Hello!! Enjoy this very chilled vlog of my evening in government quarantine in Seoul, South Korea. I'm here in isolation for 2 weeks before starting university! Learn Korean with me and chat about life. I have SO much to learn about Korea, but in this video I went down a rabbit hole of articles on modern-day issues, kpop (oh my gosh, BTS are everything!! I am obsessed!) and attempting to learn about somewhere I'm fortunate enough to live in for 4 months!

Tbh, I don't even care about Jade's decision to travel so much. If this was anyone else I wouldn't even bother saying anything. But Jade has put SO much emphasis over the years on striving to be a better human, being aware of her own actions, listening to criticisms, etc., that now it really seems like all of that was a bunch of BS. As soon as people DO criticise her at all, the only way she addresses it is by putting all the blame on her university and trying to gain sympathy from her viewers. She totally advocates travelling during a pandemic but then a few days later claims to do nothing of the sort. Tbh it's just the hypocrisy that bothers me more than anything else. She's often so preachy about being an amazing human being but then when actually put to the test she runs away with her tail between her legs. :/ I do, on the whole, enjoy Jade's content and hope to keep on watching her- I hope she just admits that she messed up by deflecting all the blame onto minerva, and that this was ultimately her choice. Apart from anything, if she doesn't do that then it's simply unfair on her fellow students and on Minerva itself. Spreading false information just to absolve yourself is not a good look.
@Ellie-su3rs

I feel like Seoul is going to be a repeat of Berlin. Jade is going to ignore the rules and common sense and will continue to go to cafes, travel around the country and risk spreading the virus to vulnerable people. I’m German myself and it made me so sad and frustrated to see how she ignored basic rules and common sense when she was in Berlin. Yes the rules were quite relaxed when she first arrived but that was only because Germany had very few cases during the summer. Once cases started rising most Germans went back into voluntary lockdown while both her and Eve continued to go out and travel to neighboring countries. Even when the official rules got stricter Jade continued to ignore them, e.g. going to Switzerland without quarantining. And trust me at the time she would have been required to quarantine for at least 5 days and get a negative test during that time. Just makes me sad to see how influencers continue to flounce the rules, apparently they’re above such things.

I’m doing a masters in area studies, focusing on japan but we look at east Asia as a whole too. I learned very quickly within the course how problematic it can be to study another country or culture. It’s easy when reading books or info that neatly package aspects of a country’s identity into bite size chunks, i.e. Koreans do this Koreans do that. I think it’s important to remember that defining people by nation is on itself very tricky. It makes the research more interesting too if you’re reading it with a more critical eye, which I’m sure you are! I just wanted to share this as a fellow student who’s also researching different cultures, the very notion of researching a new culture is worth research in itself.

To everyone saying she’s inspiring, hear me out: SHE’S NOT. She preaches positivity, but being positive is, in her own words, not about being happy all the time, but about keeping an optimistic attitude when the times are low. Take Eve Bennet, for instance. She went to Germany for her year abroad, but then caught COVID and had all her internships cancelled. Last time I checked, she was still recovering from some symptoms yet actively applying for more internships, and giving herself words of encouragement despite its being obvious that she was struggling. Now THAT is an inspiring example of staying afloat and trying to make the best of an unwanted situation. Jade, however, is not doing that. Instead of accepting reality and making the most out of it, she is disobeying the rules (and the law, as in Switzerland) to create a nicer reality for herself. Then, of course, she will be like “gaaaah the world is so heavy rn but I’m vibinnn, I feel soooo positive”. No shit. If I had put myself first and travelled irresponsibly I would also be “vibinnn” more than being bored at home until god knows when. Jade is not seeing the silver lining in the cloud. She is escaping the cloud, by creating nice experiences for herself at the expense of others: that is not inspiring, it is SELFISH. Especial mention to those of you who claim to be living vicariously through Jade whilst stuck in the British lockdown …like, seriously?! If we all did what Jade is doing we would see no end to this lockdown. Her snuggling with her boyfriend in Switzerland is indirectly contributing to our dreaded tier 4 lasting longer. Stop condoning her actions and being like “wohooo have fun Jade

YESS!! The phone thing is because when quarantine became mandatory upon arrival, a lot of people would just leave their phones behind while leaving their habitations, so they started to visit people's houses on top of tracking the phone's activity to determine if people are respecting the rules! It's a little annoying if you don't want to use your phone so much, but it's understandable why they did it!

One thing that really worked for me is once I know the basic reading I quickly when straight to my favorite Korean songs and that really improved my pronunciation and made my reading really smooth. Because they are my favorite songs I also learned different expressions and words so quick without the need of memorizing. Maybe it might work for other people I don’t know. Using songs to boost the learning speed really helps. Doing dramatic impressions of Korean drama is also a great way to way and really fun.

I was forced to travel and move countries during the pandemic, after my school closed down LAST February. I abided by every travel restriction just like Jade did and so did absolutely nothing wrong. I think you fail to fully understand what it means to travel during the pandemic, many other people I know were also forced to move countries during this time. And you being stuck at home in lockdown does not absolve other people from travelling under correct guidelines. Stop guilt-tripping and using your actually very privileged position to tell others what their doing right or wrong.
@stephaniew.8746
@stephaniew.8746 3 жыл бұрын
@@sophieelizabeth3976 oh yes, I am so incredibly privileged ... I cannot participate in school properly because my suicidal thoughts have been getting worse since we have lockdowns. My therapist already suggested to me going to the hospital. And why? BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO DONT HAVE TO STILL TRAVEL!!! Jade was not forced to go to this stupid university, and besides: there are other people from Minerva who CHOSE to stay home. But, of course, because Jane is so SpEcIaL, she had to go to SK. I wish here nothing less than that SK goes into hard lockdown and she cannot go anywhere. Maybe she then realises how other people feel.

yess jade the music , the fun (they're soo funny) nice to see you're giving them a listen. since you're interested in the culture and social issues bts have many songs adressing different issues i would recommend reading the translations to these songs then there are youtube videos "explained by a korean " that just explain them soo well(can't stress this enough you just understand them way more cause they're explained by a korean) . some of the songs are: spine breaker (about how teens fall into trends and break their parents backs with the cost just to fit in) , baepsae / silver spoon (it's a call out towards the older generations that were born with a "silver spoon " in their mouth and that tell younger generations who struggle with very expensive living costs such as buying houses to just "put in more effort", it's basically in short "ok boomer") , N.O (addresses the educational system that drives many to suicide (there's a really good drama that adresses this issue it's called "sky castle" ( "sky " is the top three universities in seoul you get into with the CSAT which is a really important exam and there's a lot of pressure that comes with it ) and many many other songs about mental health (especially suga's own songs where he himself talks about struggle with anxiety / depression) ps : i think you would really "vibe" with R.M in particular he's honestly a genius all the lyrics he writes i dont know where to start i really enjoy reading the books he recommends i cant even put it into words let's just say he has a philosophical view on life .
