Frenetic.. hectic, shaky, jarring, very fast paced. Combined with the more gritty realistic Bond, the immediate continuation of the drama from Royale.. and Bond having to get over his love, and simply man up and kick ass in that wake... provides a real setting for this action movie.

I always took Bond saying Vesper didn’t seem the sentimental type as him lashing out at her betrayal and it being a portrayal of how that broke him, not a contradictory plot hole.
@TheTCD4 жыл бұрын
Brad Alkire That works, which would also tie in nicely to him “letting go” of the necklace and of that pain when he finds that Kabira has been doing this to plenty of women in order to gain access to intelligence agencies for Quantum/Spectre, and that really, despite the betrayal she helped him find their trail. It makes me wonder if she had some knowledge of Oberhauser and his plan for Bond (this would obviously be a retcon, but it works), and sacrificed herself to eventually lead Bond to him as she knew he would be the only person who could stop him. Maybe not, I feel that Vesper wouldn’t have knowledge of the organisation past Gettler, Kabira and White, but it’s a compelling idea at least.
@TheTCD4 жыл бұрын
GiRayne Exactly. While no time frame is given for the time between Vesper dying and Bond being on the boat going through her belongings, it’s reasonable to assume it wasn’t that long. In that short space of time, he went from distraught to calling her a bitch. He was using that sudden change in visible emotion to mask his true feelings. He genuinely loved her, and her death and seeming betrayal hurt him. But he felt emotions compromised his ability as a 00 agent so he masked them with hatred.
@DylanMadd4 жыл бұрын
This is why it’s so strange that he gets involved so quickly with another woman in SPECTRE. After the Vesper experience, you’d think he actually wouldn’t trust another person, let alone a woman he’s intimate with.
@TheTCD4 жыл бұрын
BatMadd Well until No Time to Die comes out and states otherwise, he hasn’t technically been involved with another woman from SPECTRE. Swann is just Mr White’s daughter who just happens to know of his dealings with SPECTRE (although the trailer obviously hints at secrets she has kept from Bond, so it’s likely she’s involved). Bond used Sciarra’s wife to get a location for the SPECTRE meeting, so she doesn’t count technically. Up until the end of SPECTRE, he has just formed a bond (hurrr) with Swann due to circumstance, and maybe he wants to drop his guard again because he has found... a quantum of solace... in her.

TheTCD I’m likely extrapolating Her Majesty’s Secret Service. You could be right. Kinda lame But the story in this movie is just about how quantum was trying to basically own the water in bolivia. Huge money making opportunity for quantum. And to get that land they helped collapse the bolivian government for a corrupt man willing to give them this land in return for helping him gain power. I like the story a lot. Its very kinda centered around the whole climate change thing and green energy stuff. Louise X or it could’ve been even better. I mean, obviously it could’ve been so much worse, but it was the first Bond movie I was aware of coming out and I feel like I picked a bad time for that to be my first theatre experience in the series. I agree with most of the things in the Calvin Dyson review of it. One of the other things I didn’t like was how Bond comes up with C’s name. Like, I get it, it stands for cunt, and he was clearly eccentric enough to be a twist villain. But in his introduction scene, other than his acting, he’s just speaking normal dialogue. Like, there is no legitimate reason for Bond to insult him yet, it just feels like Bond is being the asshole. There aren’t many scenes like that in the films where what they were going for isn’t in sync with what makes sense.

[I didn't agree - of course] This is one of the worst Bond movies - but that doesn't mean it's terrible. It simply means that it has fallen below a certain high standard that we expect from - what is - the pinnacle of action cinema for nearly 60 years. Replace all of the character names and actors - and have the exact same script - and C minus is a particularly cruel rating for this action movie - which has TERRIFIC location work, an excellent female sidekick, and a terrific - but largely reserved - hero (actions more, words less). I'm telling Chris that he would give this a B+ if it was anything other than a James Bond movie.

I feel something worth mentioning that is at least one thing the movie does well is how it makes Olga Kurylenko's character the only (if not, the first) Bond girl who doesn't bang Bond. It respects the narrative's circumstances and kinda makes them both equals - they are both after the same organization that took someone close to them and are both out for revenge, and by the end of the film they simply part ways after helping each other reach their goals. I thought such a decision was kinda admirable, if there's one thing the film does that is interesting, it breaks the common formula and provides a Bond girl equal to Bond without coming up with an excuse for sex (and keeps Bond focused on the vengeance for Vesper). As generic and underwhelming the film is, it at least stands out for that. And yeah, the theme song is harsh. Totally agree that the instrumental is nice, but the vocals really clash. They'd have done well to not have Keys and White sing on top of one another. The Shirley Bassey song is rather nice, and a bit of a throwback to older themes. It's a shame that some themes end up getting cut out entirely (Radiohead had a lovely tune for Spectre), you kinda hope they would at least include the rejected theme as a credits theme like they did with k.d. Lang on Tomorrow Never Dies when Sheryl Crow won out (both are spectacular themes, amongst a few more that were pitched, one by Swan Lee that ended up being the credits music for the video game Hitman: Blood Money).

