Quantum Formula S (SAAB) at the VSCCA Mount Equinox Hillclimb 2017

Stefan Vapaa driving George Vapaa's 1963 Quantum Formula S SAAB at the 2017 VSCCA Mount Equinox Hillclimb. Engine is a SAAB two-stroke, mixer 850 cc bored out to 940 cc with a high compression head, GT crank, and Solex PII carburetor.

I had one of these that I sold in 92'. My wife bought it for me (as anniversary present) in 89' from a dude in West Seattle for $1K. It had a triple carb 850cc Monte Carlo engine (that was seized when I bought it but some Marvel Mystery Oil and my Enerpac hydraulic pump broke loose) and BMW/Isetta front suspension and 10" wheels (in front). It was cool looking but I had purchased a Lotus Formula Ford and lost interest in it so I sold it to a guy and he though I was being duped and selling him a Saab Formula Junior car on the cheap. It was a rear/mid engine car and not a Junior so the joke was on him, but it was worth as much or more than he paid for it. I had planned to build expansion chambers, raise the exhaust port height, and install Lectron Flat Slides but moved on to other projects.

Does anyone know of a Miami area "S" F-C with a DKW in it? I test drove the car at Ft. Lauderdale airport one night in 1973, after closing.. Last E.A. Electra had come in... Spun it on Taxi way switch backs, but did NOT hit the $400 purple light poles! Retired E. Airlines VP had several DKW powered cars, A Lotus 7 A Devin bodied Lotus 7 A DKW auto crosser... A Berkley with a Mercury outboard... IN BACK! Had a Mazda rotary in his MicroBus A Lola T-70 project with a P&W TURBINE! ( missing a few needed parts...) That was Pop... Helluva nice guy We at Florida Racing News, out of Miami.... WERE to buy the "S" with trailer, for $1000.... As our would be SCCA school car.... The '73 Oil Embargo killed us... Despite STP Advertising and other help... J.C. Tech Editor For as long as we lasted... ( Also tested at PBIR, with no drama...one day..)

I do not have such a car in my registry (formulasaab.com), so it is either still hiding from me, has been converted to a different spec, or is no longer in existence.

Harmonic vibration affecting the float bowl... I've had it on aotjer two stroker CHANGED to a Bing motorcycle carb... No float bowl... J.C.

Thank you for that suggestion! Since part of the goal of this car is to replicate the period correct formula, I can't change the carburetor. However, it does give me an idea of another place on the car I can look... I've long suspected the front pulley on the crank is out of balance. If I clean that up, maybe it will help.

Thanks for the ride. Maybe it’s running out of fuel now and then. Fuel pressure adequate? Float level? Sounds like a lean stumble. Maybe a rich lean indicator would confirm it. What a great car.

MMMMMM ...... A 2 stroke with brakes ....... >8^) Too bad the strokers are gone .... The are an experience that everyone needs in their life ...... I had a 1972 Suzuki T250J bike ..... Went like stink ..... With the fumes to prove it ...... :) BTW ...... I'm 67 and disabled through old age ..... But the spark is STILL in there ...... ROFL!
