I returned to SC two days ago, last time I was in the verse was June last year. Yesterday, I went to Aaron in my Prosp looking for Q rocks the old way, first two runs were relatively short, got full Q on both. Today when started my 3rd trip, I had very hard time, didn't find a single Q rock worth cracking. So I asked myself 'What am I doing wrong? Has something changed' So off I went to the ol' Tube and came across your video. I'm so glad I did. While it's nice, it also invalidates every other mineable other than quant, because they just aren't worth the time to break and sort through the inert rocks. CIG needs to let us just "scrape" the surface of the asteroids to get at the basics like aluminum. Similar to the scraping that the salvage ship does.

Sadly salvage is just 'push a button' ATM. And it better not be more lucrative than quantanium mining! Brainless hull scraping and no threat of exploding in 15 minutes!

@@gbreuil1 I doubt it. Quant is worth 88 UEC/unit refined. Aluminum is worth 1.3/unit refined. They'd have to break the game to make the price swing anywhere near worth going for something else over Quant. And that's the extremes. The next best mineral to Quant is bexalite, and it is literally only half as profitable at 44/unit refined.

When they ‘enhanced’ scannning so you had to get within about 500m of a rock just to identify it, I stopped mining back in 3.17. Nerfing quantanium out in the belt also ruined one of my favourite peaceful pass times in the game, so I’m very much hoping that this change makes mining enjoyable again. I haven’t touched it really in about a year due to this. Thanks for the excellent guide on this change LoudGuns!

The scanning changes are so great. I love that we don’t need to use the mining laser to scan from a distance anymore or use the older default keys to change the angle of the scanning tool. Kinda bummed that the halo belt dud rock bug isn’t fixed still but I do like the amount of time you save without having to press all the buttons just to scan some rocks. I can’t wait for 3.18!

Pro Tip for avoiding headaches - quantum jump passed where you want to mine a bit, then turn around, clear your route, and set your new route to your refinery. Then micro-jump back into the band you want to mine. This will keep the star to your back for the most part. I can't be the only person that gets severe eye strain headaches when looking towards the star too long lol. Some great tips in this video that I never knew and Q-mining is about all I do in SC lol. like, I had no idea that the rule of thumb for 5k rocks was 1% = 1SCU. Great tip, thanks. :) There is one reason why I greatly prefer Prospector mining to a Mole though. In a Prospector, you can nudge forward or backward a bit for an extra degree of control over the charge level. That is just insanely helpful, especially if you can't yet afford or simply forgot to change modules lol. Also, if you have ballistic weapons for some reason, don't bother wasting ammo shooting the rock. Usually just turning scan mode off and then back on is enough. I still shoot them anyway to vent my frustration lol.

the new scanning method doesnt work for me. i dont get type-info no matter my range towards the rock. i can find rocks, but not identify them. only when i fly up to it, close, and use mining mode, it gives me the type and composition. thats a huge QOL-decrease for mining and i doubt thats only because of XT fkng the servers.

​@@RoxxSerm Scanning is bugged. That's why you need to get within 1000m of the rock and sometimes pop in and out of scanning mode. Mining is also bugged, sometimes if you stop the laser to stop over-charge, it doesn't want to start back up again and the power level will keep dropping. As you said, it's not a Xenothreat thing. But it IS one of many reasons the game is still aplha. They are trying to build out a whole galaxy basically, and that's going to have lots of bugs along the way.

Great changes. Always preferred the halo over Lyria, and with the Piratepatch comming up, Lyria is basically dead to me. Happy to see I'm finally able to use the mole in the halo.

Totally agree with you that planetside mining is going to be more dangerous then it already is. Solo ROC mining is also going to be a lot riskier.

@@samuraidriver4x4 ESPECIALLY in the early days of 3.18 going live. All these dress rehearsals in ambushing and intercepting mining/salvage and cargo ships... FINALLY its live and the kills count. Lyria, will be hotter than the Hurston star. Ive spent the last few weeks winding down 3.17 and acclimating to 3.18 so im fully ready for stealth mining in the halo

@@hawkzulu5671 going to switch my priority from rented roc mining to bounty hunting until I can afford a prospector and head into the halo. Transporting the refined materials is going to be the riskiest part and that might involve escorts/scouts. Alot of the newer opportunistic pirates are going to get bored of tractorbeaming crates around after a couple of weeks and then its probably going to become a bit safer. In the end I feel it's a good thing, it "forces" players to work together more on the lawful and lawless side. Sadly I haven't gotten the ptu to work properly yet.

@@samuraidriver4x4 That was the other half of my play in winding down 3.17 - getting as much flight time in hauler ships as i can so i can tweak the fit and the tactics to elude or escape interdictions and ambushes. Its been a fun ride. The newest patches of 3.18ptu from yesterday and today are performing Really well. - so now im rehearsing the zero- to hero so i can ^^ afford a prospector and the other ships i want to get into early once 3.18 goes live.

Did a bit of testing. I use a trackir to look around and the scanning hud follows that view. The actual scan centers on the crosshair, not the scanning hud though. You have to move the whole ship and not just look at the target to scan. Scanning the mineral content of an asteroid requires a bit more than 75% signal strength. It's probably 75.5%, but the hud doesn't show decimals for signal strength. Let's call it 76% and above signal strength to get the mineral content.