Quantum of Solace was best Bond movie for a long time. Obviously it was insulting to everyone who expected it to be "Bond" movie. Kurylenko here is not "Bonds girl". She saves herself and takes revenge by herself. Villains are portrayed as they are - dirty criminals. Bond is driven by dirty taxi cab, tiny Fiat type car and even by a bus with commoners. He was mistaken for a driver - what an insult. I think Craig David was pissed off by scrip so he didn't needed even to act in that scene. And while he drives plane, but what a plane - peace of garbage. More, biggest problem Bond solves - stops water price rise in dirty Latina country, leaves his friend's body in a trash and even hacks laptop of his superior. I was genuinely surprised by maturity of this movie. Of course, there are silly moments such as slim Kurylenko beating a giant general, but overall for me it definitely was "down to Earth" one of the best Bond movies.

When I was growing up and really getting into bond, Quantum was the latest entry and naturally became one I watched a lot. I liked it then and I still do now - your criticism about the action being derivative of Borne or Taken is incredibly insightful because my younger self, having never seen those films or been aware of that broader Hollywood trend, found the flashy, disconnectedness of the action to be quite envigorating. When I was 11 I couldn't quite piece together the reasons for one of the fights being intercut with some kind of opera, but that slant, that wistfulness, is what I think I love about this Bond. This film is very different from the others and absolutely suffers from a simpler proto-narrative. The dialogue, plot, characterization is wishy washy and vague, absolutely. I still like the way the movie feels, though, the ambiguity and sentimentality of it all. Its a dystopian Bond, one where the world thrashes upon him instead of him having the world. That ending scene - I can't get it out of my mind. It's so sorrowful and different to the "that's all for now folks" way the other films seem to end. I think this film is more worth a watch than Spectre, for example, which seems to pull every important character from thin air. Quantum pushes the foundational characters into that same oblivion.

I think it's dangerous to look at two films and conclude one film is good because the other is awful. That said, Quantum was the first movie I saw on my own in theater, so I've had it in my life for about as long as you have and I've aslo always enjoyed it: it has some great dialogue, the soundtrack is fantastic, and I appreciate that the "Bond girl" isn't just there for gratuitous sex. It's certainly not as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall but I do think it's a worthy continuation *of* Casino Royale, and it's a shame that narrative concluded with Spectre, because Spectre is one of the worst films I've ever seen. I personally really love the opera scene, from Bond breaking up the meeting with one of Craig's best lines as the character ("Can I offer an opinion? *I* really think you people should find a better place to meet.") to the chaotic shootout that follows (and yes, I do actually like the quick cuts here: it makes the scene frantic, messy, and brutal; this isn't John Wick where everything needs to be hyper stylized.

@illbebackeventually.97134 жыл бұрын
It isn't the exact definition but quantum can refer to a small or limited amount of something, in this case a limited amount of solace. I guess they were going for the idea that Bond is searching for that small ounce of solace that is available to him, tracking down Vesper's former lover who was indirectly involved in her death With a better script these ideas would have probably been better explored and I imagine that was really why Forster was hired, to explore a grieving Bond who will go so far for an act of revenge that is so meaningless. Of course, this doesn't come across in the final film at all and the whole thing feels like a confusing waste of time.

There's actual private water monopolisation schemes in countries like Columbia. Not to mention philantrophism used as a front. - Sheer unhinged anger from Bond. Complete loose cannon. - Jaded bond girl that, much like bond is dealing with her own shit so they find companionship in misery without tacked on romance. - Bond groupie gets completely screwed over - Actual hostility against MI6 - The opera scene is breath-taking. On this film James Bond met his worst enemy: Jason Bourne. It really feels like they lost faith in themselves after how good The Bourne Ultimatum was so they lost the bond essence and turned bond into a more ellegant Bourne. The big difference is on the Bourne films the hand held cam and quick cuts work! Here, not so much. HOWEVER the thing that pisses me off the most is how moralistic the film is, we spend the whole film watching a furios and more violent than ever Bourne, sorry Bond* wanting his revenge (literally the whole point of the film), and on the last second he realizes "revenge is bad". So, there you have it kids! Revenge is bad! HOWEVER I still think people overreacts about Quantum and SPECTRE. They are far from Casino Royale and Skyfall greatness, but they are ok films. I think the thing people really miss is that Greene isn't meant to be the villain in the film: it's Mr. White, who Bond has been after since the end of Casino Royale. Bond is just using him to get to White and unravel QUANTUM.

