Originally released as a single in 1976, the BBC banned it due to the drug and homosexual references. However, thanks to Kenny Everett, the song received a lot of airplay on his TV & radio shows, and was re-released in 1979.

Same here, me and my sister taped it off the radio and we learned to say Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu just cos we though it was funny. Ive always been able to remember the word but never the song, until today, I just found out from another random youtube video that its the name of a place in New Zealand (quite badly pronounced), and finding that allowed me to get the spelling and find this vid. That other video is titled "Maori reporter’s hilarious attempts at saying THAT long Welsh place name" where its mentioned along with Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch if you want to hear how Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu should be spoken.

I loved this song when I was a kid, mostly because of the opening line being a Maori place name in New Zealand (Im Maori) and it made me feel like we were famous around the world!! Correct spelling is: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu it means: The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his kōauau (flute) to his loved one". So yeah, a guy with big knees played a flute up a hill.

Rupert was a master producer. Listen to how he harnessed Saga and you’ll see his Day-Glo fingerprints all over the 1980s. That’s a beautiful legacy for a man who decided “I’m doing this my way from A the Z.” It’s sad that he passed away and I wish he could still work among us, but his contributions are listened to, stolen from and revered to this very day. As a young player my ears really pricked up when I heard the intricate lines weaving through this. Years later I watched Neil Sedaka in concert on TV and the guitarist really stood out, turns out it was the same fella, Mark Warner.

I loved this back in the day, and it`s still a great song, funny as hell even though some " modern " folk would have a poo fit if this was played in public. It`s great that Kenny Everett who was openly gay , did play it. He wasn`t offended, and got the joke, but too many people now go out of their way to be offended, just so many up tight and humourless permently angry ogres, just waiting to start a fight over often the most trivial things. The guitar playing in this is amazing, really technical and difficult, sounds like running water, it`s amazing. I play this song quite often, it makes me smile because it`s silly, thats all it was.