I LOVE the little micro-jump technique. That was my solution to beat the 'unscannable' asteroid bug in 3.17, i would land in my favorite thick band of asteroids and set course for my home staton. Then i begin scanning for the rocks in a 12km radius. If i run into nothing that looks favorable or too many unscannable rocks - i microjump 2 seconds toward home and that totally resets the asteroid field and a new shot at a jackpot cluster of quantanium in easy reach, with each microjump.

FYI on Lyria, 3400 isnt a guarantee of quant anymore. I always do a focused scan after to see the spacing of the signatures to tell. If they're decently close together, its probably quant, but if its decently spaced, say over 300m or so, it's likely the two signals of obsidian or granite merged at long distance.

This was one of the biggest changes in 3:18 apart from salvaging that got me extremely exited as I spend most of my time mining in the Halo, in 3.17 it wasn't really worth it for me to have a Mole but with these changes I might definitely melt down my Prospector and get the Mole instead. Rocks smaller that 1K is still very iffy, tried it again after last patch where 0% laser strength would take it into the red, it doesn't do that anymore but most rocks I tried yesterday only needed 2-3% to keep it in the green.

Thanks for the video. Very interesting and informative, as ever. I only recently took up Star Citizen, under the current live release, and I tried Quant mining in the halo in a Prospector, but found it to be so very hit & miss, with lots more miss than hit. Based on your video, this doesn't seem to be any different in 3.18, even with the different scanning method. Others have said that Quant mining in the halo is more lucrative than Hadanite mining, but I could never got anywhere near the amounts that some KZbinrs reckoned they got. Ages spent travelling around scanning the supposedly good areas in the middle of the halo for Q type rocks, finding very little if anything worth cracking, using short QT jumps between areas as you do to rinse and repeat. Noting down the distance to each asteroid so I don't keep scanning the same ones each time. Overall, so very frustrating, and requiring me to put aside quite a long time aside for it IRL each time. My experience is that Hadanite mining is actually a more reliable way of earning aUEC. On Daymar or Aberdeen. When starting out, hiring a Cutty Black and ROC, then buying a Nomad and ROC. Much smaller rewards from each ROC haul, granted (220K aUEC max each haul), but in my experience it added up to more than I ever managed to get in the same time trying to find & mine Quant. Instant rewards selling Hadanite on the moon you got it from, or at the local space station (less chance of being ganked), no time spent waiting for it to be refined, and no time spent transporting it in a hired ship (or expensive purchased transport ship) to a planet to sell. A bit more fun IMHO flying low over the planet than searching in the halo (although like most grinds, even that can get boring after a while). Once 3.18 goes live I expect I won't bother to work my way up to a Prospector, unless CIG significantly increase the probability of finding worthwhile Quant rocks in the halo. I intend to stick to Hadanite & to get better at PVE combat to work my way up to the better paying VHRT combat missions, to earn aUEC.

@@LoudGuns I'm still hoping they fix the Radar Ping angle. In 3.17 when you set it to 2% before going into Mining Mode, the Mining UI is much bigger and easier to monitor. I really liked that. You can't do that in the Mole, but it works great in the Prospector.

With my MOLE I made a ton of money in 3.16 mining the belt. The belt in 3.17 has been horrible for me. I've had to go to Lyria and deal with the MOLE desync bouncing. 😬 I will appreciate being able to go out to the belt again.

Yeah it’s great having a bit of variety with the mole and a more relaxed option. I don’t like making judgements on PTU but I noticed a decent reduction in the desync bounce when surface mining.

Those unscannable rocks are the bane of my existence. Could easily waste between 1/3 and 1/4 of your mining time in the belt on those, but now that you can scan from a greater distance that should greatly cut down on quant mining time.

i bought prospector on ptu and went to lyria, scanning progress so easy now but i finished extraction and came to arc l1 and boom, elevator not working. This game is crazy man i will wait 3.18 official and i think is there like 1 1.5 months. I tried 3 weeks ptu and i m done :)

Unfortunately, as of 3.18.2 we can no longer see the asteroid type by holding the left mouse button as it doesn't appear in the left OVERVIEW window. Not sure if it's just another bug as 3.18.2 is still buggy as hell in all aspects but as of right now it no longer works at 12k. It only works and appear on the left overview window when you're at about 3500 meters from the rock which sucks. Been mining with my Prospector for the last 5 hours on about 7 different servers and I got the same unfortunate result on all of them. That being said, thank you for your awesome videos. Cheers

Salvage is a neat idea and i can't wait until your salvage ship can eat entire hulls in one go but so far it's very boring no risk and reward for being a skillful at it you just draw where you wanna salvage and thats it, even moving the salvage cargo is more fun overall

While this is nice, it doesn't really change the inherent issue with the mole is that Quant is only stable for 15 minutes so even if you find a few nice sized rocks, you'll never really fill completely so its still more economical to use a Prospector. Unless they make a change to how long you have till Quant goes inert then Mole is still kind of meh compared to the Prospector.

In the 3.18.2 Version , scanning with 02° V-Scanner doesnt work by distance of 11 km 🤷‍♂️ 😤😤 Only the marked Rock appears without any Information about the type 😒😒 Any Idea what the Problem is ?
