The cultural significance of double outrigger sailing canoes is profound in many indigenous island cultures, particularly in the Pacific Islands. These canoes hold a special place in the traditions, ceremonies, and daily lives of these communities.
Michael Atkinson shows us how he built one of these canoes using a blend of traditional and modern techniques.
Visit Michael's channel Outback Mike to see how he survives while he travels.
If you like canoes and woodworking, keep watching to discover this amazing project.

In the Philippines, the ancient people coated their wooden boats with Balaw, a mixture of the sap of apitong (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus) and coconut milk. Balaw is also used to coat the entire boat to enhance its protection from the elements. Balaw is also used to stick wooden planks together and prevent leakage.

I was in a museum admiring native basketwork and noticed how they made baskets of different shapes and sizes and it occured to me I wonder why natives did not WEAVE thier canoes? They would have been very light weight & water tight. Birchbark canoes too are very light but it must have been a pain to water tight them. !