@@AJadedLizard, not according to the book Some Kind of Hero. The original script, titled Sleep of the Dead, featured two bad guys: Vesper's boyfriend Yusef Kibera, and some guy called Dante. Mr. White's role is still the same as in the film, though Mitchell's fate was originally his. The script would've been, IMO, played exactly like the first half of Casino Royale, with MI6, CIA, and the organization hunting Bond down. It is only when Forster and Haggis was involved that the film changed, with a subplot featuring Vesper's kid, and a climax set in the Swiss Alps. And then, the four elements type of action scenes is laid out. The rest is history.

TOMORROW NEVER DIES also had a rejected theme song. The k.d. lang song "Surrender" that plays over the end credits is a thousand times better than the titular Sheryl Crow song that plays over the opening credits. If "Surrender" had been the official song, it would have been one of the top Bond themes of all time!

Holy crap, that view count! This movie suffered heavily from the Writer's Strike. It feels rushed, quarter-hearted and ready to get itself done with. The movie is terribly edited and has no real pulse. Just a bunch of things happening, but no real energy. It's not good, but there's a few strong moments here and there.

I think the worst James Bond movies are with Roger Moore. Especially Octopusy and View to a kill. Quantum of Solace got some issues ,but better than Roger Moore last James Bond.

I'd make a case for The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only being better, as even though they have their cheesy aspects (not denying that at all), they were also the most effective of the Moore films, with focused plots, good characters and genuine excitement. I'd probably watch any of the other Craig films above any Moore film, but that doesn't mean Moore didn't have some gems.

I was actually suprised at your review of this film. I thought everybody loved this one. I've never heard anybody say anything bad about it. I loved the opening car chase scene! It was very intense and to me showed how dangerous of a world Bond lives in. Then the fight sequence with the guy with the knife was awesome too. To me it also showed that he is a Bond that will get down very gritty to emerge the victor in a fight. I guess though, that's probably what I like most about the movie, because the story, I can't even remember. So I guess I will agree with your synopsis on that aspect of the film. To me though, Spectre is the worst of the bunch.

The end scene, and the scene in the hotel between Craig and Dench is really great. In fact a lot of the emotional beats between Bond, M, Felix, and Mathis are pretty great in this film. The action and plotting are awful but it feels like Craig was invested in the character.

Honestly, I've enjoyed all of Craig's Bond films, even QoS & Spectre, probably in the minority on that but I really enjoyed this film when it came out. I remember many of my friends and family saw it in theaters & thought it was good. I remember getting on IMDB to talk about it and everyone was bashing it lol. I still like this movie & the dark tone. The film's not perfect but it's okay IMHO.

I saw this movie the week it came out and thought it was fine. Fast editing and action. The plot was hard to follow but you could pice it together. I watched it again on tnt,tbs or something, all that to say I actually enjoyed the movie more. I liked that the main actress is not a love interest and she is got a undercover job. It's not the best bond, but I'm starting to like more as it plays on TV. I have to disagree with Chris on this one because I had more fun on second and third viewing. So for me it's a solid 7/10. I do agree with Chris on keys. The more I listen to her, the more flat notes I notice in all her songs. Her live album is a great example of someone that just screams love songs.

In regards to the opening theme: The video game adaptation of "Quantum of Solace" actually has a much better theme song than the live-action film. I do like the Shirley Bassey version, but I prefer the video game opening theme.

There is one CULT CLASSIC that Chris should review, that has few reviews even though it's an unforgetable cheesy, awesome, fun film: *THE LAST DRAGON* It's a blaxploitation Kung-Fu action comedy romance from the 80s with a soundtrack by Motown. What's not to love?

5:35 it's probably more than a theory. That song was penned by Arnold, and the strongest outings are when he (co) writes the themes and works them into the score. If you go back and listen to TND, the score is littered with references to the song he wrote, which is heard in the end credits iirc, and appears on the soundtrack. And for whatever reason they shelved it for that Sheryl Crow... "song"
@Timelord0074 жыл бұрын
Spot on review Chris you summed it up the film perfectly, I've been fan of Bond all my life & this film is shocking, atrocious editing during the action scenes, piss poor villains & a wafer thin plot. They should have waited until writers strike ended & got a director who can direct action. This film tramples on or the great work Martin Campbell did with Casino Royale & it's a shame he didn't direct this film. And sticking the gunbarrel at the end of the film is bloody stupid, it a iconic sequence which goes at the beginning not the end of the film.
