My grandmother made this frequently. She was from Dothan and I don’t think ever lived anywhere except Donalsonville, GA, Henry Co., Ala., and Dothan. My mother stocked the “butter & nut” flavoring constantly and I’m sure she got it at A & P, Winn Dixie or Piggly Wiggly. We always did it with lots of pecans in the cake and frosting. Recently my elderly aunt from Atlanta who always thought we were dreadfully unsophisticated asked my sister what that cake was. She had remembered it 50 years later. So it is a great cake. I don’t know how a recipe this good has almost gone extinct, but it may be that the flavoring is just not at the regular grocery stores anymore. I remember when you had Gloria Gaynor on “Paula’s Party”. She said her mother was from Dothan and you said something like “well I know she could cook, then.” This video made me crave this cake. I think using Plugra butter would put this over the top.

"At home with Paula" "In the kitchen with Paula" "Hearts at home with Paula" Miss Paula you really are like a grandmother to me and you have been since I started watching your show in 2005. I read your autobiography as a young mother when I was struggling so much with health anxiety. Your story of overcoming agoraphobia inspired me so much and made me feel less alone. I'm nearly 40 now and my boys who were babies when I started watching you are big teenagers now. They've grown up with your laugh in the background, first of Food Network and now on KZbin!Thank you for bringing us into your home. Makes me feel so welcome and at peace.

My Aunt Maggie( my very favorite Aunt) had a Butter Pecan Cake that was out of this world. It was so rich you had to cut it paper thin. She took that recipe to heaven with her. Mom told us the story about how that cake came about. Aunt Maggie saw it in a news paper, but when she made it, it wasn't good so she played around with it and made it amazing. She never wrote the recipe down. She made it in a iron frying pan. But nothing else ever done touched those pans. I sure hope Jesus is enjoying her Butter Pecan Cake.
