end at all. I have got the UK "Foundation Licence" manual I picked up today so I'm having a read through that.
@Wayde-VA3NCA8 ай бұрын
@@nicsureIt's still a really nice front end , specific to the radio which is nice for regular use and programming, well done! With CAT control protocol in the firmware fork , you could make a front end that used CAT a bit like an API to abstract the radio control details out of the GUI, then your frontend may usable with other radios too, but also other software like APRS (a bit like Radio TXT messaging) / All-star ( a bit like Internet voice radio ) / Winlink ( a bit like Radio email ), and a bunch of other digital mode software will be able to control the radio too, lots of fun! Ham Radio is a "hobby of hobbies" , there are a tonne of niches , and with what you've accomplished here, I think you'd find a bunch of area's that you'd really enjoy.
